Personally, I think no list of "Worst destinations on the Internet" is complete without mention of the gut-wrenchingly ostentatious:

SL would have been more accurately reviewed as one of the 5 worst MMORPGS. At least then it would somewhat fit into the damn category. I agree, SL definitely has problems, but not for the reasons described in the article. |

I went back and read it again. I admittedly glanced through it and assumed they were talking about the web site since it's rating WEB SITES. Do they know the difference between a web site and a computer game? Why did they mention WoW?? Whoever wrote that article is just a fuggin idiot that doesn't know about any basics of technology. I generally get annoyed reading Time or Newsweek. It's usually a bunch of assholes that think they know what's going on in the world better than you (even in this case, without actually having enough experience in the subject they touch on). Nothing annoys me more than the "Why Iran is More Dangerous Now" type articles. That shit's for old people that leave their turn signals on when driving on the freeway. They haven't had any relevant commentary on current events in ages. SL would have been more accurately reviewed as one of the 5 worst MMORPGS. At least then it would somewhat fit into the damn category. Word. |

Considering that the reviewer doesn't know the difference between a website and an application, the point is moot. If the article had been titled "worst 5 internet fads" then maybe it might have some credibility.
Not to mention these are the same people who selected MySpace as one of the 50 coolest websites of 2006 when the bloom was waaaay off that rose by then. _____________________

TH Agree. Their magazine, their opinions. And increasingly, I find the opinion of knowledgeable people about Time and Newsweek is, the magazines suck. |

Didn't they just start raving about the Laserdisc? Yeah, they are going to start hyping that new fangled CD ROM technology any minute now.... Throw out those floppy disks, folks!! The reviewer problably had a rotten SL experience because he logged in with Windows ME and 64 MB of RAM.... _____________________

I reckon SL is more like one of the 5 BEST "websites"on the net - given the amount of rubbish there is out there on the net, ranging from downright offensive through utterly stupid to mind-numbingly boring, I can't think SL can be all that bad!!!

They called the actual SL world a "website". Its kinda like when some over 60 media idiot writes about sales of console game tapes. If they can't even get the form of media correct, how credible are they?

I agree with the "TIME" story! The only reason I still hang around is to chat with friends I have made in SL. I have already downgraded to basic. I don't see the point in paying for a service in which you don't get any service!! LL keeps trying to upgrade but they ignore the problems that plague the average user. They let people steal land out from under you and don't care if Ad Farmers and Land Cutters are ruining the experience for everyone except those doing the un desirable deeds! It would be nice for someone at LL to address these problems but they won't. For that reason I tell everyone I know to stay away from SL unless they want to throw their money away! No reason to even get started in SL! If I knew what I know now about SL I would never have joined and wasted A LOT of Money on a service that ignores the obvious!

*sighs* Torley's response strikes me as a "We're going to sulk now..." kind of thing, trying to remind us what is good about SL, while SL is forcefully reminding us what is wrong with it.
Yeah, SL is different, but Philip's dream is for SL to become the internet.. which I guess would mean that SL is technically a website in and of itself. It does have a steep learning curve that might actually prevent it from becoming the metaverse and it's far more glitchy than even the worst of the web browsers and a good many MMOs. Geeze, if they compared it to it's closest relatives in platforms, it would probably still come out on the 5 worst list. *nudges LL* Bring back the forums and maybe Second Life will slide off the 'top 5 worst.' Even better, bring back Live Help, instead of Help Island. Stop touting the place as the "next internet," and start touting it as a 3d chat program. And bug fixes.. bug fixes, bug fixes. _____________________

This Article was obviously written by sombody who spent an hour on Orientation Island, Another hour "Touring" and probably never made it past Ruth Phase for appearance. I used to work in the office of a Major Newspaper, and if Time's editorial mainframes are anything like the ones at the paper, they are six years out of date and would have trouble running Solitaire without Huge Lag. they are simply Not designed for gaming no matter HOW good thier net connection might be.
Why worry though, SL's Population numbers Immediately put the lie to it being added to this List, were it so Awful, would it have even close to this population? I don't think so. Time is just having a slow news week, and is resorting to yellow journalism to Fill a gap. Angel. |

I wouldn't doubt that Amazon, Google and Yahoo (and others on time's top 25 list) ponied up a tidy little kickback for good press from time.com.... and LL likely ignored their polite little extortion memo, if they were even aware that someone at time tried to contact them at all.

Time is just having a slow news week, and is resorting to yellow journalism to Fill a gap. Angel. And what the author went through is exactly what awaits every other new resident who tests SL for 1-2 hours, fights with horrible lag, is griefed by some unverified kids and gives up. The funny thing: they all add to SL's population numbers! Even the author of this article. That's how LL multiplies the user numbers by 45. If you look at the "online now" statistic and multiply it with 5 to cover all timezones, you'll now how many of the 1,700,000 people who tested SL during the last 60 days really stay around. Well, I don't want to be too negative. I'm happy with 175,000 potential customers. But sometimes I wish it were really 7,995,882. Somehow it's not a good sign if only 1 customer out of 45 comes back after testing the product. _____________________

Considering that the reviewer doesn't know the difference between a website and an application, the point is moot. This is pretty much the core of the issue I think... SL is NOT a website. SL HAS one.. but that's not even mentioned in this guys off kilter rant. I might agree the splash page for SL's WEBSITE is a bit gaudy, but the site itself is worthy. The point about all 5 of those choices being social networking sites is quite valid, and this guy obviously has a beef with them... or he's so wierd that even THEY cant help him make a friend. Somebody rez this guy a mood ring plz lol. |

wow, yeah upon reading the little article i have come to the conclusion that the writer has no friends whatsoever. Sure MySpace is cheesy but it is still a hell of a nice easy way to keep in contact with old friends who are spread out across the world, and a way to find friends you thought you have lost. Only people with no friends and no interests could not find MYSpace a simple free tool that is far more good than bad.
SL isn't for everyone but the article on it was apparantly written by a bitter person with little imagination or patience. Dissing e-harmoney was unexpected coming from a corporate entity that I'm sure wouldn't turn down advertising from anyone, especially a company that spends millions on advertising and made me think that we are wittnessing the decline of Time magazine. They are crumbling, biting the hands that feed them as they realise they are destined to obscurity. _____________________
