Has anyone "done" Route 8?

I'm a bit taken at the moment with the phenomenon which is Route 8. Is there anyone out there who has walked, run or driven its length? And can anyone tell me how long it is? Please??

Just be prepared to rubber-band lag and possibly wind up in the drink or underground every time you cross a sim boundary...

I have but I can't remember offhand how long it is in time to travel. I have links for both ends and maps (free) in my Explorers Information Centres in case you need them. There is a LM box for the centres here: http://slapt.me/market/index.php?act=market&id_item=5399

I have a script I made where you can log the sims you pass through and list/add them up at the end. Some time this year I will go through all of the mainland routes and get myself some lists to share and for reference, but for now I can't answer your question and I think it will be a long time until I take readings along and work out all of the distances and are able to give you a figure in kilometers (which I will do for all of the routes one day).

I am interested to know myself now though....hmmm...I feel a drive coming on...

This may be out of date or wholly redundant with other information, and is bound to screw-up formatting for the rest of this page--sorry 'bout that--but in case it's of any interest:

That's the one I have at my centres and to my knowledge it is quite correct. It was seeing those mole maps which started me making maps for the mainlands/areas which didn't have any :) I have edited a couple of theirs too, because some had bits missing, like the Jeogeot one. You can also find some of them on my website: http://www.greenlaners.com/

I use them for my desktop pic when I'm exploring :)

I've given up trying to drive it now, as the grid is being a pain in the ass to me...usual weekend nonsense I guess, though I keep having the same problem in the same crossings, so I'm beginning to thing there is something else to it. I'll do it on monday and post the results here. I don't think it's the longest route though. Jeogeot has a huge loop, but I'm not sure if they have finished all of the roads yet.

Possibly this resized image will suffice and if so the Yevad could delete the image that disturbs the forum formatting.

Every time I see this thread titled, with the word 'done' in quotes, I can't help but think that we are talking about bumping pixels -- that is just the only way I've ever seen the word 'done' have emphasis.

I have driven every meter of those roads, although not in one sitting. I don't have any real data on how long Rt. 8 might take you, sorry. As a guess - if you wear a very low-ARC avatar and drive a simple vehicle to help smooth region crossing sit seems like you ought to be able to do it in *well* under 2 hours.

Those roads are relatively straight level and smooth. They are much easier to drive than roads on other continents, conversely therefore less scenic or challenging. I have fewer problems with region crossings there than I do on Heterocera, especially the atoll.

p.s. lurbs maps; just seeing the route makes it seem like a pleasing fun drive... or maybe a walk would be safer. :)

It took a while for me to understand what you meant because nothing has upset the forum format for me (its truncated), but I think I know what you mean...but I was quoting someone else, so you need to ask them too :)

Qie, that 2nd link, the one to the LL wiki image is too long for some browsers it seems.

I think it's more than that tonight...I often travel huge distances and have even gone from the east side of Geata V to the southern tip of Satori by plane in one sitting before. I tried all manner of vehicles, all low use and usually OK, but it was terrible. Yeah, Satori is usually pretty good from what I remember, but I find the roads a bit boring so I don't drive them often. Snowlands is my playground usually lol.

I'm sure it would be less than 2 hours too, I can cross the main SLRR loop in 23mins at a leisurely pace, so it might even be around an hour looking at their relative size.

I used to *fly* these routes, in my Moewe. One of the reasons it's so reliable at low altitude is so I could do that - it switches between aircraft and semi-hovercraft mode depending on altitude, but keeping the same control model. But in the past year sim crossings haven't been reliable enough to fly nap-of-the-land.

I've done that one in my Soap Boxer. Great run! I did have to mod mine to make it fast enough to do that bridge jump, though.

I did route 8 a few times but a while ago. It was a wonderful time. I did it by balloon and by flying dragonfly. The sim lines can be really really wicked but what a wonderful way to see the Satori continent. We would disembark and explore the sides of the roads when we saw great builds. Very few ban lines when we did it but there were some which was annoying. Definitely recommend for those boring rainy days when you can't think of what else to do.

I like the train ride (is it still there?) on the Old Continent too.

Oops.

Some folks get disturbed when things don't fit right. I can deal with it.

There's the trolly ride through the snow sims:

That's still there. Was there another one that you saw?

DPW: Look at the scribbling, unfinished mess you have accomplished from 2002 to 2010. Come on already. I know the philosophy under Philip's reign was for employees to choose projects they wanted to work on - but it also should be mandated that they stay on them until they actually complete them - the Railroad, waterways, roads - notice a pattern?

Although I'm the first to agree that LL would be better served by some attention to project management such that things get completed before resources drift off to the next shiny thing, the nature of the Route 8 map wasn't LDPW's doing. It's explained:
From: LDPW's wiki page
Originally the roads were supposed to connect, but due to mistakes when the land was divided as the regions were brought online many of the routes end in abrupt dead ends.
And I'm inclined to believe that: even on Heterocera there are weird dead-ends and places where land clearly intended for infrastructure was erroneously parcelled and sold when the continent was new. It's an ongoing effort to acquire some of that land after the fact and make it available for LDPW to fix what was broken in the haste to sell off fresh sims.

I'm very glad that Michael and LDPW are again focusing on completing some of this stuff. Heterocera in particular still has many miles of unpaved paths and gaping chasms where bridges are needed. I think it must be a fun time again to be a Mole, after the high-pressure Zindra and Linden Homes distractions are out of the way. (I know, I know: Don't get me started on the mess in Zindra.)

Yes, the land on Heterocera between Spini and Jubata (the so-called Spini Gap) was in private hands. After successful negotiations, LL acquired the land and finished the railroad tracks there in February, 2009. LL even mounted a sign thanking the previous owner for relinquishing the land.

I wonder if Michael will post another poll asking residents to help prioritize among the infrastructure projects to be done?

Lots is going on right now. Jeogeot and Corsica have been getting new roads and the SLRR has some major additions going in. I have never seen so much being done by moles before and although I prefer naked routes to driving on prims, I can definitely see how it benifits the majority. I personally find prims very boring to drive on...10m of flat, joint, 10m of flat, joint...yawn.

From what I understand, the Heterocera routes which aren't going to be used for the SLRR will be left without prims, as LL recognises that not everyone wants to drive/walk/ride on prims, much as they have left a load of trails at Snowlands. This kinda driving is much more fun if you ask me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZOoPWmbxL4

Ya, glad to see a good variety to it all, from the flat prim roads, to the "off road" paths you favor, to even things like the great wall or that new chunk of elevated footpath along a chunk of (I believe) Route 11.

Really pleased to see the mount of activity going on. Something like 5 routes getting some building on them right now, including a ton of rail work (that junction at Crumbi is massive). Bay City is getting its street signs, too, the Blake Sea ferry is sunder operation, and Oak Grove and some of the open spaces to the east there are intended to be getting some love.
