There had voice* way back when I started in 2003. It isn't trying to copy SL. Some ideas are not exactly revolutionary.

*and about half the people used it

I remember you from There!

Way back in the day, There was a much more mature platform when they left beta. You had vehicles that worked, voice chat, lower lag, and zoned property. What happened is that development for content came to a standstill. New things stopped coming out. The last new thing that was there before I left for good was a Spades game. At the time, it was said that more card games were to follow, AFAIK, it never happened. I also think that There has been through 3 different ownerships. There was also a military application that took most of the developers away from the VR side of There and that is when things started to fall apart.

One thing that SL has done, is learned from the mistakes of others. They have not just left things alone. They have been adding features and giving us more tools to allow the world to grow and change. For all the fault of SL, one thing they have not done is stood by idle.

Well since we are talking about this there is another one out there too on a whole other level but its been around for a very long time. I got in on it when it first started. MTV in fact used it for a long time in the 90s for their chat system. At that time it was developed and owned by a company called "OnLive!". There is endless worlds and instead of a body you have a head that you create. The face moves and your lips and the software uses full voice for chat with 3D sound. This system somewhat died out after MTV left it however it remains today. Its now owned by a company called "Digital Space". Most people still on it are people like me from the old days of it but it keeps it alive.

I have often wondered if this is where the idea of Second Life came about only because they were the first ones out there to do something like this on a large scale. Of course its a whole other type of world... There is no selling and all that. Its just made to meet and chat however you can create your own worlds. There is no land to buy and sell. In fact since SL is going to voice they should really take a look at this system. They have it down perfect.
