Welcome yes it is bit overwhelming and not always sure what to do myself.
I did find a very social and lifely camping place so when I am not building or other things I can have little bit of fun and make few L for display rentals, advertising, uploads, photos when I spent all my spare first life money on tier and land.
I just joined in November and I am still struggling. I practice and read, practice and read more and sometimes I still don't get it and it overwhelming.
I don't make much money from my shops, I consider them more display spaces like a 3d website.
People who seem to buy from me more often are my friends who have few spare lindens.
For me SL is neccessarily about making money at this point but sharing the things I have created and I would be content L wise if I didn't have to pay so much out of my pocket to play sometime in the future.
I am artist, writer, dreamer and sometimes its hit and miss I don't always produce the product I want in first life.
I even attempted few times to have my own business, didn't work out due to health and personal reasons but it always been a dream of mine.
Same goes with Second Life, especially when it comes to second life.
Persistance and Practice.
I figure eventually it work itself out.
I still get really stuck sometimes but I have more people who look forward to seeing me in my 2nd life then I had 3 months ago.

Good News! I built my first chair! Haha I was so happy I made it! I also invested in the second life guide that I found at Borders. Gunna go give that a read for a general idea to help me out then I'll be off to Ivory Tower Library to read up some more. Thanks for all the help, seems to be a really great community! =)

I gave up for now because I got frustrated that I couldn't even make a simple table. I'll probably try again later and hopefully I can find some basic building classes to help me get started.

No problem, you may get it later, perhaps by practicing modding other peoples stuff, some stuff in unmoddable of course, but many freebies are modable. It's taken me 4 months to get to the stage to confidently build a house. but now I have I reckon, it's sellable, for something anyway, when I reach 90% happy with it :)

Money Trees are better then camping

I'd recommend you spend some time hopping around to the money trees. You'll earn a few Lindens along the way but more importantly you'll visit lots and lots of places. I tended to have a good look around each tree and get a feel for the places around it. Found some cool places I might not have found otherwise and of course lots of totally forgettable strip malls. Picking money out of the trees does build up your camera control skills which comes in handy when you come to build.

There is a money tree directory - again you Search to find it. Most money trees are set to only be usable by avatars under 30 days - but you'll be bored with it before then!! But hopefully you'll have a better idea of what's out there and what to do by then.
