Well, my friend just tried twice today to start a new verified account by linking to his PayPal account, and failed both times. Nice introduction to SL for him - he can't even get a verified account because linking to PayPal is buggy.

Does anyone know if this problem is being addressed? Does anyone care?

Nope, no one cares... execpt LL and anyone that uses SL. Have you tried canceling and re-establishing your Paypal payment agreement? That has worked for some.

I have been having the same problem all day. Even attempted to change payment method. Very frustrating!

Have you tryed "Increase your credit" on the right?

It's badly named, but what it does is seperate the money transfer from the lindeX transaction.

By transfering the money first and then using a limit buy $1L lower than the current lowest "Open Buy Order" you can get a better exchange rate while only having to wait a few hours most of the time.

That's what I have been trying to do today, only to encounter what appears to be the same problem others are describing. The transaction fails and the error message simply tells me to check my billing information.

I see no name/address/whatever in the billing information. My account summary correctly tells me that I'm set up to use PayPal. I checked PayPal, and still have active billing agreements. Plural. I have not yet tried cancelling them and re-establishing them.

All I can say is, it's a good thing my Premium Account is payed up for the next couple of months, now. I had been going month-by-month, and today would have been the day the bill was due . . .

You would think LL would care since they aren't getting any money from people who can't set up a payment source. Sounds like it's been bug reported plenty of times to no avail. I care, not that it does anyone any good. :(

It sounds like the problem is some sort of technical connection between LL and PayPal. Perhaps PayPal might care enough to try to troubleshoot the situation?

Did you check your limit on the PayPal side too? If you established more than one billing agreement, they may be using different dates than LL is to determine when a month starts and ends...so, theoretically, you could have exceeded the monthly limit on one side without exceeding it on the other. And, while you can raise it, I believe PayPal's default monthly limit is $250/month, so that could be a factor once you're past the first 30 days/$150 limit on SL's side.

I am well within my limits..in fact I haven't bought any Lindens yet this month. I normally buy 10K at a time..and replenish at $1500. I think my Premium is due this weel..let's see if they figure a way to take my money then. I tried re establishing my billing agreement, but no joy.

I did not think to check the limits, since I know I'm no where near monthly limits (only bought about $10 worth of Linden Dollars in the past month, plus payed for my Premium membership for the next 3 months).

I have canceled all of the duplicate Billing Agreements, and made a new one, but it didn't help.

24 hours and counting on the help request I sent to billing@secondlife.com with no response beyond the initial auto-generated one.

It's interesting that there has been no update on this issue and it's apparently a widespread issue (I'm having it also, cancelled and recreated the billing about 6 times to no avail and tried both credit card and direct from a bank acount to no avail).

You have to figure that each time a person clicks to buy L$ and it fails, LL loses money since they don't get your real dollars for their funny money. Paypal also loses money on their cut of the transaction.

With two companies losing money each time a customer is unable to have a sucessfull transaction, you think they would be able to get on the phone with each other, watch transactions try to process, and figure out why the ones that fail are failing and therefore get the transactions and their incomes flowing again.

I know they say you can use one of their other billing methods as a work around, but if I wanted to use their other method I would have been doing that already.

We can always hope that whatever they are doing while we're locked out accidentally fixes it, I guess.

Or just keep watching a blog for non-existing updates for obviously an unimportant issue.

My workaround for paypal
03-16-2007 03:27
Ok, this sounds a bit messy but it works. . .
I just went and bought my lindens on ebay and when they are transferred i sold them on linden exchange so they're put into my account as US$. (To pay my account if it goes on that long)
I assume they'll bill from there first.

Paypal Issues
03-17-2007 10:43
We are having difficulties processing incoming payments from Paypal as noted in the blog post updated yesterday http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/03/13/paypal-billing-issue/

This is a very important issue that we are giving our full attention. We have developers working alongside Paypal to determine cause and implement a fix. Unfortunately the process of finding the problem is not moving as quickly as would be ideal, but we are still working hard with Paypal to correct the issue.

Please watch the blog for updates and do try the knowledgebase for answers as all your issue may or may not be related. As noted in the blog we suggest alternate payment methods if possible. We also recommend if purchasing L$ through 3rd parties that it be done with known, reliable sources. Read the fine print on auction sites as they often do not cover virtual goods if the transaction were to go awry.

Cheers

Jill
