It's probably on a neighboring parcel. Best way to deal with it at the moment, until you can locate exactly where it is, is to mute it.

You can't mute it.
11-16-2006 08:46
The device is IM'ing you, not talking, so you can't mute it either.
These things don't work against any version of the CopyBot except the very first one. I'd get on SLExchange and get Sirlor's finder gadget and use that to track the offensive device down. Then ask your neighbor to turn it off or remove it, and if they refuse, file an abuse report - use of these devices is against the terms of service because they spam indescriminately. |

Kalel, I don't know if there are different versions of the device, but I have successfully muted several.
Just hit the history button, and click mute resident while it is talking. Worked for me Cali _____________________

Worked for me Cali Aaah, that's what I did wrong. I tried to mute the device itself, and that doesn't work. Unfortunately, that means you're also muting the person as well as his or her device. Perhaps this fact will discourage their use entirely. ![]() |

Try this instead -
Go to: View> Muted Objects Click 'Mute Objects by Name' Enter in the object's name exactly. Hit OK. This will prevent the muting of residents. _____________________

Either find the contact the owner or AR them for sending spam. Be sure to give location of the object.

The real problem is that even after you mute it, it's still scanning every few seconds. Get five or six of these in a sim that are scanning every few seconds and sending out IM's to everyone in the sim (even if you mute it, it's still sending you an IM) you get huge sim lag.
I have noticed a huge increase in lag since this "solution" (that doesn't even work) came out. So even if you mute it, be sure to AR the owner. Spam is against the ToS just as much as the copybot is. _____________________

Ditto - how the heck do I find out who owns the thing? How can people not know that it hasn't worked since the first 10 minutes of mass CB availability?

Take a look at this thread:
/54/41/149101/1.html which contains a couple of scripts which you can use to track down the spambot's owner. You will have to know the exact name of the bot, but then, it is IMing you, so you should have that in your IM window. _____________________

Just for the record, most of the !quit messages actually seem to happen in open chat. I can't even imagine how frustrating the IMs would be and I am grateful I haven't encountered them yet.
For the open chat messages, muting the object will work just fine. To do that you don't need to know the creator. Either use the chat history window to mute the object in one click, or type in the object's exact name and mute it that way. Works like a charm with no need to find the object or its creator. Kalel, I'd go with abuse reporting and possibly live help in your case. |

When an object sends you an IM, it doesn't shunt to the "Instant Message" panel.. but appears as "green text" in the "Chat History" window instead. So it's VERY hard to tell if an object is talking in local chat, or IMing you... since they appear identical.
Most of these objects are IMing you. Making it a lot harder to locate them (if they were talking in chat, you could set up a script to listen for the !quit" statement, and localize the source). Wanna see what's really insidious about these things? Turn on "send IMs to email" and get trapped in a "half online, half offline" state.. and watch your mailbox fill up. (even if you've muted the things). _____________________

I have "IMs to email" and after 3 days of shopping and hundreds of !Quit messages not a single one has gone to email. I'm glad the places I've gone to didn't have a fancy IM script running.

MArtin.. I assure you, they're very likely IMing you.
but you have to be in a state where the object tries to IM you, yet you are unable to receive IMs.. and since the objects are scanning for your presence.. they stop IMing you when you log off. but if you get "red mapped" where the scanning object can still see your avatar, and yet you are technically disconnected from the server... (you know, gghosted) then you can get hundreds or thousands of emails from these before the SL server realizes that you're ghosted, and logs you out. ghosting isn't all THAT common on an individual basis.. thankfully. but it does happen. THere's a simple way to detect an object "chatting"... (if you know what it's going to say.. in this case "!quit" ![]() Trust me.. if these were chat talking.. we'd have gotten them all by now. _____________________

Easy enough to tell if it is IMing you or talking in open chat...
Put a channel 0 listener script in a cube and wear it on your hand. If it hears !quit on channel 0, then have it llOwnerSay "I found one!". If you see lots of "!quit" messages and no "I found one!" messages, then it is IMs, not open chat. I guarantee you 99.999% of them are IMs. The ones that are open chat were hastily written by "amateur" scripters who didn't understand the situation. Simply put together a locator script, find the offending spam object, and talk to the owner politely. There's no reason to get nasty, just let them know that it won't work anymore, it is spamming, and is against the rules. You're just the messenger, trying to help them out and keep them from getting ARed. Today, I had a nice, polite chat with one of my neighbors, who had one of those spambots running, and after explaining the situation, pointing him to the SLX item page for it, as well as a Linden Answers post about the subject, he happily removed the offending object. |

This only works against speech, not against objects that IM you. I tried this. This works against IMs also. THe name has to be exact, so best to Copy and Paste from history. |

It's turning out that "Copybot Security" is a worse problem than Copybot ever was, when some idiots have these things spamming on a tight loop. The trouble is, these people don't read the forums and don't know that their spamming is totally useless now. It's even more absurd to see merchants using it to "protect" their merchandise when they are using vendors that are impervious to Copybot anyway.
How can we get a general message across the grid to get everyone to turn off these stupid things now? |

This works against IMs also. THe name has to be exact, so best to Copy and Paste from history. Or you can just select the object from the dropdown combo box in the history window and click the Mute button from there, silly me. And to previous posters, CopyBot does not listen to spoken commands, only IM, so in every case, the !quit spammers are using sensors to determine who's in range and transmitting the !quit messages directly as IM. If your email isn't filling up with !quit messages, it simply means that you don't have IM's set up to forward to your email. Those of us who do are being spammed both in-world and in our email. That's what makes these CopyBot Deleter objects so evil, and why Linden Labs is recommended filing Abuse Reports if other methods for removing them fail. |

Yep.
A group of residents in "my neighborhood" did just that and instead of getting 9 !quit messages every time we log in, we only get 1 or 2 now. Like Daisy said, more users should USE THE FORUMS! _____________________

I didn't realize that about the object IMs... I appreciate the education and apologize for the misinformation.
I guess what I'm grateful for, in that case, is that I've been able to mute all the little buggers I've come across. |
