The Lindens can't predict what may or may not happen while in the process of working on the main grid. If anyone can help them to predict the future I'm sure they'd be happy to hire them.

There's been times when they've completed their work early. And they've gotten better about keeping us informed as to how the work is coming along via blog posts.

They are still trying to figure out where the electricity comes from to keep the grid up. Someone remove the protective child covers from the sockets.

Well sorry if this comes across as rude, but since you couldn't be bothered to look back at previous updates I will help you out.

I deciphered your question and it seems you are asking why the lindens don't start doing updates/maintanence at 4AM SL time. Well, as has been discussed in other threads on this very same question SL time is the time zone of the main Linden Labs office. Thier main contingent of employees work in this office and the office hours start at 8AM so that is when they do thier work (mainly). Now there is suggestion that they can work remotely on software upgrades etc....but the work they are doing today has to do with power, so therefore they actually have to be physically there.

Also, you, like so many before you state they are never ready on time. Well first, that is untrue as I have seen several times where they were completed before the scheduled time. Yes I know more often they are late, but don't say always. I am not giving LL the big rah-rah but I hate when people have to rehash stuff that has already been discussed over and over and over. If you were adding something new or asking a NEW question I would be fine with it....but your post is absolutely nothing new and comes across as another resident trying to start a big old LL bashing on an old subject.

In just short of 3 years of my time on SL, after down time the grid has NEVER once been back at the stated time. I wish they would add on 30 minutes and surprise us all :)

No matter what time they start, it's gonna be someone's prime time , somehwere in the world. We all can survive a few hours off line.......

maybe because in the US the work day begins at 6 am?
maybe because they are on PST?
maybe because they can?

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

If Linden Lab wants a little slack...just inform everyone that "the grid will be back in couple of months...and everything will fixed."

As pointed out elsewhere, no matter what time they pick to shut down, it will inconvenience somebody somewhere. Believe it or not, theLinden people are real human beings who have families and real lives, just like we do. For example, if someone has children in school, imagine the inconvenience of arranging for your child to get to school if you suddenly have to leave your home at 3:00 a.m. to get to work by 4:00 a.m. to do the grid maintenence. I am guessing that keeping the grid mtc duringnormal business hours for their time zone is a "family friendly" policy and I, for one, am cooprating with it. Of course, I aminthe same time zone, so I am at work anyway when they are grid banging.

(whistle)
Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you
I'm still alright to smile
Grid, I think about you every day now
Was a time when I wasn't sure
But you set my mind at ease
There is no doubt
You're in my heart now

Said, Lindens, take it slow
It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
Said, Phillip, make it slow
And we come together fine
All we need is just a little patience
(patience)
Mm, yeah

I sit here on the stairs
'Cause I'd rather be alone
If I can't have you right now
I'll wait, dear
Sometimes I get so tense
But I can't speed up the time
But you know, love
There's one more thing to consider

Said, Phillip, take it slow
And things will be just fine
You and I'll just use a little patience
Said, Lindens, take the time
'Cause the lights are shining bright
You and I've got what it takes
To make it, We won't fake it,
I'll never break it
'cause I can't take it

(whistle)
...little patience, mm yeah, mm yeah
need a little patience, yeah
just a little patience, yeah
some more patience, yeah
need some patience, yeah
could use some patience, yeah
gotta have some patience, yeah
all it takes is patience,
just a little patience
is all you need *

I BEEN WALKIN' THE STREETS AT NIGHT
JUST TRYIN' TO GET IT RIGHT
HARD TO SEE WITH SO MANY AROUND
YOU KNOW I DON'T LIKE
BEING STUCK IN THE CROWD

There's also the fact that there are most likely situations during this maintanence work where there are parties external to Linden Lab involved. Today, for instance, it was mentioned that additional bandwidth was being provisioned at the Dallas facility. This involves an ISP, as well as probably the local telecom company. Electrical work often involves electrical contractors and electricians. Server hardware issues might involve hardware manufacturers/vendors. If the version of Linux used on the servers is a commercial version, they may at times need support from the vendor.

They may not use all these external resources each and every time, but surely it makes sense to schedule such work at a time when they know these resources will be available. This is particularly critical when work is being done remotely between SFO and Dallas.

(Why must people keep beating this dead horse?)

Why should they have to?

If that is what it takes to serve your customers, then you do it. When I was in sales, many times I started at 4 am to meet store managment when they could see me. When I was in construction, 4 am was prime starting time, you beat the heat of the late afternoon.

With a world wide game, I realize that some people are going to be unhappy with scheduled downtime, but your "Oh the poor dears can't get out of bed that early" arguement doesn't hold water in the real world.

Has no-one in the US heard of shifts? I work for a technology organisation in Germany, and we provide a 24-hour service to our customers around the world. BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE DO, we cover the 24 hour period by using a shift system, so ALL of our customers get an EQUAL service.

LL needs to decide if they are providing a global service to a global customer base, or a 9-5 service to a local customer base.

Ever tried getting high tech parts locally at 2am? And if your staff who write the new code are on dayshift then thats the shift you should be implementing it so they can test it themselves and be there to be involved first hand with any problems.
And seeing the off peak numbers are getting pretty high too now whats the difference? If you can't miss 4 hours, then you need help, and if you have business concerns it's ok because the oppsition and customers are all locked out too, you're not loosing money.
Do your customers truely get Equal service or is it just Skeleton service? Equal service would mean your accounts people and mangement are also processing and available at 2am.

I really don't think anyone has enough conclusive information to go on as far as the logistics of these updates is concerned.

If you're dissatisfied with LL's service then you are free to cancel your account and go elsewhere. It's not like this process is a sudden surprize to anyone.

2am? No problem, we go to our store. Because we take service seriously we have all critical spares in store, and to my knowledge, in 5 years, we have never suspended service for lack of spares, that would be amateurish.

We do not run a 'skeleton service' either. All shift teams are full, and accounts are handled by a 24/7 call centre.

I am close to retirement now, and I have worked extensively in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, and I have NEVER seen an operation that aspires to be global operate the way that LL does. Maybe that is the norm in the US, I cannot say, but it is not the norm elsewhere, not in my experience at least.
