Hello everyone,
I'm a new player, just started today actually. I did the tutorial and explored a bit. Now what? I'm currently sitting Club Fairplay dancing to make money because I have no idea what to do. I tried building but I failed miserably. What can I do? Are there jobs or anything? Is there any type of fishing or hunting?
From a noob, Tyeral

What to do?
02-16-2007 11:05
Walk around. Find something you like. Find a group that is fun. Or activities you wish to engage in. Don't worry about money so much... believe me, camping is that last thing I'd want to do in your shoes.

Welcome to SL! For learning what you can do, you might try the Ivory Tower of Prims. They have fantastic tutorials on building things. Also, you might try the New Citizens and the Shelter. Both are great places to meet others.

In short, you can do what ever you want.
SL is very different form most other places online. There are no goals, there is no farming, there really is nothing to do that is created by the makers of SL. With that being said, there is an entire world created by the users of SL. There is everything from roman themed sims to RPG. There are race tracks, boats, and airplanes that you can move around in. You can build a skyscraper or you can make outhouse. You can become a dragon or you can become a very tiny person.
The best thing to do is just explore around. Talk to people and find out what they like to do. Basically, do what you find fun. There are games that are free to play that you can win money at. There are classes where you can learn to build, script, or make an outfit. Search for what interests you. If it doesn't exist, make it.

Hey! Nice last name? We related? LOL
Welcome..It takes a while to get adjusted and figure things out. I'd do a search under education and look for any classes being given by NCI. It's a great way to get started.
Don't think of this as a "game" like any other you've played; or your likely to be dissappointed!

Welcome, and you've definitely come to the right place! Browsing the forums is a fast way to learn a whole lot about what there is to do (and things not to do). I highly recommend spending some time here, but in small chunks to avoid information overload!
Dancing for money = the dreaded and evil 'camping' you will read rants about in some of the threads. But I suppose since you're brand new, and are still learning what else there is to do (and there's lots), it's a fine way to spend your time while you read up on the forums about the more exciting places you can go.
There are building classes you can attend; search the events tab for those. Pretty much everyone is a miserable failure at building when they first get here! There's a help wanted section in the forum for jobs but you might want to wander around a bit more and get oriented before you commit yourself to anything. I don't know about fishing and hunting, but there's not a whole lot you can't do in SL, so try searching the classified ads or places section.
Any one else have any suggestions on any specific places to go for a brand new person?

Yea, this is all quite new to me. I'm used to typical MMOs where I have to be farming and all that. I'm kinda lost still but thanks for the help!

well, First welcome to SL what are your intrest? can I ask what brought you here? if you would like to meet other people AVs that will actully talk I advise you not to do the camping pads. try looking in events in the search tab. find a live music or an contest go and be friendly and you will find people to help you, teach you etc. I recoment searcing the Ivory tower, and spending time there learning everything you can about building/creating with prims. It is the base of all here..if your a coder I would sugest working on some LLS scripting. there is fishing in Hyles at the info hub (but its just a pole and gets boring quick. The SL world has grown so much since I joined in June I don't know where to start to send you... get off the beaten path stay away from 40 green dots on the map. I found manypeople have great fun things built that cost nothing ... Like roller coasters, crasy games , all kinds of wonderful things. IM me in world I will send you some landmarks if you say what your intrest are

Yeah, me too, thats my background. As a matter of fact, I have to go harvesting some loams for my Tinkerer before tomorrow night's raid, have to make up some FD gear... After I get my SL store set up of course! Good luck!

I tried camping when I first came into SL and got bored after 15 minutes. LOL
My suggestion is not to be concerned about having money. If you have payment info on file, invest in $1000 lindens (whats that? about $4 US?) and use it for pocket change.
Now go find some clubs and mingle with other poeple. Or go exploring. There are tons of beautiful places and creative things to interact with. And just as many amazing citizens from all over the world.
I like to think of SL as the ultimate chat room/playground. do what you want....meet who you want...be what you want

Well to be honest, I saw an article on MMORPG.com about how an Art Institute set up a virtual campus in-game. I then followed the link to the SL homepage and did some reading and though I might as well try it out. I was hoping to open some type of in-game business but I'm not sure what I can do. I don't want to make things that will overflood the market, and I don't want to make stuff that will never sell. I want to find a happy median.

You tried building and failed, so you gave up? Did you expect to create a masterpiece right off? This is a disturbing trend i see all too frequently in RL, especially with my students. Giving up on something at the first sign of difficulty, being afraid to experience failure.I've looked at building a little bit so far, and it will take same time to getthe hang of. Stick to it....

I gave up for now because I got frustrated that I couldn't even make a simple table. I'll probably try again later and hopefully I can find some basic building classes to help me get started.

Tyrel again do a search for "Ivory Tower" it is a great place to learn to build all at your own pace.
the building classes are harder and harder to find as many only did it for a stipend that they no longer give

From: Tyeral Fredriksson Is there any type of fishing or hunting? My friends and I are going to be setting these up at our lake soon, but right now there's a great fishing game available called Neo Realms.

As others have mentioned, the Ivory Tower of Primitives has some great self paced tutorials on building. You could far worse than giving it a try. I wished I'd gone there before I'd tried to build my house

Hit the F1 key on your keyboard after you login and read through a few articles....there is a lot of helpful content there.
Find an SL Mentor to show you around, or show you how to make that table after you have spent some time in the Ivory Tower.
Visit the junkyard, pick up some freebies. Then visit a sandobx and take the freebies apart to see how others make stuff.

Think of playing in SL much like visiting another country on a vacation. It's a place to explore, ot meet and interact with new people, and to do and be what might well be impossible in Real Life - Like being an anthro wolf, or experiencing being the opposite gender, or being able to fly...
Also look for Robin Sojurner's texturing tutorial. Search for her name in the People tab in Search, and look for a link in her Picks section of her profile. Great info on basic and advanced texturing skills.
Welcome to SL!

There are other things than building
02-16-2007 16:07
Hi Tyeral, and welcome.
First of all, relax. There's no rush. It's going to take a little time to get used to this place so take your time.
OK I'm vain, I admit it, but I spent my first few days messing with my appearance, getting some clothes, hair and stuff, and generally making myself how I wanted to be. Then I went out and simply talked to people, made some friends, and found out from them what sort of stuff there was to do. IMHO friends are the best thing about SL, you can't get enough of them.
Then I found somewhere to live. This might sound silly to you at the moment, I mean why do you need somewhere to live in SL? Well you don't, but for me it's the best thing I've done so far. It's really helped me to feel I "belong". Personally I have no interest in owning land (I'm European, not American) so I rent, which is much cheaper.
Finally, I started to learn a skill. Building isn't all you can do. Texturing, clothes designing, scripting, animating are all very different skills, and I'm sure there will be something to suit you. Personally, after designing a few clothes, I've moved into animating. I'm building up a small business which is covering all my overheads (including my house) and is just great fun to do. I still have lots of time for friends, and SL just keeps getting better.
So there it is. Take the pressure off, relax and take your time. One more thing, tiny steps, T, tiny steps.
Love Suzi

My problem upon entering SL a couple of years ago wasn't so much "What do i do?" as it was "What do i do FIRST?" Your SL experiences will be Limited Only by your Imagination, so take a Little bit of time and ask yourself "If i could do anything, What would i want to do most". Some people think in terms of Making Money, Others indulge thier creative side. Some have developed new sports, or resurected old games. A Lot have created historical, or Fantasy environments for themselves, and others join groups to enjoy what others have created.
My suggestion, Type Keywords for things that interest you into "Places Search", and see what is out there, Or just walk the Map and see what people have done already.
Angel.

You should listen to the Voice in the Head above = LOL! Stick around you will get the hang of it, and to quote a cliché - Rome wasn't built in a day! As for the table you were trying to build - the I want it now impulse in all of us says: don't waste time trying to build a table = totally discouraging; and no wonder ur bored. **Go out exploring and gather ye FREE STUFF!! Once you have some inventory to work with u can put it all to gather and create an outpost for yourself. The real fun in SL is in * jumping in* and creating a persona, friends, attending events and spending time learning... how to spend your time. Wishing u the best / don't give up / and welcome to SL dammit!
