Group notice sent out to Surreal group - which allows one to use a large sandbox:

There are bots in second life not only searching for land to buy, but they also scan parcels for permissions. They check, if all residents can build on these parcels and if they have auto-return off. To prevent those reported parcels to be littered with prims, it's recommended to disallow "Create Objects" for at least "All Residents". This prevents direct building on your land by everyone but yourself and group members. If you need help with securing your parcel or you have any questions, IM me, thanks

. sent by Thomas Shikani, Surreal 11 July '07

While such a bot could hbe put to innocent use by someone needing a place to build, the main use of this seems to be griefers intent on filling sims with prim litter, which is why the proprietor of a sandbox felt the need to warn people. The griefer generates hundreds or thousands of objects, which may be but don't have to be inherently offensive, until the prim quota for the parcel is filled up and the parcel is unusable for building purposes.

I see two problems with bots:

1. They can be put to malevolent use, and it appears the malefactors are busier with them than are normal folks.

2. The creators of bots seem to be quite irresponsible about the malevolent uses to which they can be put.

Modest proposal: Ban malefactors!

I know it would be wildly unpopular, but I think CC verification is a GOOD thing, in terms of being able to put an end to a great deal of this kind of nonsense. I should imagine someone would think at least twice before griefing in this manner, if LL simply enacted a tier of fines for verified bad behavior...and that should include people who willfully create and distribute such malbots.
I hate griefers with the red-hot passion of a million blazing suns...and while I recognize its impossible to get rid of them ALL...it sure would be nice to make at least a few of them HURT - and badly.
Any other ideas?

There's a recent thread that's a good illustration of that: /128/fc/195005/1.html

Not entirely obvious, but "flags" in the collected data has the build/no build, etc options raised by the OP.

I vote for "PoopBot" or "SquatBot"

PoopBot because of leaving waste on other people's lawn

SquatBot because of the term "squatting"...people living on land that isn't their's without the owner's knowledge.

I second the nomination of SquatBot.

It's descriptive and ugly sounding.

Maybe it should be called newbie-bot cause it rezzes prims on your land if you allow objects.

Well, in order to be a true Newbie-bot, it would have to complain about you returning its stuff from your land :p

So why didn't he just give the name of the bot? There are legitimate reasons to leave build on, and it would be easier to just ban the bot, if it exists. This one seems unlikely, there's no real motivation for anyone to create it.

Look at the thread I referred to a few posts up.

My problem with it was that it provides a name to parcel(s) lookup, but the bot also collects all parcel flags so someone could use it to get all parcels with build enabled as well.

You can leave "Create Objects" enabled, if you simply restrict the parcel access to verified residents ("payment info on file" and "payment info used";). As a shop owner, you'll only lose about 5% of your revenue (unless you sell weapons and caging devices).

Sorry I completely misunderstood, I thought it was a bot that looked for land then dropped prims all over it. lol guess I shouldn't read the forums before my morning coffee.

Optimistic view: if enough of these malbots keep cropping up and making problems perhaps LL will finally get the message that bots need to be banned - all of them.

ANY parcel left without auto-return will eventually fill up with projectiles, crashed vehicles, newbie scrap.

If an irresponsible land owner can't be bothered to set auto-return... or check on the contents of their land from time to time... it's FAR better that the parcel get filled up with inert (non-scripted) prims to prevent someone from dumping some sort of scripted lag-beast.

There's no stopping irresponsible land owners from neglecting their land, it's theirs to neglect as they like.

That's certainly overkill, and completely unnecessary. Why should all bots be banned just cause some jackasses create bots that are bad? Not all bots are evil, not all bots are a strain on the server, not all bots deserve to be banned.
