Do people live in The Burbs in SL?

Last year, there was a gal in forum that had a really pretty neighborhood style sim, with pretty homes and pretty landscaped yards, and streets, and picket fences....but I just pulled up her name, and she doesn't seem to have it anymore. And I've been searching for a similar style sim, that has a real neighborhood type atmosphere, and can't find one. (one that is not deserted, that is). Not really a period theme, like victorian or urban....but more of a Mayberry style or a suburb style.

Is there a neighborhood style sim out there, that has pretty houses in rows....with pretty yards, and streets....and real live neighbors.....and why is it so hard to find?

Does this concept not appeal to the population? People don't want to live in The Burbs here? Are they trying to escape that?

Try the search phrase, "Desperate House Wives."

I'd think not. There are several technical and logistical reasons not to live too close to your neighbors, and not to have houses and people packed too densely. I don't want my neighbors listening to my chat (or me having to listen to theirs), for one thing. Also, if I see somebody on my radar, I'm going to be curious about what they're up to, and I assume my neighbors are the same. Security perimeters would also be a problem if houses were too close together. And of course the usual problems with prims, scripts, lag, etc. that are inherent in the SL architecture. Why do you think people build skyboxes? Not necessarily because they are anti-social.

Not exactly, Dekka. The lots would probably need to be no less than a 4096, so that you could have a very nice home, with nice landscaping, ample prims for furnishings, and all the details.

Just northeast of Bay City, and connected by bridge, you'll find a place called Shermerville; it's a number of sims with a distinctly suburban look that I think is what you're looking for. There are even a few plots for sale, if you're so inclined.

Very charming, but a little high priced for me :(

To the OP, if interested in renting v. mainland, take a look at Thistle and/or Virtue. It's where I am now, very quaint and neighborly feel to it. Liz Gealach has just gotten it up and running in the last few months and does a lot of community parties, get togethers, etc...plus she has some very cute houses :)

Yikes! 35k for a 512! (Shermerville) I would have to let the Pool Boy go, to swing that.

Kylie - those sims are lovely! Exactly what I had in mind. Very well done. I might be able to find something there. Thanks.

I was just thinking about this the other day too. Something like an oceanside Miami suburb. Palm trees, landscaping, and a community beach.

Wasn't there an RL real estate compny that was renting or selling land in SL on the mainland?I remember checking it out and seeing rows and rows of suburban styled houses. Ugh I can't remember the name..

To pull off a suburban theme well, you pretty much need to set it up with double-primmed lots and moderately large parcels, to offer enough prims and enough space between parcels. Difficult to do that right and still have the parcels viable commercially. It also presents issues in that it's usually inpossible to expand once you have a lot in that sort of setup.

SL is much better suited to sprawling ranch-style homes on large amounts of acerage. It doesn't do well in simulating urban or even suburban densities realisticly.

LMAO Yeah that's steep! I've encountered a few neighborhoods in my explorations that sort of fit the bill. One I think was in a Paris type area and had beautiful homes on tree lined streets. But that was so long ago I have no idea if it exists now.

Sarah Nerd used to do property rental and I lived in one of her neighborhoods for a while......It had that feel to it. The plots were all 1024 and people seemed to stick to a very suburban concept with their homes....barring a mini castle here and there :p But it was nice.....you could walk down the streets and meet other neighbors.

Right now I live in a NYC sim in a warehouse apartment and I have to say....after having my own land.....doing the homestead sim thing.....I'm really pretty happy with city life. We have some fun people living on the grid and the community feel is obvious. If you can't find a burb to suit ya.....you may want to check out Old New York .... or if you've always wanted an apartment in the city as a 2nd home LOL It's a great place! ;)

Ceera, I've seen urban builds that work quite well. Avion Raymaker's sim, for example. And my Greek village build at Lebettu was suburban-density housing, if not done in the white picket fence motif.

Yes, I know it's possible. Just saying you don't see it very often because it's difficult to set such areas up and remain financially viable.

Ceera - that is what I was wondering about, because for a few days I was compelled to just make it myself. But to set it up right....you need a ton of prims....and if I were to put the homes together, as I would like....they would have to rent for about 2000L a week, (no profit on that - and there would be vacancies at times)....and not sure if people would pay that much to rent.

I'm going to check out those locations above, thanks.

Let me be a wee bit blunt, to try to nail the scenario. One of my "sisters" has a roleplay group that involves several couples, a handyman, an auto mechanic, a pool boy and his gf, the couples' interior decorator, the plumber, a few secretaries....and they had a place a year ago for it, but let it fizzle out, because I sold the location.....and the location is what made it work. It was all about atmosphere. But they all miss the fun.

Without going into the details....(you can use your imagination)....does that have to be on Zindra land? Things were different a year ago. If they all rented several homes in one of the above locations....would that be uncool?

Sounds interesting. I could go about it two ways, a place where I'd stick to human, and/or a place I'd run around as a raccoon playing in the trash. And breaking in and sitting on the furniture.
