VOICE, is this typical?

Can't use a mic. in my PC situation but listening in over the past 2 or 3 days to see if I'm missing anything. First inpression is that I'm not.

Anyway today I was listening to a group of 3 or 4 people, well trying to!
One woman had her mic. open to transmit all the time wether talking or not. This resulted in me not being to hear others at all, or those I could not being comfortable to listen to.
I sent her an IM and asked her to toggle on/off her mic. She refused and said she wanted it open all the time.
I would like an assurence that if using a mic. one does have to only have it open to transit whilst you are talking, other wise have mic. off.

If this is typical then as more people use Voice it is quickly going to become choas.

As voice grows then yes this will become an issue, we'll also have people who think it's funny to blast their music down an open mic.

Voice is a useful feature but hearing lots of other conversations is going to get irritating but this can all be part of the feedback to LL. No pun intended!

The minute that person says something or makes a sound that wasn't supposed to be heard, she will turn off open mic.

Look, people like that will be ostracized. Nobody likes being around someone who has an open mic on. You can hear them breathing, coughing, making gross body noises. At some point, people will make fun of her and she will get off that "gotta have mic on 24/7" mentality....it really is laziness. This is the way we took care of open mic people in MMOs. We make fun of them until they get the picture.

I've dealt with people that do that...I just keep explaining that they make it so other people can't be heard and crank up the intensity until they get the hint. Usually others that were keeping silent out of fear of confrontation/politeness eventually chime in and peer pressure works it's magic!

If they don't go along with it the other option is to tell them you're gonna have to mute them so you can hear others.

It's just like people that choose to sing when they're not talking...you tell them to stop so you can hear other people and have a good conversation! If they don't then they're being jerks or don't understand basic social principles!

Yes, constantly transmitting is a pet peeve of mine...unless you're in a recording studio, use headphones, and aren't a heavy breather. :)

You will find that certain people are too lazy to hold down a button when talking, and let go of that button when done talking. It interferes with their multi-tasking. I'm kidding, I don't know...

However, if you ask them to stop, and they don't...you have to ask yourself how annoying is it to you? Annoying enough to mute?

Most people are toggle on/off because they THINK it's the best way, and aren't savvy to the fact that it's annoying. Usually, I find when I tell someone WHY it's annoying, they realize their fault, and turn off toggle.

My RL GF and I went shopping last night...using voice with one another...for us, it was a blessing. We don't have trouble exploring the grid in voice. If we are surrounded by immature griefers or foreign speaking people, we go elsewhere...it's pretty easy to avoid conflict. LOL, not that foreign people are conflict...that's not what I meant at all.

:)

This type of thing was common back in the hey day of CB radios. Jerks would constanly key their mics on and off or lock them on, play like DJ's and do various other things to prevent the channel from being used.

Since CBs had a limited range (unless they were running an illegal amplifier) the CB community usually had no problem finding the person and solving the problem.

If everyone within hearing range of the person doing the equivilent thing would mute and then AR the person, perhaps, and I say perhaps because some people never learn and never cease to be jerks, they might just change their ways.

Usual disclaimer: this is only my opinion. ymmv

Ah, to have some of the same "anti-griefer tools" in SL that the old-time CB'ers had...

Like the fellows that made a game out of hunting the 'open mic jerks' mentioned above... They had a simple 'enforcement method'. Directional anteanna mounted in a van, to locate the offending broadcaster. Doubled amplifiers connected to the CB in the van. Locate the Offender, park within a block and point directional anteanna right at their anteanna. Key the mic in the van. Fry the offender's tranciever with the feedback overload. Drive away...

Such extreme measures were ususally reserved, of course, only for those jerks that repeatedly refused to follow accepted CB protocols, and who did crap like that on the emergency channel...

Possibly an Urban Legend, but a common tale among some early CB'ers of my accquaintance.

Unfortunatly mic hogs are very common now. Also i have encountered many wannabe superstars trying to live out their fantasies in SL by hogging voice to constantly perform because for whatever reason their talent has gone unnoticed in the real world.

I have been to places that were once text and now because of these "performers" you can no longer even text because all eyes must be on them, which really makes a place boring if voice isn't even working for you.

Another irritating result of voice is that in large groups it is difficult for most people to get a word in at all.

SL's Own "American Idle". I'll pass, thank you.

In the bottom right hand corner of your UI, you will see the tab for voice chat. There are two buttons on the tab. Click the left one to bring up the list of those chatting. You can then adjust the volume for each person. Mute the annoying ones.

I wish that really worked, but in group situations it really doesn't because then you must figure out who is involved in what conversation and mute others too, and they must do it to you. You will still be talking over the muted person to others that have not muted you.

If you mute someone in voice do you also mute their text?

Yes. Mute is universal last I saw

There is the button with the picture of the cartoon talk bubbles. If you click on that you can select specific people and adjust their volumes individually. I haven't used it in the main client so I don't know 100% if it works but it worked fine on First Look!

That could probably also act as the "voice only" mute but I don't know if you have to redo it each time they leave and come back.

In some cases, voice is extremely annoying, in other cases it is extremely welcomed.

LOL - although a really good Nicholas Cage impression from Vampire's Kiss would leave me hard pressed to stay out of the headphone section of Radio Shack. :)

I think I would cringe if I heard someone singing with their all trying to impress all those around them... I would be so embarrassed for them, like watching an old uncle or worse.. your dad dancing at a wedding!

I would also say something, nicely of course, but I would have to say something... through the embarrassed nervous giggles!

I would like to know where all this goes on I must add though... because on my travels around SL I never hear anyone speak let alone do a rendition that would the eyes of Simon Cowell water!
