BTW- dontcha just love cops who pull you over & swear they smell alcohol & suspect drugs even tho none of it is true? :p

Heh- I should've farted before he stuck his head in the window. :D

'Course, he'd prolly think we had a dead body in the car then. :D

Still... the silly-ness of 5 cop cars for 1 vehicle with 2 passengers makes me wonder: How many crimes were committed while they were trying to find something?

Can't say, it's never happened to me.

I'm sorry this happened to you......

ummmm.......... :eek:

care to elaborate?

2 AM, taking my fiancee's friend home, which is in a town I've been to twice- both times at day. Toss in some road construction to further confuse me.

I figure it was a warm, Friday night, the cops were bored, and the area has a reputation as being "ghetto".

Only with my luck! :rolleyes:

OK - so tonight at 6 PM SLT is my grand opening at Club Shiraz - There will be a best in Glam and Wings type contest- but the biggest draw there is the silliness in open chat.

Hope my Threadies can come to for a gander at the Talon Faire store though of course I have already subjected you all to my never ending fashion quest. :)

Now me goes to attack RL for real. Eek- vacuuming is calling yuck!

Did everyone have fun with the rolling restart last night? Went to 4 different sims last night and each one was just about to restart. :p

I think it was a conspiracy. :D

Twenty teams of nine cyclists each started the Tour. Nine riders have abandoned due to injuries and fatigue. And last night Spanish cyclist Manuel Beltran of Team Liquigas was arrested, ejected from the Tour, and fired from his team when his test results from several days ago came back positive for the blood booster EPO. It's hard to see how he thought he could get away with it in the current anti-doping climate.

Stage 8 of le Tour de France was 172.5km about 104 miles with hard rain the whole way. There were two cat.4 and two cat.3 climbs but the course was flat enough that the sprint specialists could hope to not get left behind and to get a chance to fight it out at the finish.

There were a number of attacks and counter-attacks at the beginning of the day which eventually shook down to a four man break away 5minutes and 30seconds ahead of the peloton (main field).

Yellow Jersey holder Kim Kirchen's Team Columbia were at the front of the field controlling the race all day. They had two objectives. 1. To keep Kirchen safe from crashes. (The farther back in the pack a man rides the more danger of getting tangled up with other riders.) 2. To give their sprinter, Mark Cavendish of the UK a chance to go for the race win.

They picked up the pace to bring back the breakaway group and to make it impossible for anyone else to attack. (Attack means trying to ride away from the group.) Riders from other teams with sprinters helped with the pacemaking. Kirchen, Cavendish, and the "protected riders" of the other teams spent the day conserving energy by riding in the slipstreams of their team mates.

At 35km from the finish the breakaway group were only 45 sec. ahead and must have known they were doomed. At that time the pace makers slowed down the peleton because if they catch a breakaway too soon new riders will attack and need chasing down. The final catch was at 3.5km to go.

The approach to the line featured a sharp bend, on narrow streets, in the pouring rain but everyone made it safely through. It was a great sprint finish won by Cavendish. His lead out man, German Gerald Ciolek, crossed the line second.

Kirchen retains his Yellow Jersey but relinquished the Green to Spaniard Oscar Freire of team Rabobank.

Well- I first encountered it years ago in the Handmaids Tale when the "heroine" finds it craved into a tiny corner of a wardrobe by some previous desperate soul - Wikipedia has this to say:

"Variants and etymology

There are many variants of the phrase, such as

* Nil illegitimi carborundum.
* Non illegitimis carborundum.
* Illegitimi nil carborundum.
* Non illegitimi carborundum.
* Nil bastardo carborundum.
* Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.
* Illegitimis non carborundum.
* Illegitimus non carborundum est.
* Nil illegitimo in desperandum carborundum

None of the above is correct Latin. Carborundum is not a Latin word but the name of a mineral which is extremely hard and used for grinding. (see silicon carbide article). The ending -undum suggests either a Latin gerund or gerundive form—and the idea of obligation ("Don't let ...";) is more suggestive of the gerundive—but the word is actually a portmanteau of "carbon" (from Latin), and "corundum" (from Tamil kurundam).

Illegitimi suggests illegitimate to the English speaker, or bastardo likewise, but the Latin for bastard is actually nothus (from the Greek word notho meaning not-pure (used when referring to a bastard whose father is known) or spurius (for a bastard whose father is unknown). In addition, the gerund/gerundive ("carborundum (est)";) would probably require a dative ("illegitimis," "to the bastards";), or even a double dative ("illegitimis tibi," "to the bastards, by you";), were there such words to begin with. "Nil" or "nihil" is regular Latin for "not at all" or "nothing." The forms with nil may be formed partly on the pattern of the genuine Latin phrase Nil desperandum.

The phrase originated during World War II. Lexicographer Eric Partridge attributes it to British army intelligence very early in the war (using the plural dative, or perhaps they meant ablative--it's the same form: illegitimis). The phrase was adopted by US Army general "Vinegar" Joe Stillwell as his motto during the war.[1] It was later further popularized in the US by 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.[2] The United States submarine USS Tunny (SSN-682) uses it as the ship motto. The weekly Alaskan newspaper 'The Nome Nugget' uses it as a motto, as does the Whitehorse Daily Star, in the capital of the Yukon Territory.

Henry Beard in his 1991 book Latin for Even More Occasions (chapter I) offered some correct Latin for the sentiment, but did so in a section "Dopey Exhortations Are More Forceful in Latin", which might be his comment on the merit of the expression.

Don't let the bastards wear you down.
Noli nothis permittere te terere."

I'm sorry, but I do believe think this group requires empirical data, you know, evidence, exhibit A, etc. :p

Edit: Redgrave has good stuff! And Muse has some nice watches...

ok - empirical data provided herein, and those are Rooke's glasses. They look great!

and while I'm at it, here's a shot of an asian pear I took around Easter time:

It might be a good Ad campaign, similar to Joe Namath's Pantyhose ads.."If I can look good in this dress, imagine what it will do for you.'
