I came upon a mall thats being built on one of the sims and there I read where it said "Gay Mall." My question is why does it have to be a "gay" mall, why not just a mall?

What, are the items being sold there different then items found in other regular malls? Are the televisions, food, clothes and everything else exclusively different and only can be used only by gays?

These people bitch and complain when they're singled out. They say how they're just like everyone else and want to blend in but then they go around tagging themselves by letting everyone know what they are and showing themselves to be different then the rest of society by labeling the places they frequent or the things they do and in this case who they are.
What does sexual preference have to do with a place to shop? I don't think it has anything to do with it.

Does this make any sense? I don't know, I just don't see why they have to identify themselves to the world or put themselves in seperate instances and then wonder why they're singled out.

In this case a mall is just that, a mall. Not a gay mall or a black mall or mall for left handed people. It's a mall, that's it.

Maybe they want to specialise in content mainly for the gay community. Specialist places will attract more traffic looking for specific items.

You have gay clubs, it doesn't mean no straights are allowed in.

............ or maybe it's a 'happy' mall :D

As you suggested, it's probably because they are catering to a select population, the gay/lesbian population. *shrugs* No, I imagine you don't have to be gay to shop there, but there would be things that some souls might find offensive, such as poses and artwork that are specifically directed towards the gay/lesbian lifestyle. Better to give them prior warning to steer clear, if they are likely to be offended.

I guess it makes sense if you look at it like that.

I could see the uproar if just certain words were allowed when naming any place in SL.... would all malls simply have to be named "The Mall"? It's just one of the ever limited freedoms we have.

When *did* it change? LOL I can remember as a youngster it meant simply that. Same with fairies and queens. Why and moreover *who* decided to hijack them?

Cole, I'm sure if you really, REALLY want to know what they've got .. they'll let you in ;)

Why shouldn't they identify themselves?

People shouldn't have to "blend in" to avoid persecution. They should just be allowed to be.

What would the attitude be to a mall called the Heterosexual Mall? There would probably be a cry of outrage.

Of course you are allowed in the "gay mall" if you are strait. You probably just won't have any use for the items sold there. ;)

I do wonder what sort of items a gay mall will specialize in. One thing I am sure of is that the interior decor will be fabulous :)

Pride items;

Items that involve gay humor;

Items sold by gay merchants;

as well as normal mall stuff sold by straight merchants.

Oh come off it. "Homophobic" is just a made up word used to attack those who don't give in to the demands of the gay lobby. Hell if you break the word down it means fear of man.

"The word homo is Latin for "man", in the original sense of "human being", or "person". The word "human" itself is from Latin humanus, an adjective cognate to homo, both derived from Proto-Indo-European language dhǵhem- "earth"[1]."

Gay persons are frequently subjected to all kinds of abuse, due to their sexual orientation, when out among the general populace. Thus, many gay persons like having the option of going to a place where they feel safe to be themselves. That is the rationale for creating gay establishments. By calling the mall a gay mall, the owner is sending a message to gay persons that the owner will run the mall with particular rules to make gay persons feel safe and to keep out those elements of the general public which may be abusive toward gay persons.

Likewise, there are persons who may feel uncomfortable around certain expressions of affection between gay people, like holding hands. Those persons might wish to avoid seeing those expressions, and thus are on notice that this mall, if it's a gay mall, might be a place where there might be lots of instances of same-sex couples holding hands. That helps a person steer clear of areas in which that person might feel uncomfortable.

The idea generally is not to create a place at which a gay person can escape the rest of the world forever. It creates one social option of many available, ideally, and is not the exclusive social setting for any person. It's common for people to move between several different social groups, rather than spending time in one group exclusive to all others.

That's one possible explanation. The other possible explanation is that it just sells gay porn. That happens a lot in Second Life, just like in real life.

The word "homo" is also Greek for "same" (such as in homogeneous).

i doesnt matter what the word means broken down. stop trying to divert the focus of what i said.

why does it bother you soo much what the name of a mall is called.

if there was an afrocaribbean mall would you come on here and attack it too??

I'll add that I don't see a real good reason to criticize the original poster for asking the question. The intent of the post could be to ask a question that is actually on the poster's mind, or it could be an excuse to start a gay-bashing thread. I don't know the intent. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, though.

Further, there is no reason to expect someone who is not gay, or doesn't have close gay friends, to automatically understand why gay people might want to sometimes just have their own gay spaces. Criticizing the person isn't going to help the person understand; explaining it might.
