OK, wife and I beta tested TSO. Then when it went live we payed the 50bucks each to get the "founder edition" software. We played for awhile after and then someone there mentioned SL. It was excepting beta testers. We signed up on the site and got in. We wandered around and thought the avatars were butt ugly (this was before skins and prim hair, etc it was March 03). We goofed off with the gestures, flew around and got bored quick. So back to TSO we went. VERY soon after that we were asked by friends to try There.com out. We did and after being accepted to beta test it we found we liked it. Much easier to get around in then SL was.

I still messed around with SL while playing There and TSO. People were friendly but I was pretty shy and stood back and found myself just kinda flying around looking at stuff.

So There.com was going live. They offered a lifetime membership. At around the same time SL sent an email for a lifetime membership that included a big chunk of land with free tier for life. SL wanted something like 200 bucks (can't remember exactly how much) and There.com wanted around 30ish. We went with the There.com package. If only I knew then what I know now.

More to the story, but that is the jist of it.
As I read this I was thinking, "I was a TSO beta tester! If someone had only mentioned SL to me then I would have come! I could have had that deal!!" But then I realized I probably wouldn't have taken it either. I quit TSO when they wanted me to start paying. Dang, if only we'd known.

I honestly didn't think SL would last. As clunky as it was and as ugly as the avatars were (people all over complained about that lol) I figured it would fail and There would beat it. Silly me..

What city did you beta test in? I was in Jolly Pines. I had a toon named The Edge and a club called "The Point Depot".

LOL. Yeah, I see him trying to push buttons on people. I laughed him off the time or two before when he said something to me. I just didn't understand where that last one was coming from. It was random.

What does he do for a job that makes him good at this? Please tell me he is not a psychiatrist or something. rofl

He's a Corrections officer in New York City.

My SL story is simple. It was a snowy weekend and I was bored. Bored enough to turn on the computer at home, something I rarely did. I never played any computer games, went in any chat rooms or anything of the kind. I was reading some article, I don't even remember what, and it mentioned Second Life briefly. So I looked it up and figured since I was stuck indoors for the weekend I gave it a try.

I was mostly in Blazing Falls (?) I think that's the name. I was somewhere else too. My rl friend and I had some way of giving each other money in different cities I remember.

Btw I want to keep playing the game. What are we looking for now? Still an adjective?

I actually first heard about it from my daughter. She was playing it once when she was visiting. She showed my wife a few things about it and I tried to talk her into joining so she could follow the kid around and try to annoy her. My wife still hasn't joined, and my daughter said she hasn't been online in months.

It turns out my son had been grooming me for SL since before it even existed. First he and my husband brought home The Sims for me. I didn't even think I'd like it but 14 hours after I started playing someone came in and said, "didn't you ever go to bed?" In the end I had a website with 1000's of of files of custom content for The Sims and Sims 2. Then son suggested sl. He came in world too and found a developer and got me hired to make signs, ads, a few small builds now and then.

I took home the first Sims from work when it came in. My wife got hooked. She had a website too and even had a featured tutorial on the official site (her name is simsherry). She has bought every expansion, etc since then except the newest. I think she is finally walking away from The Sims. She hasn't even checked her sim mail in awhile. :D

The monetary investment in something makes it very hard to walk away from, especially if the visual evidence is constantly there. I am referring to the Sims game, then all the addon packs that people started to get to make the experience more fun and try new stuff. In many ways SL is probably easier to walk away from, there is no cardboard packing, no cds/dvds and their cases, no user guides, etc. The ultimate in green VW membership lol.

Can't recall who asked how we got involved in SL, but here goes.

OK. I was visiting a friend for the weekend. We were driving along, talking about two book series I was reading (about a vampire hunter and the sidhe). Out of the blue (or so it seemed), she asked..."have you heard of Second Life?" I almost fainted. I thought she'd joined a religious cult. And she, a pagan baby. I said..."um, no?", as I was quickly trying to sort out how I was going to spend the rest of my weekend with a new religious fanatic...

She then gave me a good description of SL, at which point I almost wet my pants laughing in relief...and when I told her why, she almost drove off the road, she was laughing so hard. She had brought up SL because of the RP opportunities, which she thought might interest me.

So, we went back to her house, and she proceeded to log in and show me her avatar. And when I got back home, I learned that my brother had been in SL for YEARS, so he showed me the ropes (and other assorted items in his inventory :D).

Ewwwww Maureen saw her brother's xcite stuff.

And Maureen, if you don't think SL is a cult I would like to offer you this flower at an airport.

Gabriele.. off subject but I saw a HORRIBLE vamp movie last night. The Thirst. It had Glory from Buffy in it but it was just really.. cheesy and poorly done. :D

Oh I loved 30 days of night. That one was actually kind of freaky.

I so wanted to like The Thirst. Andrew and Glory were in it. Buffy connections should make for good vamp flicks. :(

I use to read the court tv message boards a lot and there was a thread there of some random woman complaining that her "friends" husband had this"second" life . So while pretending to care,I got more info out of her cause it sounded cool.:p

Oooo, the Nomine Neko skins are on sale for 200L each because she's coming out with a new Windlight-oriented set soon. They're my faves!

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Just keep telling yourself that she only creates or skydives. Nothing else.

Three pages and 40 posts each... gone past in on little night. Sometimes I should just stay right here.

I'm not sure how I would react to that. I'm fairly open minded - I know my daughter as sex with her boyfriend and I'm the one that sent her to my doctor for the pill, but still think I might flip if I actually witnessed her doing anything.

I started SL after seeing a mention of it in some article. I've played lots of the Myst type games but never anything online. I was simply intrigued by the whole virtual world aspect. My son thinks his mom is kind of cool now for getting into something sort of like an MMORG - he does WOW. My husband and daughter have no interest. Just a couple of months ago, I introduced my mom to SL and she enjoys it a lot - though her husband also just does not get it.
