From: SqueezeOne Pow Yes. Mute is universal last I saw
There is the button with the picture of the cartoon talk bubbles. If you click on that you can select specific people and adjust their volumes individually. I haven't used it in the main client so I don't know 100% if it works but it worked fine on First Look!
That could probably also act as the "voice only" mute but I don't know if you have to redo it each time they leave and come back. No. You have to mute the text just as you normally would.

I haven't used voice, but I would say that people singing badly isn't really much different to people building ugly things. I mean it's about perception, personal prefence, maybe, and having an environment that encourages creativity. Someone singing to their friends may get useful feedback. The kind of feedback that smiling mums and aunts praising "Our Sandra's lovely singing" won't give.

A few years ago, before I came to SL, I looked at some voice chat sites. Most of what I heard was either foul-mouthed men who sounded drunk, drugged, inarticulate and angry talking about whose head they wanted to kick in, or music blasted out by selfish chat hoggers. I think it that a page full of 'GRRRROOOWWWLLLS' on chat for a few seconds is the lesser of two evils!
