From: Gummi Richthofen Can you point to where this was said? There's still sticky threads in the tech forum that deal with setting processor affinity, so it can't all be plain sailing. Or, should those threads now be un-stuck? Thought there was a better reference to it but this is all I find right now.. Maybe I (or somebody) will dig through the previous FirstLook release notes and find something there. From http://forums.secondlife.com/showpost.php?p=1393882&postcount=36 From: Tofu Linden ...When Firstlook gets merged to trunk, OpenJPEG decoding will transparently happen on another thread, which certainly helps cure its general framerate-killing. This matches what I know I've heard LL say before - the texture decoding stuff is now in a separate thread, which multi-processor machines can farm off to another CPU. From http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/01/09/pre-town-hall-answers/ From: Cory Linden ...fair warning about several major changes that are currently in testing that we hope to release in Q1: * Multithreading in the client for rendering and texture decodes. This offers a significantly smoother experience and speed improvements on multi-core/multi-processor systems. The message handling, texture decoding, and texture management portions of the viewer have changes a fair amount to accommodate these changes. From http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/12/20/town-hall-with-cory-introductory-transcript/ From: Cory Linden ...Changes like moving textures to HTTP, multithreading, VBOs, and improving the oct-tree culling/occlusion code are all underway and will continue to roll out in the next few months. Especially in the brave new world of everyone having multi-CPU and multi-core machines, this has the potential to make a pretty big difference on absolute performance, but even more importantly, to reduce the stutter that is such a part of the existing viewer experience. ... These are more saying "it's coming" than "it's here" but I have a multi-core cpu and SL seems quite happy with it...

Oh it's not said anywhere really. I make it a habit to dig into the internals on the SL client with each new release. Also, dynamic reflections are available in both the mainline and Firstlook Windlight Viewer. On the Firstlook, it looks pretty groovy - but not for everyone. (Still experimental that) But open your client options menus (alt-cntrl-D) go into client, rendering (I think) and tick off "Multi-threading" - you're done. SL will then spread amongst all of your cores (watching it on 8 cores is phenomenal). This is of course out of my personal main memory with is prone to checksum errors - I will need to go play with it at home again to get the exact dirt but the multi-threading is there. Lindens are just too damn sneaky and bury alot of neat options into the client menus and debugs that they just do not advertise. I.E. I turned off my silly hand-waving animation while typing. It jut made more sense to see my character bob its head when speaking. ;3

From: Morwen Bunin But does Everquest II and Starwars Galaxies run under Linux? Or does Poser/Maya? Will my Ipod work under Linux? Or my PDA?
I think first consideration you have to make... can I do what I want to do under Linux?
And no, I am not against Linux at all. Only sceptical how some real Windows applications will work under it.
And remember, a lot of people are like me... they need help with maintaining their computer.
Morwen. Putting on my geek cap (Sigh... I feel like I am at work... Oh wait I am...) Your iPod will work fine, though Apple won't be giving you iTunes... Your PDA should work just fine with it as well... I believe Maya has a linux version, not sure about Poser as I don't use it... Cedega has a good chance of getting Everquest II and Starwars Galaxies to run... But the companies behind those won't support you (& in fact will probably try to get rid of you as WoW did to linux users a bit ago)... Video drivers are really the only downside to Linux (& strangely Ati... err AMD may be the one to fix that)... I use it at work and for their purposes it's great, but then they need a machine that runs with an internet connection and not much more... *breathes a sigh of relief and takes off her geek cap* Ok now back to being my usual fashion diva self and forgetting I'm at work where I should be doing things... ^_^

Morwen. You can get your geek to set up a dual-boot system, wherein you can use Linux on day-to-day stuff, lots of games, most Office stuff, etc. There is a Linux version of iTunes out there; search Google for 'iTunes Linux'. I've yet to test that. if you don't want to bother with dual-boot (which can be a pain in the butt) you can put a "virtual PC" on top of your Linux system; it will run Windows just fine as a process. That way you can do all that groovy stuff with iTunes, etc. if you really want to. And yes, your PDA will work with Linux. What do you think the geeks carry?

From: Oryx Tempel There is a Linux version of iTunes out there; search Google for 'iTunes Linux'. I've yet to test that. It isn't actually iTunes and it's not made by apple (Oh and it most certainly does not use the iTunes music store!), but their is a tool which mimics the basic file transfer and music player parts of iTunes and allows you to move files... I've used it at work, we run Ubuntu and it's mentioned so we tested it to see what it is. Calling it iTunes though is asking for trouble...

Seriously, tho, I just had my geek install a virtual PC running Windows onto my Linux system, since iTunes is the ONLY Windows thing that I use anymore. Very good point, TheShadow.

From: Gummi Richthofen c) sysadmins: $4,000 of IBM fault-tolerant workstation with 256 MB of RAM and a mouse with a depleted-uranium ball. Nope. "My" sysadmin (a good friend who works for a large Ducth company) took care of my computer. She looked closely at the software I used and decided on that what would be good for me. And she was right... It runs awesome. Only thing she was carefull with was the graphic card. As she said, why spend a lot of money when you will not use it really? So she adviced to try it with this X1300 Pro. If it would turn out to weak, we could replace it always..... but for now, there is no need for that. And it all for a very acceptable price. Morwen.

Morwen. Most non-network games/applications work just fine. As for your Ipod ( or probably any other such program ) shouldn't be a problem and will work, in fact if you want to be different :- http://www.ipodlinux.org/Main_PageWhy not have Linux ON your ipod PDA - don't know but some sort of interface I'm sure will work. http://appdb.winehq.org/ is good for checking Apps'. SWG seems to work fine, EQ2 currently possibly flakey. Poser works fine. Maya has a Linux version.
