"Linden Lab has chosen to close its existing task-based Second Life Orientation Islands, which have been problematic in so many ways. Instead a modified version of the so-called Help Islands will be used as default user-entry-points instead. " http://www.massively.com/2008/08/11/second-life-shutters-orientation-islands/Time to get your OI snapshots while they are still around, I suppose. OI vei!

Not surprising. When my husband created his alt, the OI was... buggy to say the least. I finally just sent a teleport and got him out of there.

I don't know. I moved my "OI helper" alt off the island a long time ago, and it's too late for me to experiment.
Maybe 2K can tell us. I suspect that when you log in, you will get "Your home region is unavailable. You have been moved into a nearby region", and wind up on Help Island.

Help Island is the new Orientation Island. On top of that, the Hanja welcome area has been turned into a major drop zone. It's back to the activity level I saw last winter when I joined. (^_^) I kinda like the idea of not forcing people through the tutorial HUD... That thing was a pain for me to use. And even more difficult to work out with another person. Honestly, I had the most success by convincing the person to drop the hud and just word-for-word some instructions before showing them the door. (^_^) The only problem I notice is that the HI sandbox is buggy... I rezzed a cube there to give a quick lesson on building... When I went back to select it again, I couldn't edit it at all. It had no owner. The best I could do was return it to myself. (>_<

When I joined in Dec 06, it wasn't forced but there was a path to follow with tasks. It really is not all that hard, but some people just have no patience for this medium. No, this doesn't make them stupid, it just makes them impatient and they have to learn a different way. This is always going to be a challenge.
Yes, this will put a lot of stress on mentors, but some people will not learn by reading alone, they need interaction.

this maybe explains why several posters to RA recently seem to be stuck nowhere with no clue... or not even inworld? perhaps during the phasing out?

Immy, I ran into this "can't edit my own objects" bug too. Thanks, I thought I was doing something wrong. I also found that you have to have the Admin menu on your toolbar in order to create anything at all, although you can rez things from inventory without it.
Do you happen to know...does the bug affect items rezzed from inventory? Can you safely open a box? All I did was rez a worthless prim from my inventory and then delete it.

This makes me wonder: what would be the best way to being in newbies? We've seen a ton of things tried, but nothing has stuck yet.

Give every single newbie a collar and an owner for a week. We can yank them around, tell them how to behave, dress them up (or down), teach them the basics, then let them go be free little avatars in the world.

Lindal: I saw some Q&A chat saying that opening boxes was borked too. And, you were lucky... For me, edit and delete were missing, I had to return it. (>_< Also... I've already created a new alt to see the updated entry process. Basically, a new avatar rezzes in an HI with the simple, unguided tutorial up on the screen. The one found in Help >> Tutorial. So, it's not a guided HUD this time around. Also... HI seems to still be reliant on interpersonal help... Signs and guides are still sorely lacking. (>_< Frankly, some upgrades to HI should have been in order when tied together with the halt of OI. (=_=)y

From: 3Ring Binder so, if OI is your "home" location, what happens then? You can tp home a few times then the system catches up on you. Had that happen with an alt I created through the CSI website, she had for some reason the CSI OI set as home location and after a while she got a system error message that her home location had been removed as "illegal" and she got dumped unceremoniously at some infohub.

It's silly to force people to learn stuff when all they want to do is look around. If they like what they see then they'll naturally look a little deeper. A bunch of newbies in a sandbox can have tons of fun teaching eachother. Newbie 1: "Hey, look what I've found!" Newbie 2: "Woah! Where'd you get that?" Newbie 1: "Press that inventory button" ..etc

So it's dark and I walk off a cliff, and start towards a bridge in the SW of my landing point and then do a quick turn seeing avatars behind me, I approach, one is a one day old newbie, female, the second a male born 5/7/2008 and immediately asks me if I want to buy a home from him for L$10, so…
You: don't be stupid we are newbies we haven't got L$1 yet [12:23] Alan: do you saied me stupid? [12:23] Alan: unholster [12:23] You: but newbies don't have L$ ok [12:23] Alan: ok [12:24] You: I am a alt [12:24] Alan Pikholz: but dont say me stupid or u die [12:24] You: pulling a gun on me isn't a good idea [12:24] You: also damage isn't enabled [12:30] Alan: if u give me that house i will give u my space house
It's not my house the female newbie had rezzed it.
So I find myself in Brampton - Orientation Stations - Need Help? And i am confronted with the old 2003 system of helping newbies, the 'changing your appearance' sign and crappy avatar sets.
To the NE I see another building which I fly to, which turns out to be Waterhead. So I am stood there with 20 plus avatars and no one has said boo to me yet.

Yes, this will put a lot of stress on mentors, but some people will not learn by reading alone, they need interaction. QFT! About a month after I joined SL I tried to help a friend get acclimated. This was one of a group of us who came over but this guy had been dragging his feet since he had never been in a 3D environment. To help ease his transition, I went shopping (before I knew much about freebies) and acquired a nice male avatar for him, rp specific hair and clothing and when he arrived in world tp'd him to a quiet location to teach him some of the basics. I told him prior to his coming to SL that a 3D world was different than anything he had ever encountered (he would get lost going from one IRC channel to another ) but I and all our friends would help him. He lasted about 1/2 hour before saying, "This sucks" and left, never to be seen or heard from again. /me shakes my head Not even a thank you for the time/effort/lindens I spent to help him out
