I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I have a half dozen face lights in my inventory and none of them seem to do anything when I wear them, at least as far as I can tell. Is there some trick to making them work?

the only thing i can think of is going under preferances and turning nearby and local lighting on, cause you might have sun and moon only on

if the came with a note card, check there, the ones i have from Siren use the /facelight on, /facelight off, command, i think, im not in world to check. if they didnt come with a note card, right clicking on it and going to properties should give you the creators name, you cna then prolly im him/her on how to get them working again.

Check your graphics settings in Preferences. You will need LOCAL LIGHTING enabled.

You mean the a face illuminator, right? Mine works fantastic, I just "wear" it. Didn't come with any notecard that I know of. Makes a huge difference in the way I look, especially in photographs. I got mine as a freebie someplace I think. If I remember, I'll look up who the creator is, because this one really works very well.

You might have to put the light in edit and adjust it to where you want it also depending on what else you are wearing. What is it attaching too? Mine goes on my mouth.

I looked up mine, it was made by Taylor Tracer. And mine attaches to the nose, if that helps.

My advice? Don't use them. :)

Now, this is just me...coming from a designers point of view. When a person enters a build of mine with face lights on (especially bright ones), they interfere with my design concept and my own lighting scheme set for the area.

I know I know...that sounds ludicrous. But hey...designers can be persnickety.

This is almost the same thing as a near-by club using lights that protrude on someone else's land...

I understand an AV's face can look much 'prettier' when lit, in specific circumstances...so, if you must do it, keep the light low, with a small radius.

Mine has an extremely low radius, just around my face. And, I've only had compliments on it, people tell me all the time how lovely I look and can't quite figure out what exactly is "different" about my face, until I point out what it is.

If they are done correctly, it is a very good tool to use.

Eh? This might be sculptie hair or hats...lol. Or maybe you're talking about the white ball of voice activation...

Not sure what you mean by floating balls around women's heads...I thought the 'face lights' are transparent.

Oh and yes...low radius is OK...but in my experience, a lot of people have their radius set way too high...and it interferes with everyones experience, and the designers' lighting design and concept...

Seconded.

It's really annoying at clubs when people with facelights are dancing - lots of flickering. :(

That isn't really much help. At any time, the viewer will (can) only render the 6 local lights closest to your camera, if you're using one then that's one less "ambient" light the build can use. Put 6 people with facelights (or the more common theme I've seen which is to wear 4-8 - yes, eight - face lights per avie) and you have no "ambient" light whatsoever.

Face lights are totally unnecessary and a hog.

They wouldn't be they're rezzing, or if you happen to be using the latest WindLight they'll render opaque from a short distance away :p.

Ohh no,

You aren't banning my face light.

You all can just learn to deal.

I get the whole crowded place / special lighting deal but other than that - BLA

And you know what else - BLA

SL does weird things to faces that don't have enough light shining on them. Creases , weird nose corners , chin problems.

I don't always wear makeup when I leave the house in RL, but if my face developed the flaws that my SL face does--- I sure as hell would!

QFT! I love my face light and Sunni's face is a lot softer and prettier with the face light on. I have several in my inventory, but one is too bright, I never wear it. I'm not even sure why I keep it...lol. But no way would I wear more than 1. I've found that one is sufficient to give my avie that soft look. Without a face light, Sunni's face sometimes looks too harsh. Don't face lights work in windlight? I haven't tried WL yet, I'm waiting until I get a new PC to even try it.

a friend of mine said that same thing that face lights never worked for her in windlight, but she could see them on other people just fine.

Storebought face lights are often no mod and of little use to those who are making the jump to Windlight.

If you must have a face light, make one or get one that is mod/copy (IM me in world for one for free). A radius of .25-.35m is more than sufficient, with intensity 1, falloff 0 (or more). You can adjust the brightness to simulate the same coverage you would get with multiple lights (though i have seen some avs look like they just emerged from a nuclear reactor, or had facial bleaching a la Michael Jackson)... so why use more than one?

I see a lot of people complaining about how WL plunges avatars in darkness, and that they (and all their friends) MUST wear 6-8prim face lights.... ironically, it's not WL that's robbing av faces of light in many cases - it is the face lights themselves.

Face lights work fine in Windlight - you just need to be able to tweak the light settings on them - hence the necessity to have at least a moddable face light as per my previous message.

One thing that really screws up facelights in Windlight clients is that local lighting levels change with time of day / position of sun in sky. Local lights are very dim in daylight, much brighter at night.

Best example:

Sit by a campfire or some other prim that uses local lighting, (or sit still somewhere while wearing a single facelight), and watch what happens through the sunset cycle.

Before the sun sets, you can't tell the fire is casting local light.

As the sun is setting, the campfire dimly lights the area.

Well after sunset, the campfire nicely illuminates the area just like it does in the non-Windlight client.

It looks like they are trying to mimic the way your eyes adapt to darkness. If the area is generally pretty dark, a fairly dim light seems bright...

I never really 'got' facelights
01-25-2008 12:00
For one, facelights only work if the people looking at you have 'local lights' switched ON under preferences.

Also, doesn't SL (actually Open GL) limit the number of local lights to 6 anyway, so 6 - 8 facelights are pointless. Even with just one light on your nose, only people close to you in a club will see it (again the 6 light limit will come into play).

Finally, 'turn it down' you don't need 10m radius (the default), as mentioned previously, try a small radius, turn down the intensity and try a big falloff (looks much smoother IMO).

Can I suggest wearing a title along the lines of 'I wear facelights, please enable local lighting to see me as I want you to see me'.

I build and use local lighting in my builds, I also love Windlight :)

I care more how *I* see me. If you happen not to have local lighting on, it's no biggie.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.
