If you want to take a big step backward, you could try Cantr (www.cantr.net) which is a text-based world simulator. It's pretty interesting, but moves at the speed of chess.

.

That can still be faster than SL some days :p

Try something totally different for a change.

I would agree with EQ or WoW or something similar if the OP had not noted looking for a free game and those types require a monthly fee.

I purchased a set of Hoyle games on a disc a long time ago and when I want to chill out I listen to the radio and play some of the games on there. (I'm getting quite good at "Pacer Racer!";) The disc was fairly inexpensive as I recall.

Another game I played a looooong time ago (had to purchase the game itself, but free from there on out) was Creatures. It was the first game that introduced a form of Artificial Intelligence and was quite addicting. However, it does not work on Win XP. On a whim last night I researched to see if a newer version was out that *would* operate on XP and there is a newer version called "Exodus" - still Creatures. I found it on Amazon.com for around 17.00 USD and purchased it for old times sake and am really looking forward to receiving it!

As for completely free, a friend of mine and his wife play some game that sounds like they own a farm and harvest crops or something. Being a city girl that sort of went over my head, but they love it, so going to ask him what the name is, check it out, and will report back. :)

Dede, Anarchy Online can be played for free these days and they have clubs where DJ's stream there own music for parties. It has real life advertizing around it's cities and so is like SL that way, but it is a futuristic sci-fi shootem up too.
Also, though it's nothing like SL, Fiesta online is free and fun.

Haven't read the entire thread so I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but Runescape is free:

My kid plays runescape. I know little about it except there is a lot of battle.
Of course to get into the good part of runescape you have to pay. IN SL it helps to have some money/L$, but one can get by just as well without it.
From what I have seen of it, there is no real comparison between SL and runescape.

I am going to die laughing if this turns out to be in SL.

FYI, this entire post is against the terms of service for this forum, and I think it's a bit rude to expect LL to pay for hosting a discussion recommending its competitors.

Considering we had a 600 post thread on Blue Mars recently, I don't think it's an issue with the moderators. And as you say, there's nothing wrong with talking about things that SL might lack.

One thing that SL doesn't have is a structured game environment (individual sims such as Numbkalla being more the exception than the rule). Naturally, people will tend to seek games like that elsewhere. I admit to playing Freerealms, myself, but like most structured games, I find myself getting bored with it after a month or so.

Still, I've got the toughest pixie in the forest :)

While I havent found anything like Second Life, I have messed around in other various Free-To-Play MMORPGs.

9Dragons - Martial Arts/Chinese Mythology. Really good fighting moves that change as you level up. Prepare for countless days of "grinding" at higher levels.

Tales Of Pirates- Be a Pirate!

Rappelz- Kinda like every other MMO with elves & monsters & goblins. Good graphics.

FusionFall (cartoon network game)- Plays in your Browser. Fun if you're a fan of shows on Cartoon Network.

Project Torque (online racing game. Excellent graphics)- Pretty Sweet!! Has various race modes: Drift, simulation, arcade, off-road/exploration, drag racing. You can modify your car as you gain points for completing races. Spend a few real $$ and buy a different car.

Space Cowboy- Space ship based MMO.

Check out the FilePlanet website. They have a whole lot of links to Free MMOs.

Also, if you're interested in the virtual world aspect, look at MUDs, MOOs, and MUCKs.

I used to be addicted to AC, but haven't played in nearly a year. Now I'm afraid to...I'm sure my town is covered with weeds!

OpenLife is just like SL but only has tumbleweeds blowing through it. Utherverse/Red Light Centre is solely about anonymous sex and is as busy as hell.

Also, one might be able to reduce boredom with SL by changing what they do in SL. If you shop and chat most of the time, you could try building, if you make sculpties all the time, try exploring, etc. There's a SL Games forum here at forums.secondlife.com, one could look through there and try some of the games mentioned therein.

Or for something entirely different: start an alt, do a search on the last name of your main, and pick the profile of the 35th person on the list. From that profile, take the 3th pick to a public place on the list, whether you like it or not, and start your second second life from there. To make it really interresting: no trading of goods allowed between your main and your alt, not even the sharing of landmarks. Find stores using only the picks of people you meet. If your main mainly makes clothes, then your alt isn't allowed to for the first month, but has to earn money some other way if required. Same if your main is mainly a builder, or a sculptor or a scripter: pick another way to earn money.

Do the Spider Robinson* brain transfer schtick... create an alt and try to steal your boy/girlfriend away from yourself, and then tell them what you did while you're in bed with them.

You can only do this trick once. :D

Here's a good site for finding names of various virtual worlds and related phenomena:

http://www.kzero.co.uk/blog

There's some pictures which you can click on to see bigger versions, then magnify to read the text, that have some things I don't remember seeing before.

stop suggesting WoW, if the OP wanted to pay to play then there are much better options available that the game that dumbed down the MMO industry to appease the "i want it now" generation.
WoW did to MMOs what Americans did to beer.

You could start to play Third World Life.

This is the most challenging variant. In opposite to the original, there are no fees, no client, no download, no technical problems, there are even no computers and no avatars, even no swaps to Zindra. Every player plays there himself/herself. In one of the rogue states you will get one hectare land which you have to make copious. The first half year you will be supported by auxiliary forces, after that you have to act on your own responsibility. But attention: drought, non-player-characters (Warlords), cut and burn, are some of the tricks which the programmers have intended for you.

A more relaxing alternative is: Neverending Life.

This is the Buddha-Kick for all who cannot have enough lifes. The fun there is: The game starts every 15 minutes new - automatically - and at every new start you will start with a new character. Beginners starting the game as plant louse. To be better and better you have to sample as much as possible Karma-Points within each 15 minutes and from reincarnation to reincarnation. In this way you have chances to level up not only to be a human but to be a dolphin.

Yes, I know - I started playing it years ago and mainly pop in about twice a year to keep an eye on it. I was being kind - I actually think it's a breeding ground of sociopathic behaviour.

(I don't think it's rude to contrast SL and similar services in the SL forum, which may seem like the same thing but IMHO it's quite different. LL may disagree with me on that, though!)

A better way to ask this question would be "What forums discusses different virtual worlds, similar to SL?" -- and post your question there.

there's little danger in dicussing what other MMPOG exist, since SL is still a unique niche, and we all need a break sometimes...

in the vein of things that cost cash (but blessedly only once) there's always guild wars... one time buy, I've been playing there off and on for over 4 years now. (and free if you have a freind that's given it up and will give you their logon info... which of course is VERY against their terms of service, but I know more than a few people that have done it.

Heyy! It's Second Life. =)

Osprey, what in Entropia is sociopathic? I haven't tried that one.

Because it's expensive and a ton of reading is required so you know weapon damage rate, decay rate, and ammunition useage, older players will try to scam players they think don't know what they have by saying things like, "I'll introduce you to a great group and you can hunt big mobs with us - but you need a [specific weapon]. I'll give you my totally awesome one [totally decayed] but you have to trade me yours [brand new] or I won't have a weapon." I've had that tried out on me several times, heh.

And players routinely shoot other players. It just rewards scuzzy behaviour. There are a few nice people, but mostly it seems to be the desperate and the mean. And I've never understood why someone would stand around the teleporter for hours selling and buying cheesey loot and sweat.

First I liked shooting things, but that got old. I used to like running around dodging monsters and sight-seeing, as it's pretty, but it's harder now to escape being killed. Last time I lasted about a minute :-D

My advice: if you decide to check it out do a ton of research first. That's actually how I always used to approach places, and it's part of the fun, really.

The best site was the Entropia Pioneers, but I'm not sure it's still around.
