Doesn't matter. I don't want marauding vigilantes running through the landscape. Linden should police Public Spaces, and landowners should take care of their own land.

I belong to one of those groups with a daily presence in the sandboxes. We don't maraud nor are we vigilantes. We do NOT go to privately owned parcels that we have not been invited to. Most people are glad to see us when there has been a griefer attack, with the exception of the griefers themselves, because we are effective.

Lindens have very full plates as it is. I can't see them deploying people to patrol the sandboxes when they have us to alert them when the griefers have caused problems.

Not on anyone elses land either. Why these people don't learn to act out their adolescent roleplay fantasies in the appropriate environment and stop trying to justify inflicting them on the populace at large I'll never know.

I hate to break the bad news to everyone but not al persons with Payment Info Used in their profiles are Land Owners nor are they interested in 'owning' (renting really) land (server space).

You have a plot you can control? good for you!

Not everyone does.

Personally I do not like the idea of a Police force either .... Just remember however that those who 'own land' aren't the only ones getting hit.

It has nothing to do with roleplay. It has to do with serving the community and making the sandboxes safe and available for the people to build in. Read my previous post. :)

They're quite notorious, I believe they grew out of Something Awful. I seem to recall hearing that they griefed a rl furry convention last year.

Broccoli

they are actually a group of 4chaners who whenever 4chan is down or just for SnGs will occaisionally attack or grief SL.

I wasn't talking about a roleplay thing, I was talking about a REAL sheriff or Trustee or whatever: appointed by LL and given the authority to suspend accounts (not cancel), ban avatars, etc. It would be a serious job.

Try 4chan.

actuly it was 7chan, and it was just 2 white dudes wearing afros trying to portest Anthrocon, furries and fursuiters went out to join them and they dispersed shortly after loosing interest, so yea, i don't bug with those types of losers

about the attack that mgiht have brought the grid down, they were NOT Patriotic Nigras, the PN can't even type a damn sentence with out using some incoherrent internet languege, what makes you think they actuly have the knowledge to hack a grid?

what it probley was, was a hacker with to much time, he foudn the explot that has been in the SL code since Febuary 06', he got into said exploit in the system, rezzed an object (like a cube or a ball or any of the default build shapes with a script in them, this script will have the object bounce around the sim, and as it does, it multiplies very fast, so with in 23 seconds of rezzing 23,000 of the same objects will be bouncing around, it over loaded the servers, and thusly, crashed the grid

you can't forget parcels, alot of sl residents have parcels, small sections of land on a sim, which most of the time, they rent out from the sim or parcel owner

I have seen a few PN attacks on Furnation, and heared about them wanting to attack Northstar. They mainly seem to be anti-furry greifers, but I have not heared of them attacking SL in general? I have heared them about going after fur communities and they target FN in SL because of its sheer importaince to the furry community, its a very large fur community. They are very low life script kiddies, and I think to stop lots of greifer attacks LL should impose a sign up fee of roughly $25, they will lose sign ups, but also lose the greifer activity and multiple accounts because generally greifers will NOT want to pay for all their new accounts.

yea, the patriotic nigras are really little 12 to 14 year olds that their parents don't watch what they are doing on the net, when actuly, i have doen my research, they CAN go to jail for this, its whats known as HACKING which is a FEDERAL OFFENSE!

Update & rolling restart, grid borked afterwards. No need to come up with grid terrorists in order to explain the outage, imho.

Yep. The problems began on Friday after the rolling restart.

I have tried reading posts on the pathetic nigra forum....I'm a linguist, I can even read and understand hieroglyphs...but THAT???? So that's what happens to people when they turn into "hax0r script kiddies" - severe case of aphasia? Txtspkitis??? Lobotomy???? I was both amazed and disgusted. Like watching a train crash. :P And the urge to post obscenities, thinly disguised, left and right? A post is only complete if it contains the word "penos" (sic) ???

What possible powers could they have without a background check?

Easy. Any a$$hat griefer could join the group and use those powers to grief teh hell out of people. Yes, they themselves could be ARed for that, but in the meantime they could ruin a lot of people's Second Life and drive off potential new Residents.

And with throw away accounts, who cares if they get banned or not. It's not like that has stopped griefing as it is. If banning the "bad cop" would work, then so would banning the "criminal".

Doesn't work either way.

Acount banning needs to stay SOLELY with LL and said employees.

LandBanning/Ejection needs to stay SOLEY with LandOwners and their 'employees'.

Anything else is too wide open to explotation.

In the event of not being able to talk down an asshat/griefer, what "ultimate" powers could a "Trustee" possibly have?
Perhaps when all else failed, they would be able to suspend an account for a very limited time - say a few hours and certainly not more than a day, with automatic account reinstatement unless a Linden intervenes to make the suspension more permanent.
Overview of their activities would be essential. Penalty for abusing "Trustee" powers = banning.

I'd say that a check based on an exchange of emails and a review of the applicant's SL history would be sufficient. The account would have to be older than some reasonable age.
Would there be enough Premium accounts interested in becoming "Trustee"? If so, then put that as a condition.

I was kicking ideas around, so don't take this analysis as a flame ;)
I don't have any particular desire to be part of a police force. As I posted somewhere earlier, I've only witnessed one incident of griefing in the 7 months of my SL.

Nope! Any a$$hat griefer could not join the group.
1. They would have to exchange email with LL
2. Their account would have to be of some stated age
3. LL would have reviewed the history of that account. 'Sleeper' accounts with no pattern of activity would not get through
4. The account might possibly have to be a Premium account

So - *If* LL were to grant some power to Trustees, then the a$$hat griefer would have to do a lot of preparation and possibly pony up a Premium account (i.e a verified traceable payment method).

*If* a Trustee were to abuse the situation to grief others, how extensive would the damage be?
That would depend on the extent of the powers, and how they are managed by LL.

Level 1 :
The Trustee tries to deal with the griefer as any interested party would at the moment. If that doesn't fix it then - the Trustee has a direct, instant hot-line to LL to alert them to abuse.
That could work. Input from Trustees regarding abuse would not get lost on the queue of x thousand ARs - many of which might be trivial and/or unactionable.

Level 2 :
In the absence of LL ability to monitor and act in a timely fashion on Trustee reports, Trustees might be granted the power to *temporarily* suspend an account - with limits on the number of times they could do that.

With either level, any griefing a$$hat griefer could get whack-a-moled very quickly, as could any instant unverified alt that comes back.

Level 1 doesn't give any scope for griefing others. It's just a hot-line to tell Mommy.
If Mommy considers that the Trustee is a weeney whiner, the Mommy can spank the Trustee and take their toy away.

*If* an a$$hat griefer were to get through the hoops and become a trustee at Level 2 powers, then the most damage they could do would be to *temporarily* suspend some limited number of accounts pending LL overview.

Maybe, *if* there were to be trustees monitoring, say sandboxes initially,..
1. They start off with a hotline to Mommy.
2. After their input is seen to be valid for some timescale, they get the ability to suspend accounts between LL mandatory review on a sliding scale. For the first week/month their account suspension count is capped at x, for the second period it's capped at x+y, etc

To be able to inflict noticeable damage, the a$$hat griefer would have to invest time and resources in building up a genuinely trusted profile. This would involve working his/her way up to a high point in the sliding scale of level 2.

YES: It is conceivable that someone would actually do that.
YES: It is infinitely preferable that LL would do all policing themselves.

However:
A) I want "the bigs" fixed.
B) I want LL to stop griefers.
C) I want to win a grillion of some decent currency in a lottery
D) I want to be happy, healthy and wealthy forever. Like - *forever*

None of the above may happen.
In the meantime, some pragmatic measures might help to ease the pain. :)

The problem here seems to be "public" lands. Why should this surprise anyone? Common ownership always leads to over use and abuse. The "commons" really are tragic.

Other residents should never have the power to ban another user from SL for any amount of time.

What better way to grief than to join the SL Militia? Eek, I find the whole premise broadly offensive.

Once again, as I have posted before, an SL resident run police force with the powers to actually DO something would be a fantastic addition to SL. It would for one take the load off the backs of LL having to try and deal with situations like these and there will be many more people available to try and resolve and combat problems such as this.

Oh HELL NO! What's stopping PN or 4-5-6-7-8chan or b/tards or whatever else is out there from joining this citizen police force?? If they aren't able to get into it that way, becoming a "LL cop" is like wearing a bullseye. It's almost entrapment because you're providing a target when there was none.

Then there's the fact that a majority of people in SL are ignorant jerks with control issues. I already have to worry about those kinds of people when I'm out in RL...they're called police.

The day there is a citizen's police force endorsed by LL is the day I physically fly down to LL and complain in person...and I know I wouldn't be alone...and I know LL knows this...which is why I know it won't happen.

They want us to AR things we see so they can decide what is dealt with in what manner. As flawed as it is, I would MUCH rather have that kind of broken system than what you're suggesting.

No socialist mommy-state for me!!

No...wait...I mean...I want a police force...;)

But seriously, folks, this kind of thread is what spreads this bullshit prokofy conspiracy theory junk. Just about every conspiracy theory is borne out of the average sap's inability to grasp the actual gravity of a bad or traumatic situation and coping by finding a bigger reason for the problem at hand.

Things happen and no we won't ever know every possible angle of the situation. Get over it.

It's not like SL was so stable before all this happened that such an outage of services could only be the work of leet-tards.

Don't worry, my children. We will get through this together. Take my hand and I will lead you through the pretend computer fire to the land of scripted milk and honey.

Ooooh....so many nice new words....making this linguist very happy. Leet-tards....mmmmh.....bullshit prokofy conspiracy theory junk...THAT is a jewel of a multi-part compound! Me eat new words! :D

But seriously, the only reaction I have towards these conspiracy theories is "NOT AGAIN!". Problem is, if a hacker attack REALLY happened, no one would believe it because of all the crying wolf every time something goes wrong...
