From: Jannae Karas I found myself in just this situation. It nearly cost me a very large land deal. I was able to get my premium account cancellation nullified in a matter of minutes once I was able to talk to a live billing person.
Better to keep the account until one or two days before renewal fees are due.
I would bite the bullet and remain in world with the original name. You could always make an alt, form a group, and give the alt permissions on the land and objects the premium avi buys. Then use the alt as your main in world persona.
Better yet, make an alt and buy land off of the mainland where premium account status is not needed. You will probably be happier there anyway unless you like ad farms. You will keep getting 300L$ a week from Mr. Ihax in any case. the reason why these things happen is because it's relatively difficult to locate this sort of information in the SL help pages, OR this sort of information simply does not exist at all.
