I"ve been seeing a new blight of landbots flying around SL, with the peculiar last name of 'BnT'.00000000 BnT thru 00000100 BnT

Ah, interesting.

I had one of those little f****** with the numbers as the first name visit my land this morning and stay for 50 seconds before it left again.

I wondered about the strange first name and the - maybe even stranger - last name.

Now I know. But I have no land for sale, so ..... :p

For a couple years now, yes. But it costs a pretty penny.

We really need to have teh option to ban Groups and specific last names from our lands instead of simply individual full names.

*starts typing in the last name 'Linden' into the imagined land ban list*

In all seriousness,
Second life if for people, not for bots.

So far the only thing I feel the bots have done is create FUD and undermine the confidence In SL for a majority of community.

I for one, rebel against our new Bot overlords.

The heck with that... how about IP banning... individual or a whole network address.

Last I heard it was something like a $100 fee for a custom name.
If they were that cheap, everybody would be getting them. I was under the impression that the rights to a unique surname were acquired with many thousands of dollars. Can't remember where I read that now.

Do the 'Investors' in BnT know what this company is doing with their money? Last I heard it was something like a $100 fee for a custom name. One can simply do the math to see the amount of money wasted on naming all these bots.

From: someone
Terdiman reports individuals will be charged $100 USD to set up a custom surname, and a $50 USD annual "maintenance" fee thereafter. Corporations will be charged $1000 for setup and $500 per year for "unlimited accounts" (which I assume means exclusive, unlimited use of a single surname).

bot or not bot.. what is the difference?
07-28-2007 18:40
if the land is for sale..does it matter who you sell it to, if the price is right?

Beta BnT or Joe Bloggs... would it make any difference to me?...no.

And individual surnames? there is a Linden vetinary surgery not far from me in real life.. i have no doubt it deals especially with furries....:)

Every name in SecondLife is unique..when taken complete.. there may be many BnT surnames, like there are Hathaway surnames.. there is only one beta BnT and one Incony Hathaway, mine came free, "more money than sense" springs to mind, if you paid for yours..
Your name isnt important really... if your selling something, folks are interested in that, not what your called.. try it.... create an idiot name.. and join SL.. buy two pieces of land and then offer one for sale at half its value and one at twice its value..... :)

Would you sell a piece of land at twice its value to "Ima Conman" or "Sir Tainlyabot" if his money was good?

Business is Business.... those who take the opportunity might lose or win.. but those who don`t , keep pride , and personal esteem and vanity, perhaps.. and make noise about how unfair it is that someone is making an opportunity, earn real money..

Qoute:
"In all seriousness,
Second life is for people, not for bots.

Second Life isnt "for" people.. its a computer program that real people use... real people use the bots.. somewhere , a real person decides what the computer program can do.. and uses it, like me.. no difference.

So.. i am in a minority.. am i really?
i know i will be here, bots or no bots... its not a decider, not a vote winner.. if they bug me illegally, according to the rules i will use any legal method to stop it... not make noise.. DO something. They havent yet.

i look forward to seeing an intelligent A.L.I.C.E on SecondLife.. sadly for me, it wont happen i think, in my time... but i must say i believe we are intent on creating conscious machines. Hide away or live with that...its coming... and ive no doubt that a real person on Second Life will have A.L.I.C.E or its equivalent.. as a best friend..:)

One point: Bots use resources that could be better used by thinking Residents (or living as some don't thunk too well LOL). That is my main gripe. I feel anyone using a bot, which scans SL constantly using system resources, takes up too much of the resources from others.

As for A.L.I.CE. that's already in SL *smirks* Someone (forget teh name been so long) has a sim devoted to this and the continuing advancement of such.

Bots are not thinking. They only follow a pre-programmed routine that never varies. That is only a resource (ie robot) not AI. It's not even a step in the AI direction as bots are no more "thinking" than a scan HUD.

If you want to be outraged, be outraged at LL for condoning and allowing the bots. Other than the resources they use, I feel the only reason to be upset about any bot runner is if they prey on mistakes and don't give them back when IMed. Otherwise they are playing within the system, even though their speed and relentless hammering of the land search did put me out of business.

its supposed to be a form of thinking intelligence. The version I tried you have a conversation with it and it spits out relative replies. You can find this online if you look it up and it can be fun. The A.L.I.C.E. version I tried was kinda mean too :P

I agree, its unfair competition, Land should only be purchased by a live human, period.

Well a live human figured out how to make the bots and LL allowed them to employ them. So it's actually fair competition as LL defines it. I just can't compete because I am not a scripter and i would not want to hammer the servers. They are fragile enough, obviously.
