I've had a cute noob ask me to help with his look... and I would like to help... grins. But I realized that the places I know don't have the best looking avies for guys... they look too girlie ... giggles ... Soooo what is your favorite place for male skins?

thank you!

..and I did search... lol

I've taken several male friends to Tami McCoy for hair, and they've been very pleased with her selection and quality.

Tami McCoy is the best I have found for hair. Especially if you want something other than the club punk look. She has some normal styles.

For skins, I like By Max.

One thing to remember is a skin will look different on different shapes. Buy demos before you get the real thing.

Tami is good for male hair but her look is being over-used. There are others.

::MAX:: was once the only game in town when it came to decent male skins, even so far as having Xcite! textures. That's no longer true.

Ask the prettiest, most beautiful female where she got her skin, shape, hair, and clothes and she may have a convenient memory lapse.

Ask me where I got what makes *me* who I am in SL and the same thing might happen. ;)

Naughty offers by far the best hairs for males, IMO. Their skin though, it's just good. I've found my best skins at the freebie warehouse, incredible but true. They're practically photographic quality.

Gray's Anatomy , new store opened at the Rickety Old Boardwalk in Goun. Fraid I don't have a slurl handy but it's a fairly new store and the owner is just getting started up. Worth a look. It's focused on male avvies.. skin, eyes, hair.

Don't do hair.

Have a skin I like by Nomine. But the one I usually wear is by a designer that starts with an A, though I really can't remember. (and not just a convenient memory lapse, at my age they come often enough on their own)

Took many days of searching and lot's of demo skins to get there. And tastes are very personal, find one that looks like it might do the trick and get the demo, and keep looking.

I can't imagine why you didn't get plenty of good answers via search. But in any event:

The best resource is http://second-man.com, which reviews hair, skins, clothing, and accessories for men. There's a ton of information there, including pictures that help streamline the shopping experience.

Skins are incredibly personal, so there's really no one answer. Some people like photo-realistic skins, some hate them. Some guys want to look muscle-bound, some settle for buff, some lean, some average. Skin tone varies, and not all skins work with all hair colors. Facial appearance, with or without hair, can be highly dependent upon the head shape and the image you want to convey.

Hair is a bit less troublesome, perhaps because there are fewer variables or fewer details. There's still a matter of personal preference, but within a particular type of hair style, I find it difficult to say that one designer is better or worse than another. I'll look more at color choices and price. Particular styles can have a dramatic effect. I've seen some hairstyles that alone change the apparent age of the avatar. Personally, I've been happy with Mystikal hair.

For both hair and skin, try on demos. I can't emphasize this enough.

Another vote for Tami McCoy for hair (Poison is really cool).

Million Dollar Skin Labs for skin - very nicely done and not terribly expensive.

Wonderfully thoughtful post.

FWIW, I follow your suggested link to second-man almost daily as well as several others (including SL-Men) dedicated (poorly) to men's fashions. many of them use that gay model with eye make-up.

When I say "This is a girls game . . ."

• It is not because I am a newbie, noob, or any other inexperienced moniker.
• It is not because I don't know where the men's fashion blogs are
• It is not because I don't have plenty of Lindens for stuff
• It is not because I need freebies
• It is not because I don't know how to use search

It is because for every 100 girl's tops in SL, there is one goddam male shirt---if you're lucky.

. . . and like I said time and time again, SL, (Second Life, 2nd Life) is a f*cking **girl's** game, plain and simple. Notice how I cleverly resisted all-caps. ;)

I like the Cake skins for men. Although they too are overused. If you prefer a smoother more angelic less roughened skin, try the Renovar skins at Draconic kiss. They are not girly but they are...hmmm smoother, and they aren't muscle bound men from mars either.

That all depends on what kind of skin and hair you are looking for... you kind find lots of places with quality, just in different styles.
I personally shop at Aitui.

Go look in your wife's/GF's/sister's/ random female you are stalking's closet. You will find 700 different tops. Go look in your closet. 7 shirts, 3 of which are the same style just different colors. :)

Why should SL be that much different than RL?

"Stalking?"

Can you be a tad less sarcastic next time please when quoting my posts?

That uncalled-for arrogance aside, you're correct.

Ah yes, Aitui---the ones selling men's skins in full eye make-up.

The nice things they *do* sell are spoiled by all the girly-boy crap.

I have to agree with this sentiment, if not the forcefulness of its delivery. There is one main style of men's stuff in SL - young, short, spiky, long bangs, and that's it until you get into roleplay type styles. It's really hard to find stuff that doesn't fall into that genre. It's out there, but you really have to scrounge around.

That said, check Virtual Creations. They don't have a large selection, but what they have is very nice. I use "Ozzy" as my main hair. They have a main shop but the one in Hairspray seems to have more men's stuff.

As for clothes, blech. You have cargo pants and jeans. That's it for pants. There is some nice formal wear and business attire, but it's just that there isn't much casual stuff. I don't want to be a fashion plate, metrosexual, or whatever the latest is. It's not me and I'm uncomfortable like that. It's frustrating. Add to that I'm not any good at picking clothes in RL, and I'm screwed.

Edit - disagree about Aitui, though. Aitui rocks. They have a little girly stuff there, but most of what they carry is awesome.

Tell me again how this is different than real life?

In general, fashion just happens to be more popular with women than men. Is this a mystery to you?

There are many nice fashions in SL for men. You really don't have to look that hard. Just use search or ask around.

Not really. Make it emit a refreshing potpourri scent and we'll be on the right track.

@ Trout: Nicely said.

@ TJ Dean: Perhaps I was a bit harsh. I own well over L$1,000 worth of Aitui shirts alone and now I see they have a "Girl's" department.

But if I may say, Aitui is the exception and I also think their girly male eye make-up sux big time. Puke.

I'm guessing offering to lend you my Dior Liquid Eyeliner would to little to cheer you up.

Amras you may see it as girly I see them as goth, everyone has their own opinion. I don't think anyone can dispute the quality of work at Aitui
