Trees by Eric Linden?

Does anyone know where there might be a forest made from Eric Linden's trees? How about a place where one could purchase some of them?

Thanks for any help.

They are already all in your inventory and free to copy and create your own forest. Search pine, poderosa, oak, palm and you will start seeing the linden trees and which folders have them in your inventory.

I love it when I help someone (since it happens so rarely).

I wish more people would use the linden trees and plants to decorate with. Saves on prims, which is why I love them, and they look a lot better than flickering prim trees (some, some are great).

Looking at the detail of the oak tree with the orange and brown leaves was one of my first magical moments when I came to SL.

Also saves on texture downloads.. I've wondered how much bandwidth and asset server cycles could be saved just by, for example, replacing all the different 100% transparent textures with a single one..

I only recently started paying attention to texture downloads after doing a full build on one of my sims. I was actually amazed at what a difference it makes having smaller textures etc. You dont really lose much in detail, if anything, and the load time shows much improvement.

The only single downside I have seen to a linden tree or bush is if people put them too close to land borders and at close range they 'bloom' into buildings etc. Other than that, hands down, they are the best landscaping item in the game. Where else can you get 500 waving individual leaves for 1 prim?

Has there ever been any talk about how those trees were created? I'd be really curious.. just some crazy tortured prim?

Linden trees are not prims, tortured or otherwise. Like the avatar, and like the ground, those trees are mesh models. It's a little hard to tell whether they're constructed procedurally on the fly, or if they just cycle through a series of preset meshes for each level of detail. I've never examined them closely enough to try to figure it out.

In any case, they've got nothing to do with prims whatsoever.

With low graphic settings they do look exactly like the prim trees people make though, like four prims put together to make a tree or a bush.

Interesting.. they consume a prim.. yet they're not a prim.

Why can't us lowly peons create mesh objects?

Interesting.. they consume a prim.. yet they're not a prim.

Bear in mind, a prim is just a mesh object that doesn't need to be streamed over the internet because it's already built into the client software and stored locally on each person's computer. Similarly, the Linden trees that are provided are mesh objects that don't need to be streamed over the internet because they are already built into the client software and stored locally. In essence, whenever you place a prim or a tree you are telling SL "place a copy of the locally stored object here."

Incidentally, this explanation also points to the answer to this question:

Why can't us lowly peons create mesh objects?

Because then SL would need to stream the mesh objects over the internet. With a static set of objects provided by LL, all of the meshes needed by SL can be provided ahead of time with the client download. Considering how many problems there already are with lag and errors communicating with the asset server, it would be pretty ridiculous if LL attempted to support user-created meshes.

Another good thing about Linden trees is you can walk right through them!

Yeah how is it possible theyre only 1 prim?

How are they made, anyone know?

They have some weird invisible-ness to them, too.

There was something in the knowledge base about linden trees. I'm mostly speculating here but I think they are able to do what they do, because they have 'sacrificed' a bunch of the normal prim settings, to use that 'data' space to define the tree. In other words, you can't link them, you can't access their contents tab, there's a lot of normal stuff you can do to any other prim, that you can't do to a linden tree, because those 'bits' are unavailable - they were used to make the tree what it is.

In other words, they were made with magic :-)

They are great though. I'm working on an island, and I love the palm trees, the kelp, the tropical plants... even the 'leafy ground cover', looks like a dozen prims when you lay it out.

Guys, did you miss my explanation on the previous page? Linden trees have nothing to do with prims, they were not built within SL, they are externally created meshes built into the client software. They weren't built by going "put a prim here, put another here, apply this texture, etc." They were created in a normal modeling tool like 3D Studio Max or Maya, and the only data SL needs to transfer is "put a tree here."

I rather like the answer "they were made with magic." Its the easiest way to explain the process in our prim addicted minds lol.

My favorites are the tropical plants, they are great for lining and making walkways. Tuck a prim flower bush here in there and its a fantastic ground covering for garden areas. We need a linden rose bush in various colors now. Wish they were still making more of the plants!

For once, I'm glad I was dumb enough to miss something obvious. This has been a great discussion and I have learned something from it I might not have.

Thank you much to all who have posted here.

For no obvious reason, the trees and other landscaping items that were in my Library are not in my regular inventory any more, and they don't work correctly. Many of the plants don't rez what their title indicates. What's up with that?

Also, I created a bunch of 1-prim plants from the create menu, and although some of them are much bigger than 10m tall, if I try to make the palm trees bigger, even the ones that start bigger than 10m, their height snaps back to 10m, making them shorter than they started.

Is it possible to make a 1-prim 20m palm tree, such as should be in my Library?

Shameless Plug: Visit my Arts & Oddities store -- I sell an "Object Finder" that will help you find your keys. Just chat /1 find keys and it will scan a 96m radius and find everything in that range that is called keys, tell you the coordinates, and who owns them. Very reasonably priced :-)

/end shameless plug

I don't know the answer to your first question, but regarding tinkering with the sizes of Linden trees, I know that you have to play with all three figures in order to grow or shrink them to the full extent. It may not seem intuitive but if you embiggen the x and y values, the trees will get taller (as well as wider and longer). I haven't tried growing palms but when I'm inworld later I'll play around with them.

I can also say, rather than using the 'create' function to make plants, I've had much more success dragging the exact plant I want out of the library rather than creating and hoping for the best.
