Fortunately most people building interesting things in SL actually want them to be seen, and aren't as obnoxious as Vassar.

I don't know why, but sims like Templum Obscurum and such are usually empty.
You can even rezz objects there. Which is handy because the sim doesn't have much furniture, bring your own. :P

I'm always copying these great lists of recommendations for sightseeing, but often when I type the name in Search (Places) they can't be found. I just tried to find some suggested in this thread: Paper, Greenhouse and Welsh Lakes and it couldn't find any of them. Instead I got long lists of other places, some of which didn't even have those words in their name. It's so frustrating.

Most of the names posted here are either SLURLS or sim map names.
Go to map and search there for the name. you'll be taken to the sim's default landingpoint.

Try Search All instead of places.

I don't know why they show up in all instead of places, but they do.

I didn't go to Search (All) for those three places, but I have looked there on other occasions, only to find that if the place I want is listed, there is still no teleport available. There may be co-ordinates, but I have to admit I'm hopeless with the map.

To get to a sim by name, open the map, enter the sim name in the search box on the right side below the landmarks pulldown, and click the search button next to it, and wait.

Just to provide an easier way to find two of the places named already in this thread that I am connected with (in the interests of full disclosure ;-) )

Hosoi Ichiba is, actually, a commercial venture, but it is limited to a walled Market in one corner of the "Japan Kanto" sim - there are lots of gardens and quiet areas for meditation outside the walls, if you don't want the commercial side of things.

The Great Wall of China (at least the one I know about) is on the sim called "Mao". It is for sale (should anybody have a spare sim sitting around), but was built more for the exercise of doing it than anything.

Lake Gnoma is nothing special in my eyes, although occasionally I get IM's from people saying they love it. It is just landscape with a lake and some builds for decoration.
The purpose of this land has always been for people to relax and enjoy themselves.

If you want the things that can be used at Gnoma for yourself it is possible to buy them in the old trading post, or from the land. But, if you are happy just using them at Gnoma that's fine by me too. I have no commercial goals.

About your signature: a rommelig bureau can be because somebody spends so much time in SL that there is no time to tidy it. A leeg bureau could be because somebody does not spend enough time in SL.

Lot of reflections gone

Eek! not only has the Gabriel Guyer guide to nice places gone, but the first place that comes to mind, Secret Reflections seems to have gone, the old landmark landing me at a Hobbit ferry of all things!
Well, at least Svarga is still in existence!

Seems like a lot of the reflections places are gone.

hiya...

rezzable has just started the process of building a directory of noteworthy SL sims that gives you the opportunity to teleport directly from the webpage.

the list can be found on rezzable's website, here:

http://rezzable.com/vwdirectory/

right now there are a few of us testing the hud and checking out sims- I'll be keeping my eye on threads like this to scout out new entries... I've used some of your suggestions, already!
thanks!
