I think there's a JIRA proposal in the works (go vote for it!) to include qualifiers in search (e.g. 'and' 'or' 'not') etc. you could search on "'yoga' and 'poseball' not 'sex'" etc.... Boolean operators?! YUM!!! ![]() Throw in phrase searching and limiting by field, and I would be just all kinds of happy. Sigh... if only bad search were the worst of our problems! |

Relevance based searches will just encourage people to split their land apart and make more listings. E.g. if you have a lag factory on 1/4 sim, you can make a whole pile of 16 m^m parcels that each have their own listings in the search, that highlight whatever 1000 or so search terms you want.

I remember from all the old threads about traffic and camping a lot of people saying that camping would disappear if traffic was removed.
Anyone willing to put their money where the mouth is (or in this case your typing fingers)? I certainly dont think camping will be disappearing anytime soon. _____________________

Of course! If traffic no longer affects search results, why would anyone pay people to increase traffice? Exactly. No traffic tied to search = no camping, there would no longer be a point to it. Changing the way traffic is calculated by any manner will just change the way it is gamed. A number of us had a long conversation about this one night, and for every idea on how to change the way traffic is calculated, we came up with a way to game it. The only solution to eliminate camping is to remove the tie between traffic and search relevance. The end of camping would also allow me to visit a few stores I like again, as I will not visit or buy from any place that artificially inflates traffic, as a matter of principle. _____________________

Of course! If traffic no longer affects search results, why would anyone pay people to increase traffice? As a guess, because if there's any large number of people who have to give up on Search Places as a way to be found, in-world advertising will become more important. However, searching for "free money" or "get money" probably won't stop, so selling advertising at campsites could become a business (although as far as I'm aware it hasn't been effective before, but maybe it would be in those conditions?) |

why would anybody have camping if traffic dies?
05-03-2007 16:55
I think some business owners that got their start in SL by camping would provide some camping opportunities to help out the poorer SL folks, similar to the reason I have 2 money trees. An end to traffic ranked searches should definately end the big zombie farms though. I've never minded the places with a few camping spots (especially camping animations that add to the scene - street musicians, gardeners), but an end to the places with dozens of camper zombies is long overdue.

in-world advertising will become more important. Definitely! Will this increase the demand for ad farms? I doubt it. I don't know anyone who even GOES to ad farms...and also, Second Life magazines might see a huge boom in advertising and the demand for such... |

On the negative side - this will slow the growth of second life. And concurrent users will drop for a while. How can i comment on this without being so sarcastic as to actually create a rift in the space-time continuum? I can't... sorry... lets just try the straight forward approach. For Phil's sake, can we please slow the growth of SL and reduce concurrent use. Campers can go straight to.... You know what... the forums are bad for my health and sanity, and just make me want to say things that intelligent people *should* be above... so I'm leaving. * * as an alternative to forum frustration, im going to go sit in-world and watch my sims performance drop to nothing every time someone TPs to it. Egad, why do i play this game again? Oh right... addiction! It sure as hell isnt the ever increasing quality and phenomenal customer service. Like my T-shirt says. "Second Life: Because crack just costs too much" OK... I'm done. |

I think you're right on the mark with this statement. Sure, you'd have to pay the $30 listing fee for each parcel to be listed in places - but for most stores, this would still be much cheaper than paying 999,999 or whatever for a classified ad. I mean, with relevance searching, how much more relevant can you get when you search for "refrigerators" than with a 16 sq.m. parcel named "Refrigerators" that's part of a larger store? LL could limit the number of parcels a person can list - but then they'd cause a lot of problems for the big business owners who own multiple properties and people who rent out a lot of property. _____________________

Exactly. No traffic tied to search = no camping, there would no longer be a point to it. Hehe.... There is no point to having Simple CopyBot Defeater or any of the 100 or so workalikes, but they still exist... I bet there would still be a bunch of camping chairs and the like, but I sincerely hope that you are right and that there would be far less. . _____________________

Anyhow does anyone have the quote where they actually are goign to remove traffic? Since it seems debateable that was even said. |

I kinda liked looking at traffic stats i hope they dont remove them completely so we cant see how many people visited. I'm not sure how they will deal with property listings though because everyone pays the same amount.

No more traffic? *Dances the jig* Yipee! No more camping, no more zombies, no more idiots!* Well maybe the idiots who game the system will still be around plying their trade in a different manner.
Now we can return to the good old days when the quality of their product meant more sales for a shop instead of the number of bots, alts, and zombies at their store. Now I can can finally go shopping again. ![]() _____________________

Adios Traffic
05-03-2007 19:49
Well I have to say if LL follows through with this I will start the biggest prim/particle bonfire SL's ever seen, collect every camping chair (or like) I can find and throw them in.
I have wondered in my almost 2 yrs in SL now, WHY why LL implemented traffic as the search system for SL? Everyone knows camping chairs are hell on a sim/server, that with the extra added zombie avatars on the sim, you have the biggest crap hole ever seen, I too am one who will not shop at locations with camping chairs, sometimes though it's not that I dont want too, it's that I just cannot. Ever tried flipping through a vendor in a sim crammed full of camping chairs with 20 zombie avatars sitting on them, that's right, you cant. In my honest opinion LL has allowed "avatar squatters" to destroy SL. The ONLY reason camping chairs were invented is because of the insane traffic search system. Get rid of traffic, say goodbye to camping chairs. There is no bonus incentives for traffic anymore, and hasnt been for a long time, and now if traffic is taken away - there is no doubt camping chairs will be going as well. Unless there are some really insane people who like paying people for no reason. I get so frustrated to search for something like "outdoor", to come up with "blah blah sex club" as the first match in find. And lo and behold if I tp to this "blah blah sex club" wouldnt you know it, they dont have ANYTHING I'm looking for. It just so happens that the word "outdoor" was somewhere inside their business description. Nothing irritates me more, than false advertisement, just because a "word" might bring up your business, is no reason to use it, if indeed you do not have anything pertaining to it in your business. Irl, could you advertise ice cream, and sell clothing, and get away with that for very long? I highly doubt it because there are laws against false advertisement. I just have to raise a question here: in real life (and yes I know SL isnt RL), but in RL we have a system for listing your business called "the yellow pages". Do we complain that we have to search for "physicians.....ear, nose, throat....Dr. Brown, Farmer"? No, we know that it is what it is, search for a category that you are looking for, and then subcategories, abc order, until you find what you are looking for. Most of us who are looking for something different use the "new products" section of the classifieds, or tp directly to stores we have shopped in before to look there for any new products they have up. I seriously doubt many people search for something like "clothing" in the general search tab, and start at the top, and go to every single place. Now, while I'm on this kick I have been brainstorming as to how LL can replace the old traffic system. I propose that each business, etc, who wants to be placed in the "search places" should be allowed 5 "business tags" to go with their business. For instance...If you are a clothing store, you may want to pick things such as "Clothing, punk, formal, shoes, jewelry", if you are a club you may use things such as "nightlife, dj, music, club, strippers", so that the public has a general idea of what your business is all about, without flooding the search with every single word of a description, also cutting back on the false advertisements, and the heavy load on the DB using all the words as search words *which isnt working now anyway*. I dont propose getting rid of business descriptions, just not using the words inside descriptions to search by. I'm just hoping by the removal of this, that maybe now some of the "little people" who have been hidden in multiple pages of false advertisements, and false traffic can finally get their day in the sun. Thanks all for listening, Xaria *steps off her soapbox* |

Search results should be based on drop-down menus within each entries description with pre-set descriptors that the lister choses to describe their location. In other words typing in the description area would not be allowed. All that a lister should be able to do is click the down arrows on a pre-set number of windows, say three, and within those windows pick those three tag words that best describe their businesses.
It seems really silly to me to have businesses that their primary product is textures, to put out one vendor with a hat, and be able to list that they sell hats in their description so that when a person searches for hats their business is the first one that comes up even though there may be ten legitimate business that a potential customer can be more conveniently and better served by. |

What exactly are you betting? That they will get rid of traffic? That traffic will be taken out search places? That camping chairs will disappear, if it does? What is the bet exactly? What are odds are you laying? _____________________

I AM at the top when you search for what I sell. I also probably COULD afford to pay my way onto the top, but there's no way in hell I would. Where's the fun in that? I got where I am from putting effort into my store and filling a niche, which is pretty darn fun if you ask me. I don't see any benefit at all to this, it would only serve to make SL less fun for me.
And further more I don't even use camping chairs. I got all my traffic legitimately. |
