I just logged in one of my alts that was left at OI, I got the 'move to a nearby area' message I ended up in Pooley with 6 other avatars congealed into one huge cloud Ruth.

A Ruth orgy. :p

going off on a tangent, does anyone have one of the chain mail vests you got at OI, I'm not sure if they are copy and transfer, but if they are I would be grateful if someone would send me one, thanks :)

Shouldn't that be in the library?

If so, then you'll find it in a box of old library contents in the Stillman Free Bazaar.

QFT!

About a month after I joined SL I tried to help a friend get acclimated. This was one of a group of us who came over but this guy had been dragging his feet since he had never been in a 3D environment.

.........

Well, I'm sure you earned good karma trying to help him. ^_^

But, of all those who have never been in a 3D environment before, not all reject the SL experience. [points at self]

Every one of us posting here DID manage to get through the initial experience---whether with personal help such as you offered your friend, or WITHOUT it.

So a valuable question to be answered might be: what quality do we have in common, that those who left In Disgust or In Confusion or In Whatever, did NOT possess?

They'll learn at their own pace. It's silly to force people to learn stuff when all they want to do is look around. If they like what they see then they'll naturally look a little deeper.

A bunch of newbies in a sandbox can have tons of fun teaching eachother.

Newbie 1: "Hey, look what I've found!"
Newbie 2: "Woah! Where'd you get that?"
Newbie 1: "Press that inventory button"

..etc

That's basicly how it was when I signed up, a nice open area with some sign/books I could study if I felt like it. Had a cool small sandbox and a shop with some fun freebies to play with :) Once I figured how to open a box without sticking it to my hand I set out for the "real SL". In total, I spent about three days messing around before leaving.

Recently I created an alt and was horified at the OI. Had a HUD that refused to work and the "fun" of being railroaded into confusing tutorials. Heck, I've been in SL for ages and even I was confused, I felt sorry for the newbies. Even trying to get off the island was a major task, I finally gave up and had my main account offer a teleport :(

I still haven't gotten the hang of flying though, something I assumed I would pick up over time. But, I prefer to walk anyway :)

I started with the old OI where you follow the path and stop at a station with instructions. Just like the OI Public. God I hated that parrot, intimidated the shit out of me.
But anyway….it was linear and easy. When you got to the end there was the little temple with a few signs to tp you away.
The newer OIs were a mess. Eye candy, with way too much walking about.
I put a few alts through on 08/08/08 when they released some new names and the HIs looked like they were an after thought. Still too much walking around looking at signs scattered all over. The new HUD wasn’t bad though.
I say drop them all at HIP. Just like it was in spring 07 when ppl were dropping into HIP so fast there was a constant grey goo blob of avys in the center of the deck. Now that was a sight.

Pat, I'd've sent you a PM, but you don't have that option enabled in your Forum User CP.

Prepare to Fly:
Hit ESC a couple of times to make sure your cursor is out of the Chat entry window.

Basic Flying:
F to start or stop flight.
E or PgUp to ascend (holding E down while standing will also make you fly, instead of jumping)
C or PgDn to descend
Up arrow or W key to fly forward.
Left and Right arrow keys or A and D keys to turn.
Down arrow key or S key to fly back toward your camera.

Advanced Flying:
SHIFT+ the turn keys will make you "strafe" left or right.

Mouselook Flight: This one is great, and I didn't know about it for a long time...
Hit M to enter Mouselook. Hit F to start flight.
Using the mouse, point the cursor where you want to go. Hold the Up arrow key to fly toward where your crosshairs are pointing.

What seriously offends me about the current OI (and offended me enough that I haven't gotten into SL for a bloody year, even though I rezzed back in 2007 - the OI was the bulk of my short experience with SL back then and I didn't like it) is the railroading tutorial.

Some people aren't patient enough for reading, granted, but yet some other people are impatient about tutorials that make you click through. Give me a nice, well-written, properly sectioned, manual - but a manual, not a tutorial that makes me feel someone considers me an idiot and insists that I prove that I can read to some inanimate object! On a webpage. And while I don't condone dead trees, a PDF would be very nice for some people I know too!

But a well-written manual about the social side of what SL really is, where to meet people, what do they do, how they treat each other, what is a bad idea, what is a good one, a guide to places, real pointers, that's even more essential. The best of that I have seen so far is the kit of Forum Cartel notecards, -- well written, some of them, not comfortable to read at all, and most importantly, not readily available to every new resident, and definitely hardly the book I would rather read.

I don't know. I moved my "OI helper" alt off the island a long time ago, and it's too late for me to experiment.

Maybe 2K can tell us. I suspect that when you log in, you will get "Your home region is unavailable. You have been moved into a nearby region", and wind up on Help Island.

The alt I made to see CSI:NY never moved his home location from CSI:NY. For a long time he would end up in some random location when I logged into home. Then I went and logged in one day and whoa, I'm arriving at home, not being redirected! Landed underwater. Looked around. Found out I was in a huge tropical rental land of many Sims.

I guess that means that the Sheep sold off the CSI islands, or reopened them as rental property. After the closing of CSI the islands were closed to the public, so anybody with home set there would end up in some random location, but it appears that they are now open areas again, just not CSI.

..........................

I came into SL this spring, and rather liked the 'city' OI. Well, the city part was for learning to fly and ride things; the Castle part was for your appearance; there was sort of an open building for...what, maps and physical orientation, and then another section for Communication...

I mean, I guess it worked for me: here I am, paying monthly tier and giving LL lots of money. If that's not the definition of 'effective orientation', what is?

I wonder how long that version of OI lasted?

Thanks for the offer, but that was back in 2006 :) As for flying, I can finally fly around, but I tend to run into people a lot :)

Those are the ones they just closed.
Some of the main problems were with the HUD and ppl thinking they couldn’t leave without finding all the puzzle pieces. I was often approached by people still hunting for that one last piece thinking they couldn’t leave until they got it. then they put the EXIT signs to some of the worst Welcome Areas in SL. Though there are helpful people at those welcome areas, too often its just a circus of loud obnoxious types that can really intimidate a new user. But as Mentors, I and the others will continue to help those that struggle with what ever "Social Experiment" Linden Lab throws at us.
Anyway glad to see you’re you made it Ponsonby and are a positive contributor to our little SL world.
Welcome :)

Yes. This is the OI I came through also. But what I did learn there was VERY basic. In one tutorial I was told to get in a car and run over rats because you find many of them in sl. What!?!? It made it seem like sl was more of a game than a social network. The OI's that were recently in place did very little to tell you what sl is all about. Understandable that it's hard to sum it up in one tutorial but damn LL at least try. Once I got off the island I pretty much forgot everything I was just taught and thrown onto a welcome island. I didnt know what the hell was going on. There were a ton of people there, which no one was really saying anything that made sense, and there was lag out the butt. It took me a good half an hour to figure out how to leave and go someplace that might interest me. I would have to assume your a little bit like me, very curious. It was very fustrating at the beginning but my nature made me push to continue. Honestly it took about three weeks to "get" but once I got it I love it here in sl. Many people don't want to go that amount of time to figure something out. I'm glad they are getting rid of those useless OI's but knowing LL they won't put anything much better in it's place.

Your tutorial did not lie. There are indeed many rats in SL. But most of them walk on two legs. :(
