From: Pierce Kronos The Abuse Report is your friend, use it. If you do not know how to AR someone or something, learn how. When you see evidence of griefing, file and get others to file, a half dozen AR's usually gets response. Be specific in the AR as to the type griefing, location, time and person responsible. When AR'ing objects, list the owner, not the creator. Way back when (that means about the time I joined SL.....Feb, 2006) that would hold true about AR's being your friend. Not anymore..........you cannot file an AR without a name. The system will not allow it. And lately, every time I've experience abuse it's been by objects with no name, no creator, no owner. So an AR is a waste of time........very far from your friend. It cannot be used. Getting others to file with you? Well, they have the same problem.........the AR will not go through without a name. And I know how to file an Abuse Report.........done my share over the year and a half I've been here. Same result everytime.........notthing. I can ban, eject, deny object entry to my property........but I cannot do a damned thing about flying boxes with obscene statements on them orbiting around my plot. Something more effective than an AR is necessary. It takes human intervention in many cases......human guided avatars. And a properly screened and trained resident "force" could be had and maintained.........and supervised. But Linden Labs has to take the lead. We, as residents, cannot do it........we don't have the means, access to the proper tools or the power to do it. I would not be opposed to a Linden trained staff of "police" patrolling (or being on "standby" the grid to help when help is needed.

From: Ciaran Laval Yeah I read that this morning, have you ever heard of that group? The thing is the article then goes onto suggest that they don't think that group are capable of such an attack so I took it all with a pinch of salt. I believe that a group with a Similar name WAS responsible for a grid Attack some months ago, the name is very familiar, But i ALSO Give the story no more credit than it is worth, as the Last time a grid Attack of this nature occurred, In Fact, EVERY time such an attack has Occurred, LL has Let us Know. IF this was a Grid Attack, it was neither Very Clever Nor Very Damaging, i see no reason why LL would switch tack, and keep it a Deep Dark secret. Angel.

At every one of the 10 or so events per day during beta, there was usually a Linden in attendance. If a griefer appeared (and griefers were rare), that griefer was dealt with on the spot. We also were not restricted in the use of force, and if a Linden wasn't around, we could freely orbit griefers without risk of being ARed. Unfortunately, the world got too big, and our wild west ways came to an end.

It was 2006 until they put in push and hit and took out Attack reporting ( That when Lindens became more GAY and lazy HINT. ) These days if you have a Linden in your pocket you can get reports done. Otherwise your wasting you time and energy filing a report. It was not just the world was too big, they just wanted to promoto the game and stopped dealing with attacks. Now whats makes me luagh is they still hold those taht have been banned from doing mentor duty? Why? That was around they time they change the attach rules etc. Its Just Who you know in the game that gets your reports read. I say Just stop the police blotter all together and only banned avies that bring down the game and otehr dangous factors. weapons reporting just so stop, since IF your inthe same bed with a linden you neve have your report looked at or even taken care of........ Now *that* I would like to see. Unless the "object" is a particle (which still has an ARable "emitter" , the object in question still has an owner and the owner has a name. Whether lag or being too far away from the object in question caused no name to come up in your AR screen - I do not know. I do know that Abuse Reports are effective for I have seen Lindens show up and deal with the AR'd problem. In one particular sandbox last night there were hundreds of self-replicating spheres, screaming AH's (sponge bobs), and giant, waving, prim penises -- AR's were filed and one of the newer GTeam liasons responded onsite and dealt with the griefing. Perhaps it is that Abuse Reports just don't work for you, but I wouldn't go around telling folks they don't work and that objects don't have owner's names associated with them.

Yeah, it's pretty common when a griefer weapon is attacking a sim and making it insanely busy for no owner information to be available. It's also common in those cases to get either " waiting)" or in some cases " hippos)" instead of name information. You are so spoiled to not know that .

The only time I've had an AR not show a name was due to lag or being too far away. I solved it by editing the object to get the griefer's name. You can also put *your* name in the AR name field and explain the situation. Or put Govenor Linden's name in there. It's important to get the AR in to get results and remember to always provide a screen shot.

No police!

From: Oryx Tempel It's a tough call... people liken SL to the Wild West, but even the Wild West had sheriffs, marshals, deputies, judges, etc. Yeah those people had to have really really good judgement and not all were perfect, but in the long run, they DID help maintain order. I don't think an actual 'police force' would be appropriate, but maybe a 'marshal' or 'sheriff' for every X number of sims? I just don't think any single group should be given that kind of power without a tremendous amount of oversight by Linden Lab, and I don't really think it's possible from a practical standpoint. In any case, the real power to deal with greifers comes from individual citizens coming together, speaking with one voice in a common cause. Over the past year, this approach has resulted in Linden Lab upgrading Second Life to include a large number of fixes and enhancements that improve the ability of citizens to defend their lands and themselves. There are many more to come, as well, if I'm reading my tea leaves correctly. Only by uniting in a common cause in this way can we affect any sort of change, and historically in SL this is the only thing that has ever worked.
