From: Zack Massiel MSSQL 2005 express would be a better choice imo. Wow! I never, ever, thought I'd hear someone recommend MSSQL Express to handle three-plus terrabytes worth of data. That actually brought a tear to my eye, and I had to explain to my wife why I was sitting on the other side of the room laughing so hard! Don't get my wrong, I think Express is absolutely wonderful for certain small-scale projects, but... No. Just... No. You couldn't ever hope to use it for SL .

Indeed especially as it would require downgrading from Linux to Windows for the servers.

what's responsible for the "object missing from database" error i get when trying to wear/attach things? i see them in my inventory, i can read their properties, am i just imagining i still own things? is the database referred to the infamous MySQL database? will stick to Mature sims today, since i can't put any clothes on

From: Breeze Winnfield It was a good run and its sad that few if any of the new 20 or so virtual worlds out or coming out by the end of the year will have the content creation scope of sl. The corpse is beginning to smell and all the LL perfume spin isnt going to cover it up for long. Its a shame LL never really managed to execute on the promise SL had. We wont see any virtual world with its possibilities again soon. Cue the violins. No, they don't need to rehearse. It's a familiar tune.

Problems with database access can (and frequently do) result from issues having nothing to do with the database itself. MySQL is a robust, mature database. The likelihood of something major suddenly going wrong with software that has been working beautifully for so long is VERY remote. More likely the problem is something recently introduced into the grid that has gotten a lot of use. My vote is voice. Voice takes a lot of bandwidth and a lot of processing power, not to mention RAM. This, on top of a bandwidth and processor hog like SL, is more likely to cause a digital tummyache than MySQL suddenly getting amnesia. In other words, if SL can't get to the database servers because all the Voice stuff is getting in the way, you will end up getting "object missing from database" errors (or worse). (That is, until Linden Labs installs more servers to handle the load.)

Postgres might be a better choice than MySQL with regard to transactions.
Postgres won't timeout like MySQL can and will...and it seems that MySQL has some trouble with concurrency in select/update/insert although it can't be beaten for select only requests.
Google uses MySQL.
