OK, I got it that the report of unlimited layers in Emerald was premature, along with various other things...and I have the newest version that corrects some of that. But I still don't have the capacity to edit layers in Appearance at all and my pant legs are hanging out of my brand new riding boots. How come I can't shorten them in Emerald?

you need to turn off emeral clothing layers in the preference, this will restore the normal SL clothing layers.

Turning off the clothing layer protection thingy didn't work for me. I even changed it in the xml file so that the stupid thing would stay off and it still won't let me alter the layers.

Aha! This might explain why a friend was having problems with gloves yesterday.. So to edit the glove-layer, she needs to go into preferences and turn OFF enable Emerald Clothing layers?

The Clothing Layer Protection is not the same thing as Enable Clothing Layers. It's a shield so no one can look and see who made the clothes you're wearing. Turning it off did not give me the ability to edit layers.
And although I know I enabled Clothing Layer in one of the earlier Emeralds, I can't find it now in 1.23.5.950.... 0.o (cue Twilight Zone music) _____________________

Figured out what was wrong for me. For some reason, there is yet another settings file in the Snowglobe's folder that is specifically for Emerald. Uninstalled, deleted it, as well as anything else related to Emerald. Then when I reinstalled, I was able to edit the layers after shutting off the clothing layer protection thingy.

I am still using 1.23.5.904 -- in that version, the clothing layers option is on the Emerald tab of Preferences / Avatar tab, right side of the upper part and is labeled "Emerald Clothing Mode".

People cannot inspect you to see where your clothes came from. Last i knew, "Clothing Layer Protection" just baked all your clothing and skin layers together so that someone can't come along and GL Intercept your outfit, specifically your skin, since it would be baked with the clothes you are wearing instead of separate as per the normal behavior with the regular viewer. Never have we been able to see the creator of a persons clothing layer. _____________________

If you are on 1.23.5.950, the option has been removed because it really does not work yet anyway. _____________________

*giggling @ Clothing Protection* can't figure out for the life of me why anyone would want to hide who made their clothes...unless its ripped, of course. _____________________

no gl intercept will still grab anything even if protected is turned on.
but it does stop nosy folk from seeing who made what. you can always export then reimport and see if that works _____________________

no gl intercept will still grab anything even if protected is turned on. but it does stop nosy folk from seeing who made what. O.K. Obviously there are more aspects of SL that i am ignorant about that than even i knew, so lets clarify this since 2 people have stated it is impossible now: 1- Since when can you find out through your viewer who the maker of clothing layers are on another avatar. 2- "Enhanced clothing layer protection" as far as i knew worked to protect skins and clothing layers by baking all the layers together so when broadcast in SL to other viewers it is as one layer of clothing+skin together, not separate layers for clothing and skin. I believe this was a Copy Bot protection since GL Intercept works differently intercepting files from the video cards OpenGL stuff as opposed to SL which bakes the layers. Has #2 changed? LittleMe agrees with my current understanding. I am still confuzzled with this idea that we can tell what clothing layers are made by whom on other people through some process of the viewer other than just recognizing the manufacturer (we are not talking about prims but clothing layers). _____________________

This is what the Emerald site says about the feature:
Clothing layer protection Some clients, such as Vlife, Cryolife, etc some with the ability to right click and copy individual textures such as your skin, shirt, clothes... this function prevents that. Does not work against copybots "clone" feature, but does prevent them from saving texctures to hard drive.. _____________________

can't figure out for the life of me why anyone would want to hide who made their clothes...unless its ripped, of course. i never turned mine on i think it comes as a default and it's an option to turn it off..i'm still trying to understand the two buttons just to the right of it before i do that.. cause from the way it sounds you could end up turning other options off as well.. i don't care who see's what i am wearing..i just don't want to turn other things off and have to dig around to see what they are that changed hehehehe _____________________
