Hello everyone, i am someone who has just bought second life premium after being someone who has played second life for about a month and a half. i am really disapointed in paying a subscription or for a subscription only to find out that i have no land, and cannot buy any land unless i pay alot more money, which is something i dont have. i just wanted to own some land of my own, to build and even to sell homes (i am a big fan of the sims and my family and i have enjoyed creating homes for the sims. i thought this would be just as fun). i have 2200 to buy land, and i thought that would be more then enough. the prices i am seeing for land are really not fair i feel, the spaces are too small and the advertisements around it...they are really inpropor to look at (some with nude people, and with really awful pictures...and this was when i was looking in there pg section). i do not know what to do now that i have this subscription. i bought it to own land and now i cannot even do that. i feel sad that this is what i payed for. anyway, i would really love to know if i maybe do not know something about owning land in second life that i should, and maybe that is why i am having so much trouble finding any land to buy

Be patient and wait till land prices come down enough to fit your budget.

One way to look at it, since you were a fan of the Sims, is that you don't have to buy any boxed software. TSO and any of the offline sims games are what, about $50 at retail? Land prices are pretty high right now, but compared to any other MMORPG where you have to buy the boxed game on top of paying a subscription fee, is $30 such a big deal? It's $20 less than what you'd pay before you could even try most other games, and the subscription fee for a small amount of land like that is a lot less than you'd pay per month elsewhere.

If you went to premium to get land, then found out you couldn't afford land, well you really should have thought your decision through. It's really your own fault for the predicament you are in. You jumped in head first before seeing how deep the water is.
My suggestion is if you are paying monthly or even quarterly, cancel your peremium fees until you can afford to buy land. And if and when you do, then go back to premium. Just do your homework next time. _____________________

Yes unfortunatly you will find very little sympathy from the general community on this subject since it has de-evolved into a feeding frenzy on who can scam as much money out of it as possible. Good luck to you.

Im some what shocked.
I spent a day or two cruising around as a no premium player. After deciding that this may be fun I went ahead and got the premium plan, with the same hopes that the livinglight Yiyuan had. Now when I get home and log in to find that it is impossible to get me a little shop set up and start creating gadgets dont you think I will be a little upset? I think Dnel DaSilva was a bit harsh and should think about the persons state of mind and feelings before being so... shall I go so far as to say rude? Well maybe not rude but pretty harsh to a new member of the SL community. So before you reply to me saying some silly defensive reply about how your justified in how you posted, think well about it and then think some more, remember, we are new and we expect alot, people like you do not encourage us at all, you only discourage us. Im done, flame on! |

A lot of people did their homework only to have the option of First Land taken away from them.
I can't help with the high price of land, but you should be able to find a 512 in a nice area where there are no rotating signs. Try to find one on an established sim that's already built up around you as opposed to one of the new sims where you don't know who your neighbor will be. _____________________

Changes are coming to what it means to be a premium member. You just happen to catch it between offers. Land is really not that expensive. It is no more then what most games cost just to buy. I wish you luck. Or you can cancel your premium wait a few months and then use the fee you would have paid to buy some Lindens.

My suggestion is to buy some land and make something useful to sell on it that will recoup the investment.

Was I harsh? Ya I was. Rude, meh, thats a matter of opinion.
It is still true that what the OP did was not well though out considering after a month and a half in the game he probably had a good enough grasp of the interface to at least take a look at land prices. he cetainly found out soon after. I just don't have much sympathy for people who don't look before they leap, in SL or RL, especially considering all the info was there. I certainly don't disagree that land prices are stupidly inflated and have sympathy for people trying to pick up a little plot for fun or a little business. I'm glad I don't have anything to do with buying or selling land. _____________________

A lot of people did their homework only to have the option of First Land taken away from them. Ya, those people got just plain SCREWED by LL. The right thing for LL to have done was say after this day , any new premiums would not get to buy first land, and any current premium has 3 months to buy first land (with LL providing enough) and after that you are SOL. At least that way people would know what they were getting going in, and current premiums would be able to get what they were promised. But that boat has sailed and everyone is SOL now. _____________________

One last suggestion to you. If you are truely unhappy about the lack of value being a premium member and the cost of land, send a letter to Linden Labs voicing your displeasure. It will have more of an effect than the often ignored forums. |

I certainly wasn't intending to be harsh or inconsiderate of how anyone feels, but just offering another way to look at it. The nature of SL is that it's in constant flux and because of that patience is very much a virtue. You might find your perfect land only to have someone move in next door that you don't like. It's just the nature of the beast, and the best defense against the flux is to be patient. Most people have been through it all, and then some, but if you stick with it, keep your eyes open, and take the long view, you'll have the best chance of ending up where you want to be. Good luck!

Remember also that you can own land on private sims without being a premium member.

If you just want to sell your creations, you are probably just as well off having a rental plot (or two) in a Mall somewhere. It's a lot less expensive than owning land, and you can usually do it on a basic account.
Buying L$ usually gives you a better deal then simply having a premium membership, if you don't want land. Broccoli _____________________

You spent a month and a half in SL and then decided to get a premium subscription...and only NOW you realize that it wasn't worth it? What were you doing for the month and a half? Did you look at land prices? Did you research in the forums here? Did you do searches for first land (only to come to the realization that there never was any readily available?) or were you sitting in a camping chair earning 1 linden per 10 minutes? When you buy a car, do you randomly walk onto a lot with a blindfold on and buy the car that you first bump into? I'm sorry if I come across as bitter, but you spent plenty of time in SL to figure out if this was right for you. As another poster said, spend the extra $30US dollars or so and buy some land. If you went to the store and bought a computer game, you would be doing the same thing...(probably more money actually) If you don't like all of the ugly advertising and clubs, buy some land in a protected covenant area. They are usually very pretty areas because they don't allow businesses and ugly buildings. |

You can rent a 512 sqm plot for L$210 / week, well under your weekly stipend.

You could cancel your premium membership, if you haven't paid in advance for a long period of time, and use the same money to buy or rent on a private sim or rent on the mainland. With renting, at least it's easy to pack up and leave for somewhere else if you don't like your neighbours or need more land.

There are lots of sandboxes where you can build houses for only the cost of picking up the pieces each evening and dealing with random idiots. As people have mentioned you can also rent a small plot pretty cheaply, and mall space can be cheap too, or some even offer free space in return for a % on sales through vendors.
It can be done. _____________________

I really, really don't get why people express so much anger and bitterness over Premium membership.
If you signed up for a year's subscription, you're only paying $6/mo and stipend re-imburses you for over half of that amount anyway. So even if you experience buyer's remorse, it's not like you lost a fortune. And over the course of a year, you may well find that you want to own more than 512m of land and that alone makes Premium necessary. And if log-in caps go into effect on peak hours, you get precedence for signing in. That alone may be worth the price if LL can't scale fast enough. If you signed up for a quarterly or monthly subscription, you can tier down to Basic and still not be out of pocket that much money because, again, your stipend offsets a portion of that cost. At most, you've lost the equivalent of a sandwich you toss in the trash because you're not so hungry after all or a cheap t-shirt you never end up wearing. Whether or not Premium membership is an attractive offer should only be a matter of heightened concern for LL. For players, if you want it, get it. If you don't want it, drop it. |
