Burnt-out ad farms - a forgotten phenomenon?

We hear a lot of discussion about carving up land into 16m plots which become ad farms. We are used to the full-on bright textures of dozens of rotating signs, balls and whatever, many merely advertising that the tiny plot beneath them is for sale.

These are what might be described as ad farms in their prime, but what happens as they age and wither. My house is next to one of these burnt out ad farms - just a small one. What's there is a mixture. There are a few plots still with ads that have been there for months. Me and my neighbour bought up all the plots that were reasonably priced and they serve us as prim land, while the residue consists of plots that are either not for sale or for sale at ridiculously high prices. Some of these plots are littered with those horrid money pyramids left by others.

It seems that such burnt out ad farms have reached a stalemate situation. No one is able to buy the land and the owners have have forgotten about it or imagine it will one day sell for L$ 99,999!

These burnt out ad farms are most likely abandoned accounts. People who thought that SL would make them enough quick and easy cash to retire and never work again. In other words, delusional idiots. :D

And the land will probably revert to ol Guv' Linden's hands before too long, once the premium time runs out. I find this happening a lot with those who pay for a full year, thinking it's a great deal, but get bored at around six months...

Those plots must be a real headache to the Lindens. They can't really put up some odd 16sqm plot for auction very easily.

I'd buy a few of them if I could. Fill up my tier and drop little bushes or trees on them....just to try and "beautify" them a little.

It seems to me that Linden ought to bring in a ruling that if you own land and don't activate/visit your land within a certain time period (6 month to a year) you by default relinquish ownership. In other words..don't log on and visit..then lose it. I suspect this would remove a few ad farms..but sadly not all by any means.

They don't auction them. I believe they set them for sale incredibly cheap and land bots get them and put them back into circulation.

I wonder if there is an SL group that goes around to local sims and buys them off so they can plant tree's on em and give the Sim a better look.

If not....you wanna start one? I wouldn't mind joining.

Would we all chip in to purchase the plots or would they be individually owned?

If group owned...the same music stream on all the plots? Or no music? Because I have a nice sounds of nature type stream the missus and I use at the house.

What would we call them? "A tree"? "A bush"? "An Anti-Ad Farm"?

I've always wanted to be a land owner.

Probably not as Linden Lab's largest source of revenue is tier fees. It's unlikely they'd seize land to place it into the auction queue while the resident that owns the land is perfectly happy to continue paying tier fees on it. It also interferes with the parcelholder's right to say No to any offer on their land.

Em... I don't know you so I don't know if you're new and don't know, or were making a bit of an ironic joke; but there *is* already such a group, called the Arbor Project. Please feel free to join!

while sl "nature" is somewhat appealing i also have horrible memory's of A's gang of storm troopers coming into my sim and plastering the entire thing (including my parcel) with trees via a goo script ... now if i dare biuld on my land i have to debug off the stupid things becuase the density is so great it chokes my system (and it can handle an extreme amount of crap in sl before choking) and having to go out of my way to keep limbs from entering my biulding on my property (cypress trees a plenty)

so while trees may be more pretty to look at, they do pose alot of the same problems if improperly done

please keep that in mind

What should happens that land which has been on sale for 6 months and not sold should automatically reduce in price to 10L$ per sq m.

If the tree limbs are coming over onto your property, AR it. Trees are supposed to stay on their own property and not yours. Had a person do that to cover those stupid ads too, but it made matters worse for the legit businesses in the area, because the trees were hitting our properties and blocking them.

Irony is that the trees became as big a nuisance as the ads.

Actualy, most of those pltos are covered under the "Tier free" 512m associated with the Premium, or the 1024m that used to come with the Lifetime (Though I really doubt Lifetime or Charter member accounts are wasting their time with this BS).

I'd be willing to bet that LL would make more money by reclaiming the land, getting the money for auctioning it of, and then collecting tier from the new owners. (Yes, some will just be bought by Ad Farmers again, but some will be snapped up by landowners tired of the stupid ads).

Why they don't is two-fold, imo:
1) LL has a "policy" of not reclaiming land in ~hopes~ that the owner will come back to SL. Of course, I feel they could get people to come back (or stay) more often by taking action on things like this instead.

2) LL doesn't have the manpower to deal with all the thousands of plots like this throughout SL. One Linden could do it, but would be a full time job and would take weeks/months to even begin to get a hold on it (Never catch up as there will always be more, but it could reach a point of handibility).

I would totally volunteer to do that for the Lindens. They wouldn't even have to pay me; just let me spend a couple of hours a week doing it. I'm sure that there are others out there who would. Oh well. It'll never happen.

Again, plots of this size are not auctioned. Pretty sure they are set for L$1 for land bots to grab (At one point in time, they were fair game to anyone). So if the landowners decide to buy them, they will be paying the land bot runner what he sets the plot for once it's claimed.

Um, everywhere. TP to the sim of Nove and have a look around for an example. Turn property lines on in view to get a better idea of how they are sliced up.

Do a search in land sales and sort by mainland. You will see thousands for sale.
