Better take the car. Funny story there. Involves me pushing a 550 pound motorcycle about a mile last night. That's a long way. It also involves a local Chevron station being forcibly shut down after they "allegedly" topped off their gas tanks with water so as to increase their profits.

Want to hear the crazy part? As I'm sitting in the parking lot of a different gas station being told by the tow truck driver that he can't tow my bike becausehe has the wrong truck and he can't get the right one, so I'm screwed, this guy rides up on a sport bike. After asking what the problem is, he volunteers that his brother is one of the main mechanics at the local Yamaha dealership - where I bought the bike brand frickin' new last Saturday (it's only got 120 miles on it!). He gets his brother on the phone and when they can't figure it out over the phone, his brother packs his family up and heads over to see what he can do. This is at 10:00 at night, btw.

He fiddled with it for a while and once we figured out that it was a tank full of water with a shiny bit of gas at the top, he went to work. The ratio of water to gas was around 6:1 I'd guess. He ripped apart the entire fuel system, drained everything out, cleaned it up, put it back together and re-tuned the engine right there in the middle of the night in the cold dirty parking lot. I drove out of there with a fresh tank of actual gasoline and the bike running perfectly sometime around midnight.

THAT is customer service. He totally put his night on hold and ran out to help a total stranger because it was his boss that had sold me the bike and he wanted me to be a happy customer.

At any rate, the bike is running fine again. I'm having it fully checked out, but I can't see any sign that there was ever anything wrong. The local Yamaha dealership has a customer for life.

Wow... that is so cool. But, but.. water in the gasoline? at $4.50 / gal?

/me has a mental image of Trout pushing the bike, huffing and puffing, black smoke pouring out of his ears..

As I sit beneath the onyx darkness of a severe thunderstorm, listening to the sound of rain battering the roof like gravel, it occurs to me that there's less-than-malicious ways a lot of water could get into an underground gas tank.

It's a really obnoxious link that will lock up your browser playing Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' video.

In case you aren't familiar with the song:

:) Glad you are liking them.

Trout.. wow. That is very amazing customer service. Don't forget to call the owner and tell him about that mech. wow.

And where did you get gas that watered down? Old can around the side of the house? :D

Called him this morning and I'll follow up with a letter. If he were my employee, he'd be enjoying a really nice bonus.

The gas came from a Chevron station. The national company is apparently writing a lot of checks this month to make up for it and they have shut down the local station. It's a franchise sort of thing, so it wasn't Chevron overall, just the local station. I think they are trying to argue that the tank "accidentally" got a bunch of water in it, but I'm not buying it. There's always going to be some. Ethanol absorbs water and those tanks get condensation, but my gas was around 6:1, and the local newspaper reported another measurement of 4:1. That's water to gas! I got 120 miles out of 6:1 water to gas! Pretty impressive. I think I'll stick to normal gas from now on, though.

Well, it also makes the browser window travel manically around your screen, which may be the 'rolling' part.

Some people have too much time on their hands.

I swear, you just can't make this stuff up, Trout. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Thank goodness the story had a happy ending. That dealership not only has earned a lifelong customer, but has gained one who will sing the praises of the dealer to anyone who will listen.

Welcome to the weekend! :)

Rickrolling, afiak, USED to be just linking to the video and that's it. It could be funny sometimes!

The mean scripting and locking browser is something new. And uncool.

Rain shouldn't do it. This is the Pacific Northwest. It's monsoon season year-round here. Gas stations are required to have sealed tanks, and if they did leak, this would be a pretty common occurence. I've seen a few stations get in trouble over this sort of thing, but it's not common at all.

Condensation develops in the tanks and ethanol picks up moisture from the air, but the gas station underground tanks compensate for that by picking up fuel from the side of the tank instead of the bottom. Gas is an oil, so it does not mix well with water, and it floats - like when you have an oil and vinegar salad dressing. There's a clear line between the oil based liquid and the water based liquid.

There is no way that I can see that they could have had water in that tank in that concentration without something really weird going on. Even at the conservative estimate in the newspaper of 4:1, your 20 gallon tank in your car would have 16 gallons of water in it and only 4 gallons of gas. That's a LOT of water, not just condensation.

Theres still some gas stations that haven't gotten around to modernizing their tanks here in Ohio.

We have a gas station thats shut down down the road due to that very thing. The owner simply couldn't afford it so they just abandoned the station.

Salad is good for you! It's not like I said cheesburger or pizza. Or delicious little fried buffalo wings, or french fries or ice cream or chocolate chip cookies. Onion rings. Donuts. Pie!

There. Did I take your mind off of the salad?
