Promotions to try to get more people to join once Peak Online usage drops to 20,000 and Logged on in the last month drops to under 1 million.

The next "big" thing will be voice.

Coinciding with the general release of sculpted prims into the main client, Torley's in-world office will be full of delicious watermelons.

The next next "big" thing, happening no sooner than Q1 08, will be the Open Source Server.

He already mentioned Voice in the OP , though of course you are both right - it will be a big change.


You could be right about the Open Source though - thats a pretty huge change. It will sure massively increase how many people become involved.

It seems it will make this age verification system moot though? If its someone's own server wont they have their own rules?

Though I suppose they could still use the verification status if they wish.

Crossin between SIMS is definitely something that needs major attention. There are probably a lot of things that need to be fixed, but nothing pisses me off more than when I float into ground when I cross between sims.

I don't think it will be quite like that. They won't release the entire infrastructure into open source, just the simulator code. Operators will have the option of running standalone, with a basic asset system and user directory - "the new black" for corporate conferencing, training, etc.

There will be a subscription fee to connect to the Second Life grid, however, for access to the L$ economy, global asset store, user directory, etc. Grid connected operators will be subject to the Second Life terms of service and community standards, and will comply with Linden Lab's age/identity verification policy.

"Second Life" is not a good name for the Web 3.0.

if that happens, i would happily buy a new computer to host a personal sim and upgrade my current ADSL2+ package to an Annex M (2.5Mbps upstream) pro package. but would 2.5Mbps be enough? given the bandwidth consumed when i teleport to a sim personally, i'm not so sure it would suffice for a popular sim.

I think land limit cut will be the next thing thats not curently known that LL is preparing to do. Soon maybe no land will be allowed to be cut under say 256

Space and 0 gravity once you get above 1000m altitude. Maybe a fun little effect when you re-enter SL's "atmosphere", too!
