It's tough to follow that last post but....
I played Half Life and HL2 for years, along with Counter Strike and Counter Strike Source. Yes, there's a big difference between dedicated FPS games and SL: excellent movement and graphics vs. an unlimited variety of situations and opportunities. I've only played HL2 and CSS twice since my first go at SL, so you can see which side I came down on in the discussion.
One new stripped down combat group is Total Combat. It's just all FPS all the time, with a variety of weapons. Although some weapons types are banned, most non-HUD weapons are allowed, so you can use anything from a knife to a .50 BMG Barrett. There is no role play at all, you just jump into the sim and away you go, which can be refreshing. Excellent game, they have a fairly good health HUD and spawning system. I like it, and it seems to get better all the time. Right now they have a desert air base sort of motif, and a few more are in the offing, I believe.
On another note, I've set one section of my sim aside that is something along the lines of a big-game preserve, mostly natural and damage enabled. Not sure where I'm going with it, but it's fun. I have a vague notion to develop a hunting game or something along the lines of "Sniper's Paradise." IM me in game if you want a look.
Good luck.
