From: Rocketman Raymaker Are they any avatars that are so well known in SL they could be considered Sl celebrities? WHo are they and why?
the 2 people I've heard the most about are Anshe CHung and Aimee Weber I guess i would be. I'm a SL veteran. Give me my Social Security! *shakes cane* But yea i guess i would be in a way... I have added content to the grid that people do use, plus my name has got around. Was kinda shocking today i was playing EQ2. I mentioned SL and someone asked me who i played as. When i told them, they automatically recognized my name. XD of course too much popularity can do more harm then good IMO. I do enjoy a little bit of it though hehe. If your talking about celebrities as in people who have ended up in headlines on websites for what they do in SL, that time hasn't come yet for me.

From: Sterling Whitcroft Actually, I see several people in this very thread that I'd nominate...
Absolutely!!! Which is, I guess, to be expected From: Sterling Whitcroft I'm really impressed with Jopsy Pendragon. Class act. Agreed. Jopsy has been very friendly, generous, and helpful both "in person" and with the creation of the Particle Lab for us all to use. Same with Lumiere Noir, who has also been quite friendly and helpful, and the Ivory Tower is just a staple and mandatory stop for all would-be builders. Also, someone mentioned how communities have their own stars. Some of those celebs are well known outside of their community, others virtually unknown. I personally think that Lex Neva should be on such a list. And several members of Tyrell Corporation And, of course, in the community in which I am most active there are Archanox Underthorn, Esprite Xavier, and Ayame Musashi. Wow.... When you get to thinking about it, there are several brilliant, helpful, well respected, and fairly well-known people in SL aren't there? Suddenly, I feel like everything is going to be O.K.

The famous Marilyn Murphy (Club Vogue, Players Magazine)
And the infamous BigJohn Jade (and the equally infamous Club Elite)

From: Mitsou Fraisse I nominate Natalia Zelmanov, with her entertaining and informative travel-and-building blog (thank you!) . . . You forgot to mention that she's also Miss Second Life Really, Natalia's blog is very helpful and amusing (especially since the arrival of Talia), and though I've only met her in world once, she seems like a very nice, genuine person. If you haven't checked out her blog before, give it a look: http://slnatalia.blogspot.com/It's funny that this topic came up, because I felt like I had met a celebrity in world a few nights ago when I saw Sidney Smalls in a shop. I frequently check out the SL Photo Pool on Flickr, and I became a fan of her pics (many cool SL photographers on that site). I really felt like I was bothering a celebrity when I approached her and told her what a fan I was of her pics. Celebrity in SL is definitely based upon which community you participate in, as has been stated. Most of the people mentioned in this thread are unknown to me.

"The Bush Guy"
Other than that I don't know. I don't believe in, or follow "celebrity", though there are a few names that show up around the internets.

Even as a relative noob, I recognize and agree with just about all the names mentioned above. Rather than answer the question "[who is] so well known in SL they could be considered Sl celebrities?", I'd rather answer the question "Who deserves recognition, even if they may not be celebrities?"People that I greatly admire and respect, even if I've never spoken with or met them, simply from what they have written and created. As a geeky scripter, most of these fall under the umbrella of: From: someone Also, each special-interest community within SL has its celebrities who are not so well-known outside of that community, but nevertheless, are names to be conjured with. - Desmond Shang, benevolent despot of Caledon, creator of the flagship private community of SL
- Ordinal Malaprop, Caledon native and visionary of what is possible via LSL
- Seifert Surface , mathematician and artist, designer of a SL representation of a 4-D hyperspace home, and contributor of incredibly helpful prim shaping tools
- Strife Onizuka , scripted prim torturer and artist, contributor of LSL functions galore
- Argent Stonecutter, another scripting guru
- Jeffrey Gomez, not only a generous and talented scriptor but also a responsible creator; who believed that the way to deal with scripting-mediated exploits is NOT to hide them, but to meet them head-on and fix them, for which he was attacked
- Newgate Ludd, who must live in the Scripting Tips forums, providing huge amounts of help
- Natalia Zelmanov, whose prolific blog describes the "how-to" of designing prim clothing, sharing the knowledge more generously than any other deisgner I know
- Catherine Moody, who might not be well-known, but should be, as the most talented pianist I've had the pleasure of coming across in Second Life. She and all the other musicians on SL, who stream their artistry for us to enjoy, deserve recognition.
So there's my rather strange list, primarily of people nobody else will have heard of, but who are people I admire greatly.

Dana Bergman of the Otherworld Island group springs to mind. She (along with Anshe Chung) used to post a lot on the old BBs although she is seldom seen nowadays. One of a group of people of which, over the years on many BBBs, I nearly always agreed with her views.
Her avatar wears glasses, mine also needs to type, shame that

Amongst the Architectural community I would be inclined to nominate 2 talented and RL architects: Rez Mentropa / Scope Clever / Some of the builds they have contributed: Bartlett House AOL pointe Hipcast Conference Text 100 island ITW office Telus Store Kzero I also know that Rez's spouse has contributed to some of these builds (I do not know her SL name) and a few others as well, If I did not mention you and you had any part in these builds please accept my apology, I am an Architecture student and I usually follow the builds of those stating to be RL architects, these are 2 that are using the SL platform as an extension of their RL professions. Keystone Bouchard is also another RL Architect using SL as an extension of his RL profession, these 3 are my inspiration to continue experimenting with the possibilities of SL.

But we both know that you and I are both thinking about a certain someone else in this context ...

!!! Just saw this. Quite flattered, but I assure everyone that I'm only known because, well, I'm a forum blabbermouth. I post fairly frequently, and that's about the *only* thing that makes me stand out. There are a zillion awesome communities on the grid; many you have never heard of simply because, well, they are kinda quiet. As most should be. I'm absolutely crazy about an area anchored around the main sim: "The Wastelands" and the incredible community they have there. Also, I have the rare privilege of knowing a LOT of people through my biz, and like they say of serial killers too, "it's always the quiet ones." Usually the most creative, incredible types are doing just that: creating. Which means: not gossiping, not socialising, not well known. I remember back in Sept 05 when nobody had heard of Yuriko Muromachi and Silver Rose - yes, Yuriko who practically defined Victorian era clothing when there was *some* out there, but *nothing* like the market now - then, nobody had heard of her. Mindboggling today, but true then. Here are some others like that, soon to be very well known: Persephone Gallindo, architecture and theatre. 713 Ayres. Many of you are already familiar with her 'first life' work. Nomasha Syaka. Can build like nobody's business.

Sarah Nerd
YadNi (I forget his last name, not that he needs one)
Abramelin Wolfe (owner of Abranimations, I think he sells more animations for overriders than anybody)
SL Loony (unless he's a "bot" account?) of SLCasinos
Torley Linden
as far as celebrities besides Lindens, most of them seem to be "famous" only among a certain subculture or scene. The punk rock scene has a few, they call em "scenesters" not celebrities though...
A few Sims w/ hundreds of regular users like Midian City have thier celebrities, etc

Hard to have a conversation about SL celebrity without mentioning Mash Mandala and Baccara Rhodes. Together they operate what I think must qualify as the largest single store in Second Life (covering four entire sims) and Baccara is well known as the grande dame of SL. Through her Spellbound team she has created some of the most amazing projects including Oz and Neverland.

From: Sterling Whitcroft Actually, I see several people in this very thread that I'd nominate... but I'm afraid of being called a 'Suck Up' So, excluding present company, I'm really impressed with Jopsy Pendragon. Class act. Her Particle Lab is a pretty self-less contribution to SL. ? Her? noooOOOOooooo!!!!! I have gotta butch up my profile pic or something. (Thanks for the mention though!) There are a few names missing so far, (unless I missed them), in no particular order I would add: Khamon Fate, (heck, I'd say all the "Fates" deserve mention, haven't met one that didn't have tremendous talent and style!) Michi Lumin, Angel Fluffy, Dane Zander, Shadow Weaver, ... too many to think of them all. Robin Sojourner (already mentioned but I have to mention her again). I recognized her work instantly and was in awe to find her in SecondLife =) And I was just incredibly flattered to see that she had put a link to my particle lab at her texture tutorial area! Top "Resident Celebrity" on my list definitely has to be Lumiere Noir, Top "Linden Celebrity", of course, Torley Linden!

I'll cast my votes for Robin Sojourner, Chip Midnight, and Cubey Terra. I can't believe I saw Cubey listed only once in this thread! Look in your inventory at the vehicles you got when you were newbs, folks. Chances are Cubey made 'em.
Yadni also deserves an extra mention, and the people who put up the GNUbie store should be famous (at work so can't fire up SL to check who it is). And I miss Starax's work.
Dane Zander's Apollo sim was the first "themed" sim I ever visited in SL. Aside from the fact that he's extremely talented, he's also just an amazing person.
Oh, and one of the "best kept secrets" in SL: Wesley Spengler.

From: Kamael Xevious The USD value of her land holdings is said to exceed 1 million USD, but the problem she has is that she owns so much land that liquidating would see the value of land plummet across the grid--including her own land. Off topic, but this is no longer true. Anshe is known to have owned 550 sims as of late last year (350 owned previously plus 200 ordered before November 15). At current rates, Linden Lab is adding 1000 islands a month, plus somewhere between 8 to 16 mainland regions a day. If you do the math, the SL land market could comfortably absorb all of Anshe's land in mere weeks. And that's even in the worst case scenario, if her islands were dumped onto the market as empty "scorched earth". It would make much more sense to sell the business as a going concern, selling the land along with the existing tenants and rental revenue, in which case the impact on the SL land market would be essentially zero. Mind you, for all we know, she may have stepped up her buying and might now own thousands of islands. I think this is less likely though, since ACS is known to be diversifying and seeking to reduce their dependence on SL for revenue. However, it is true that islands are much less liquid than mainland land, because there is no inworld mechanism for selling them. The pool of potential buyers of islands is somewhat restricted. Also, there is a great deal of uncertainty because we don't know LL's plans for grandfathering beyond the end of 2008 and we don't yet know what the impact of grandfathered islands being "voiceless" will be. These factors, far more than the mere amount of land involved, would probably have the biggest impact on the price that Anshe's islands could fetch.
