Last night I was in a building Supply Store, when a really ugly newbie TP'ed on top of me. I moved away a bit and looked at his tag: Grazing: Grid Shepherd. He stayed a few seconds and TP'ed away. (I think he may have copped a feel) Was this the infamous ESC Automaton? I'm glad none of my clothes were marked For Sale. :p

Yes, that was the sheep's spybot, collecting info on everyone's in-world prims for ESC.

I hope to catch him, freeze him, abuse report him, then send him home and mess up their plans.

It infringes on me, I'll infringe on it.

Maybe someone else's Bot bought up all the imagination before they could.

Apparently they have elected not to show any of my objects, despite the fact that I opted in to show all of them. Apparently they've also elected not to show the for-sale objects of my alt. Maybe as retaliation for my daring to question Their Woolinesses.

Either that, or the thing isn't working right.

Given how well SLBoutique doesn't work, I figure it's the latter.

Maybe I'll try again.

So what happens if I ban this sheep-bot from my sim? Obviously I can't ban it from the Linden road but that's a tiny percentage of land. Does it stop coming there for good? or does it keep trying random grid locations in my sim until it succeeds or crashes?

If you ban him from your parcel he can't enter your land any more, but he can stand half a sim away (or a whole sim, or two sims away) and camera control back into your property. Before I estate-banned him and delisted my stuff, I noted that most of his 'results' were from incorrect locations, i.e. he identified a bunch of stuff as being for sale on the 'Beach' parcel, and very little for sale in the 'Mall' parcel. So he is standing / floating / whatever in one spot and scanning all over, logging stuff in neighboring parcels.

Wow, lots of people have probably already put this together, but this finally solves a mystery that people were trying to figure out in January of this year:

Banning Grid Shepherd dosn't help, in spite of their lies to the contrary. If you ban him from your land, he'll just wind up on the nearest parcel that he is NOT banned from, and scan your prims anyway. The only way to prevent the sheep spy from collecting data on every prim you have in-world and listing your "for sale" prims for public perusal is to go to the Sheep Island sim, locate their opt-out sign, and manually opt out. And even then, it probably still collects the data, it just doesn't display it publicly.

The last time I looked, when I opted out with every alt I have, they had the opt-out sign hidden on the third flroor of a building, way at the North edge of the sim, quite some way from the telehub, and the SLURL on their website did NOT send you to the sign - it sent you to their telehub, half a sim away.

.

From what Forsetti was saying , I think this is correct. They dont do anythign with the data, though.

He didnt even say if they delete it , he said specifically that they dont do anything with it,

Besides display the portion of the data thats on the search list.

Are we seriously going to hash out that entire 25,000 page long burglary thread again?

Nope - this threads about the sheepbot trying to cop a feel from Brenda.

And having an ugly av.

And not saying pardon me when it bumped her.

The rest is off topic.

Damn, and I thought they were smart enough to wait for things to get quiet and then just let the damn thing die. Guess they're not.

[sigh] Banning actually is a help, at the sim level, because when enough contiguous sims ban it will run out of places to stand. All of Anshe Chung's properties ban it, for example, and I believe other large estate-owners do as well. Besides getting your sim-owner to ban the thing, you can - and should - put camouflage names of your choice on your rezzed items, keep stuff in inventory except when you use it, set up decoy items, and if you like, post spoofs on their website. And, of course, if you can, freeze it, which is supposed to prevent an avatar from interacting in any way with its environment. I would mention orbiting the thing, but then that would be wrong, wouldn't it , gang?

Looks to me like they are interested in building some sort of database of SL objects for purposes far beyond what they choose to post. Beats me what, but beyond being exploitive of Residents and (judging by their apologists) insufferably arrogant so far, it looks like they are now being secretive as well. Seems like a bad combination to me.

I just wish they would stick to whatever it is they do well.
