... and, of course, a monthly premium account in Second Life is less than most other online games cost.
Most of them you don't even get to look at before you provide credit card details to get a 7 day free trial, and then get locked out if you don't upgrade at the end of it.
I think a lot of the problem is that people expect more from a premium account when they can do most of the same things without paying. That's the fault of the free unverified signups - not the premium account, by the way.

continent barons
03-09-2007 09:12
From: tristan Eliot They have not flooded the market. When i see a 100 sim drop with 20 new sims per day after that, then I will consider it a flood. I too feel ripped off by the premium account mis-selling shenanigans, and was hoping to see a substantial crash in land prices once the new regions came on line. However these all seem to be selling for over $US 2,500 each, which will keep land prices over $L13/m2 for some time in the future. I think we are seing the birth of continent barons - trying to make new mainlands to compete with Linden - and they will keep bidding at inflated prices in auctions UNLESS at least one more continent in a different part of the grid comes on line at the same rate sometime soon. Otherwise it's going to be a long wait until prices drop to a more realistic level and a lot of suckers will get hurt on the way.

I agree with the sentiment of people saying he should have done his homework.
When I started SL, I was in the game for a total of about a week until I figured out what going premium would and would-not get me. Tier and land prices were no surprise. I knew the risks involved about not getting firstland. Yet, I still signed up for premium and luckily managed to get firstland fairly quickly and purchased more tier/land soon after that. It's still comes out cheaper than paying something like $60 for a single game.
(perhaps parts of the problem is that many people have never even paid $60 for a single game... because most gamers are software pirates... having to "pay" to play may seem like a rip)

Hi everyone, thank you for responding to my message. i didnt read any of the messages until now, because i thought i would get alot of rude responces and i really just needed to say how to felt, it didnt feel good paying for something that is suposed to be a fun game, only to find out that you really do not get very much in return. i could be wrong, because i have not gone and read different websites and different forums but this is how i feel. also, i have for most of my life, researched everything i have gone into. i havnt felt like i've learned alot from it. i know it is good to find out prices and this is do not mind. but spending my time reading what other people say i should do and how i should do it in second life, makes me end up doing it like them, and not like myself. also, i am not an academic at all, and i try to stay away from it as much as possible (i want to as much as possible live life real life and second life as myself) it would be wonderfull if the people at second life would tell people just what the prices are up front...if there is not a way to do that, then maybe explain that they do not provide you with the land, and that the land is very expensive at times (maybe tell people up front that you will have to have around 15 dollars or more to buy land alone. they keep me at least in the dark and do not give me the information up front and in a way that anyone could find it). i dont mind being called a fool, i have to do things differently or else i wont be able to be myself. but things sould be set up for people to do thigns in the way that is comfortable to them. you do not have to agree, but i thought i would tell you what i feel. From: Dnel DaSilva If you went to premium to get land, then found out you couldn't afford land, well you really should have thought your decision through. It's really your own fault for the predicament you are in. You jumped in head first before seeing how deep the water is.
My suggestion is if you are paying monthly or even quarterly, cancel your peremium fees until you can afford to buy land. And if and when you do, then go back to premium. Just do your homework next time. to be honest, i thank you for giving your opinion, it is really good when people are up front with you... it does not seem fair to be blaming the person who sure did not know about everything or maybe as much as you did when you started out, but wanted to be able to give to something which would give you back something good in return. i know alot of people and goverments in the world are doing things that are makeing things tough for everyone, but should we have to learn about every way that they can cheat you to avoid it, when we do not do the same? it does not seem fair to me. but i thank you for saying what you felt though. to Dirt Paine, Raymond Figtree, Lostmedia Ares and many other people who have replyed here, your thoughts and views were good to hear. everyone's views were good to hear, though i cannot agree with all beause i have to expect the best from this game, and make sure people expect the best from me aswell (not academicly, but as a person) i hope i have said all of this right , i am still new at this, but i thank you for reading all of this and wish you all the best!

I understand the whole no more first land thing because it was being abused. Though I must say it's not obvious to the newbie that even with a premium membership and the removal of first land that the likelyhood of your getting land without having to shell out more USD for LD is like uhm slightly more than nil. Unless, I guess, if you save up the allowance they give you.
What if we had to buy our first land and it could only be sold to other first land buyers? Wouldn't that fix the problem? Or what if even we were given land for 30 or 60 days - just long enough for us to hopefully make enough money to buy land on the open market? After that initial noob period ownership would revert back to the Gov.
I haven't been here long but I'll tell ya what - I'm not gonna go whore myself, OR get dragged around on a leash OR spend the 320ish hours it would to take to camp for the minimum 8K for 512m. Thats not what I came here to do. If that's what I have to do to to own land and be able to build a so called life - I'll just pass and do the RL thing tyvm. As it stands the only acceptable to me way I've found to make money is hippie pay - but to do that I had to lie and give out false information - fraud. That or gambling. But that's not guaranteed.

I notice you didn't mention the two most socially accepted means of getting money in SL... 1) RL camping chairs (aka flipping burgers). Even at minimum wages, it shouldn't take more than an hour or three to earn enough money in one of those camping chairs to pay for a 512 m parcel. 2) making and selling original content.

I think there needs to be more community spirit and whole lot less selfishness, greed, rudeness. Selling content isn't easy, creating good content is even harder. I went premium right away because I figured I rather deal directly with LL then some business or greedy land owner or baron. Luckly I got few deals but if I had been more sensible and especially when I am really frusterated and grumpy I think I should never went premium and made a attempt to build my own community because the hassles often seem bit too much.
