The first year was an absolute marvel of discovery for him and he just immersed himself. Fortunately, they are very polite to westerners. Eventually he got promoted, was begged to stay on when other westerners couldn't make it, started to like the food, started to learn Chinese, got himself a girlfriend and doesn't appear to want to come home any time soon.

I think the trick is NOT to try to make it a home away from home but to adapt and learn the local culture as quickly as possible. What an adventure!
Yes, learning to live like the locals do is certainly cheaper and easier. It will be my second time living abroad; however, Japan was easier because I had studied the language. I find the idea of learning Mandarin quite daunting.

this is a very astute and valuable observation, Brann.

.oO(and one i will also take into consideration in my very near future)
Where are you going???

From: LittleMe Jewell
Wow - so very very cool. Hopefully, you'll be able to check in with us. I hear that China is pretty tight on the internet access.
I'm told by the other foreign teachers at the school that there are ways to access the outside world. One of my SL friends is a Beijing native, so I know SL isn't totally blocked.

From: 3Ring Binder
i am green with envy. it's going to be terrific, cuz you are. :)
Awwww gee, shucks... :o

Ok creative ppl who make eyelashes. The next big thing in eyelashes is White! Like this:

Got that?
I have a bug making my lashes white on one skin and I'd like to keep wearing it. So for now, my lashes are very white and I want to share the love lol.

Congrats thread! Congrats Brann! I really wanted 100,001 but it was not meant for me. That crazy RL stuff always gets in the way :D

Thank you Claire, Maureen, Brenda and Malia for offering to pose for me. My time is SL is very sporadic but I am sure we can find a time to do a photo session (Fridays and some Saturdays belong to my partner but we can work around it.) I will take the photos with the same resolution so they can be merged at a later date iffin we wanna do that (I haz mad masking skills in photoshop.) Otherwise, I would love to photograph you each individually in whatever pose/situation/setting you would like.

Oh and the photos today! Wow! Can't comment on them all but I really love 3Ring's sweet pic... and Ann Otoole! Wow...

Brenda, as a long time Cubs fan I can only say... there is always next year.

Hugs thread! Peace and love and all that good stuffs! Lula

I could not join the show and tell earlier due to my picture collection being at home rather than work, but here is what I have been working on recently:

These are available for free from here: Blair (169, 85, 135)

Please feel free to come and get any that interest you.

Also I have been working on this:

I don't have this out anymore but if anyone would like a free copy that rezzes from a rezzer, please drop me an IM - it needs about 4096sqm of land to fit (approx).

i have learned a lot though, via this thread. it's been fun! we need to post a place at the cartel where we will all know where each other has wandered off to.

off to bed for me. big week ahead! looking forward to next Friday night (already) so i can relax. :)

ok, one more thing. i am super bummed.

today i picked up a new moniter, which is wide screen. so, as Eli and i wandered the grid tonight, i took a TON of pics. well darn it if the top half of every pic isn't cut off... so in almost every pic we have no heads. :(

so, what do i need to do to balance that out for next time? anyone?

Oooooh, and a rare Bith sighting too! Hi Bith!

Thank you, Kaimi. I'm still in the shock/OMG phase as it's happened very swiftly. Excitement will come later, when I've got this massive to-do list under control.

/me waves

Are you a TESOL person? Very close to my former field. :-) Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic field experience!

And it's nice to visit the thread again. I'm sorry I've been too otherwise occupied to contribute much lately. It is nice to see so many still here though. :)

The clocks range from about 12 to 30 prims depending on which one :)

And thanks for the nice words about the hockey rink :)

LL has no intention of fixing this glaring defect that has been fixed more than once but because they are all garage hackers that learn from reading books at barnes & noble the old defective code keeps overwriting the fixes.

You have to use the snapshot tool and set the resolution to like 3200 wide by 2300 high. then take the snaps to disk only using the snapshot tool.

Snap to disk will never be fixed by the sort of people LL hires. they don't have the skills to fix basic OpenGL things. If they had basic software engineering discipline skills this would have stayed fixed from back in 2008 when they fixed it before.

@Ann, 3Ring,

I did the sensible thing and stayed with viewer version 1.22.11 - snapshots (and many other things) just work right.

That sucks :( You would think that photos would be a high priority given that so much of SL is based on sharing experiences that way. Perhaps a third-party viewer has it fixed?
