From: Lindal Kidd It's true that a lot of the complaints about the new Communicate window weren't addressed. Maybe that's why I'm not very sympathetic. I love the new communications window and have from day one. I think it's far from what it should be but I like it much more than what it was. I did break down and try Dazzle even though I said I wouldn't. A friend convinced me to give it a try because he really liked it. At first I found it difficult. It glared in my eyes. I was worried I wasn't going to be able to use it for very long. After about an hour and a half though I got so I liked it. Now, I've put it away. I'm done with my brief test and I'll wait until it's fully released.

From: Oryx Tempel I do too. Me three. And I like the changes in 1.19 even more. Now, if they'd only fix the bugs like the cursor sticking in the communicate and chat windows, and the funny inventory window behaviors, we'd be golden.

I am also a fan of dark, with light text on the same dark background. My screen is backlit, it's not a piece of paper, and looks like it's not going to be a piece of paper any time soon. Lindens (or creative others out there who got this when it was code released, or what was it) please us the ability to EDIT these colours/skins/whatever you want to call them... (Like Winamp and StyleXP themes) THEN you will have something. For now I will stick with simple. Dark, and simple I have so many windows on my screen it's just more obtrusive with the silver-blue that it was already. Hehe.

.d That's the same with me. I keep hearing how wonderful the Nicholaz client is and I would love to give it a try but not until there's an option with the new communications window.

I have to say this if nothing else started me looking for alternative viewers. OnRez has the good old friendslist back! YAY! Plus I can shrink my windows. What other ones are out there? It's neat but still too bright for me...

From: Oryx Tempel Ceera, I don't understand what you're getting at here. In my Dazzle, all the unused windows are virtually transparant when not in use. I actually found it difficult (for a split second) to remember where I had put my edit window because it was so subdued and clear. Odd. I tried again today, and the unfocussed windoes were 40% or so transparent at the edges, and maybe 10 to 20% transparent in the text display areas, like in the local chat history. I could have sworn the first time that the dark blue field where the chat history was displayed was about as transparent as a brick of lead... I'm on the Mac client, by the way. Haven't tried yet with my Windows sytem. Maybe I was just blinded by the glare of the overly-bright UI...

FYI: All of the 3d artists I've known personally and worked with ALWAYS set their applications UI to a darker set...not lighter. A lot of them make the main look dark gray with lighter grays and reds as the accents and highlights...or they go dark gray. Never, ever, do you see a cg artist make their UI a lighter, powder-puff color. I know I know...a few of you are saying, 'well, who cares what a designer/modeler thinks'...well, I bring it up because SO many of us in SL are cg artists, builders, and designers... If LL took note, they'd see that the general graphic and 3D applications sway towards a gray theme--this has been a widely accepted, and unobtrusive color scheme for design and modeling. The most preferred design color scheme for me: http://discussion.autodesk.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/223-511218-5368466-127400/MC_MaxView.jpgThe second preffered design scheme: http://mentallic.planetunreal.gamespy.com/Tutorial/Images/UI.jpg

From: Farallon Greyskin I tried it out when it was just a "skin". The one real problem with it is that it is far too bright, the UI becomes the main focus and the graphics fade into the background. When you inn a dark area or the lights are low in your room/office the brilliant UI is a real eyestrain What they need to do is make it so you can change the brightness/color/transparency of the UI. Then this wouldn't be an issue. I mean the entire UI is rendered in the 3d pipeline as it is, why not give us control over it's appearance? Hell "Even Windows" allows you to change to color of the UI. I agree 100%, I didn't even install it yet (not sure I want to), but the screenshot alone almost made me dizzy. I like the fact that in the Blog, both UIs are there for comparison in the same pic...showing how much easier it is to read the current UI in-world...ridiculous. ...and the idea of forcing all of us to use to BEFORE letting us make custom skins, or change color & contrast is stupid.

The idea of having UI "skins" would be a very, very good one - you see it on so many bits of software nowadays. Then everyone can have it exactly the way they like it. Is there a JIRA I can vote for somewhere that suggests UI skins?
