Because SL doesn't have a truly "mass media", it's a bit difficult for celebrities to appear - people tend to be famous amongst their own "generation", but then disappear, or be famous within a subgroup but not outside it.
But.. Philip Linden - Um, he made Second Life. Aimee Weber - first SL resident whose business was shown in RL press (I think). Anshe Chung - early and current most successful land reseller. Francis Chung - made the AO that many people use. Starax Statosky - famously skilled and imaginative prim sculptor. Prokofy Neva - famous critic of SL (!). Torley Linden - only resident to retain their avatar when becoming a Linden. I'm sure there's more.. |

Chip Midnight, Cristiano Midnight, Desmond Shang, etc. I scream like a schoolgirl everytime I see a Linden. Maybe there's a market for virtual autograph books.

Robin Sojourner is on my list of SL celebrities.
I've never met her, just exchanged IMs about her products (of which I own many), but I'm always just a tad starstruck when she does answer. |

Robin Sojourner is on my list of SL celebrities. I was going to name her, but I figured it might be a obvious for me to be the one. Lindens were named, but I suspect some would rate higher than others, such as Philip, Torley, Robin, etc. Top designers and sorts like Aimee Weber or Robin Sojourner, Starax (who has done like every artist, and become more famous in "death" ![]() Mari _____________________

Also, each special-interest community within SL has its celebrities who are not so well-known outside of that community, but nevertheless, are names to be conjured with.

Is Anshe Chung a Linden dollar millionaire or a USD....errr....oriental money millionaire? I've heard of him/her a few times. All I've heard of them is that they are a millionaire and are an ancient land trader.

I nominate Natalia Zelmanov, with her entertaining and informative travel-and-building blog (thank you!) and Ged Larson, creator of the amazing LoopRez tool, among other things.
And Robin Sojourner, for her tutorials, and Chip Midnight, whose templates I adore. |

All I've heard of them is that they are a millionaire and are an ancient land trader. The USD value of her land holdings is said to exceed 1 million USD, but the problem she has is that she owns so much land that liquidating would see the value of land plummet across the grid--including her own land. Further, as I understand it, that figure is based on the price of a new class 5 server, and many of her sims run on class 4 servers. So, while the figure may well be over 1 million USD--it's all on paper and a trifle suspicious (to my mind, anyway). Liquidation would yield a much different figure, I suspect. On the other hand, Anshe's revenues are amazingly high. I've read that her profits exceed 150,000 USD per year. So I seriously doubt she's looking at liquidating anytime soon. God knows I wouldn't. As far as I know, Anshe sold most of her Mainland holdings long ago, unloading them gradually to not cause a crash. The million is not in the game, it's in the bank. _____________________

As far as I know, Anshe cashed out most of her Mainland holdings long ago. The million is not in the game, it's in the bank. Mainland holdings, maybe. Hadn't heard that. But according to the press release announcing Anshe's millionaire status: The fortune Anshe Chung commands in Second Life includes virtual real estate that is equivalent to 36 square kilometers of land – this property is supported by 550 servers or land "simulators". In addition to her virtual real estate holdings, Anshe has "cash" holdings of several million Linden Dollars, several virtual shopping malls, virtual store chains, and she has established several virtual brands in Second Life. She also has significant virtual stock market investments in Second Life companies. Thus, her millionaire status is based on the land value of her privately owned sims, plus virtual assets. The article points out later on that NO real world holdings were included in calculation of that figure: This estimate only includes the valuation of the avatar Anshe Chung's virtual assets at current market rates. It does not include the real world assets of Anshe Chung Studios. It also does not include any valuation based on expected revenue, expected profits or any other intangible business equity (such as brand value or good will). It does not include assets owned in other virtual worlds such as IMVU, There or Entropia Universe. So it does not include "money in the bank." Perhaps things have changed since the press release was made, but Anshe has been very circumspect about her RL holdings. Any guesses as to the amount of money in her dirt bank accounts are just speculation. Kam _____________________

Actually, I see several people in this very thread that I'd nominate...
but I'm afraid of being called a 'Suck Up' ![]() So, excluding present company, I'm really impressed with Jopsy Pendragon. Class act. Her Particle Lab is a pretty self-less contribution to SL. |

I think when we think of celebrities we think of "fame" and spotlights, infact a celebrity IS a famous person.
If you just want to take the dictionarys definition of "a well known person" sure, there are a lot of well known names around here. But at the same time a lot of the names that are well known to one person, are unheard of to another group of people. But as far as the dictionarys definition of them being famous........ lol I think thats all personal. i view no one in this game as "famous". i guess its the same as in RL...if someone is not of importance in your eyes then thats all that matters. while at the same time, theyre name may be known and theres no denying it. (But again, just cus 1000 people have heard of and recognize a name, you can NOT expect another 1000 people to as well) Lots of times, in RL and SL, i dont even know who people are talking about, but its just cos im not into that stuff. I buy what i like, i couldnt care less who is behind it, and the truth is if i saw them walking down a prim built street i probably would not even recognize them, well, their name. If someone makes something good- in RL or in SL..then great. But truth is many are capable of doing something great in their lives. Rather than people who reinvent things and people love the new style they dish out... I like people who actually bring something of importance and great new-use to the world, or this world. Like- whoever invented the prim. And in RL, famous inventory of things like electricity. I would like to give thanks to people like that. As a designer in RL and SL, I`d rather thank a fan base for any success i ever had, rather than expect them to thank me. |
