Aspects of SL that would interest a role/first person shooter player?

I am really interest in getting my RL husband to play SL. He is really into World of Warcraft, Battlefield and games of the like.

I have shown him SL many times as well as explained the concept to him. He said he wouldn't try it unless I can find an objective or shooting type game like he usually plays.

Does anyone know of anything in SL that would interest my RL husband?

This might look interesting to him:

http://cityoflostangels.biz/wiki/faq.php?cat_id=1

(I don't know anything about them so if they are actually a ring of international terrorists, my apologies. By sheer habit I like running queries through Google a lot, and it just looked close to what OP was trying to find ...) Since it is your husband, just a warning that while apparently sex is not the MAIN focus of the group, it apparently can be an element at times. That's just from reading their FAQ, as I said I don't know anything about them. No, really. It looks significantly darker and more adult-themed than WoW.

If that doesn't look appropriate, check the bottom of this page for about a dozen combat-game oriented sims:

Hell’s Kitchen - Dark Urban Roleplay

Second Earth Pheonix Pass - Medieval Fantasy Roleplay
Toxian City - Dark Urban Roleplay
Vampyr Haven - Dark Roleplay & Nightlife

Maybe you can tour a few and see whether anything there looks to suit hubby's fancy.

Honestly SL might just not be his cup of tea, so to speak.

My mmo background before SL was playing WoW with my husband, and role playing. I wandered over to SL and he just can't find anything interesting to do here. So he plays a little WC3 and magic online and I play second life. Some people really aren't looking for what Second Life has to offer, which is fine.

That said, it's always nice to force choke them into making at least *one* avatar so you can ninja it for group making and such >.>

If he is heavily into role play maybe... but from a first-person shooter perspective I doubt it. In a shooter the weapons are pretty much the same, and there is a large component of skill in besting other players. In SL, from what I have seen, it is who has the best set of scripts. It seems I have heard there are combat sims where the weapon types are restricted to minimize this, but the interface does not lend itself to accurate and timely targeting of opponents in my opinion, nothing like the twitch-fest you can have in shooters. I spent almost 6 years playing shooters, but have not even bothered with it in SL because I just can't see it being anything but disappointing. Now he may find things more along the lines of WoW, but then WoW did nothing for me so I have not looked for that either.

Hi Callie

Like your husband my background comes from mmo's such as Everquest (which I still love), CoV, SWG etc and before that FPS with Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament. My partner had tried on several occasions to get me to come into SL as he thought I might like the creating aspect as I always enjoyed the crafting in the mmo's I'd played (which is nothing like here in SL). Each time my partner tried to entice me into SL he failed as I never really took to it. But then about a month ago I came into SL more out of curiosity for myself rather then my partner trying to get me to try it and here I am a month later loving every minute of it. I think it might be best just to naturally allow your husband to come round to the idea of SL and see what happens.

Try Samurai Island. Very cool combat with swords. Several other sims have their combat system enabled.

Whatever you do don't force it apon him. He will just not end up liking it if you force him.

NoR is a good place to find combat. They roleplay all the time and my first day I died twice. hehe It is experience based so have to go and earn it so not to die so easily. They accept all types so get in him game, dressed and a free CCS set up and let him go wild.

Why is there so much "dark" roleplay and why is it all the same? CoLA and Norsim are just slideshows because of all the lag from bad planning and scripting, the whole "/me catches you and rapes you" stuff is corny and unimaginative. I guess sex is the alternative when originality isn't working for you...oh, wait, I'm in SL. Nevermind...

I just wish there was a good, solid RP sim and group with a unique concept and a well thought out backstory for everyone to work on and clear rules to keep a decent atmosphere. No more of this "I'm a rebel vampire neko with a bling cod piece and a shotgun". No more "It's a future where mutants arose from the forests" to explain why there are furries fighting demons and robots.

I'd hook it up myself if I could afford a sim and didn't have other things going on in my life that are more important. Oh well...

i have never done rp on sl so i may be very wrong but, im the past RL RP sessions one of the biggest factors in having a great session vs a poor one is the DM/GM who leads the way.

do RP's in SL have DM/GM's to keep the game moving and provide the 'back end' work? or is more of a /b/ randomness to it here?

Don't forget Little Mos Eisley, a Star Wars RP sim that includes plenty of combat.

There is also Tatooine, another SW based RP area that allows combat.

You could show him Jessie (an old sim with a well known rep for combat, urban based theme... but not RP, unless he wants to).

Ditto for Rausch.

If he likes Star Trek, take him to the sim of Galaxy. Lots of RP (very little combat except on pre-scheduled "away missions", and the players must still RP in that).

There are Farscape groups (I found a Nbari skin and outfit last month... VERY well done one. And at Chosen Few's Sci Fi museum I found a Peacekeeper uniform). Babylon-5 groups. Even a Serenity/Firefly group or two.

If he prefers modern era, a RL friend of mine who talked me into joining SL, found a UH-1 and semi-modern uniform, equipment, and a group that enjoyed RP'ing a period of their past.

Another dear friend of mine got into the Gor thing here. She convinced her hubby to join. She introduced me to him and he told me he didn't think he would like SL. That was 6 months ago. He's a warrior in Gor now (and the 2 don't associate, each does their own thing) and he loves SL... he's on more than she is now.

There is something for every taste in SL. Your hubby just needs to look.

Isn't there a fantasy roleplay sim too? With elves and orcs? Swords and sorcery? I know there's a Dune roleplay sim around and a Final Fantasy sim.

From what I've experienced the key to good SL RP has been strict rules and a solid back story.

I RPed in Gor for a few months and all that kept me was the swashbuckling that being a pirate rewards you with and the super involved mythology and backstory that having a series of books to base things on gives you. I never read any of the books because, well, they're corny. I also didn't participate much in the slave aspect other than selling a few people I caught, but I have a deep respect for Gorean RP.

I also spent a long time RPing in a place called "Sigil" that was old western. It was initially run by a Gorean and had a few fugitive Goreans doing things. It wasn't focused on sex (although that happened plenty like RL) and had it's own culture and storyline develop naturally. But like all things it went away and it's equal has not been found!

So yeah, solid, detailed back story and strict rules and guidelines to keep everything in line and not turn into when your parents make you play with your sister or female cousin and it ends up being Barbies or My Little Pony vs. Star Wars or G.I. Joe. That's rampant in SL RP imo.

I regret that huge sections of Gor have turned into never ending FPS battles of bowfighting between Panthers and Outlaws. Lydius, for example, is like the Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove." There are 4 groups of Panthers and outlaws that are constantly engaged in meaningless combat for the purpose of keeping their adrenelin spiked on FPS action.
