Does anyone know of any other online games (free to play) that is like SL? I'd like to try something different, after 3 years, SL is getting boring for me and I've almost made up my virtual mind to close my store and sell my land.

Well yes, there is Blue Mars, but it's still in beta and only for PC computers.
Keneva, IMVU (is that still around?) and EntropiaUniverse. I have not tried any of the above. Am only passing along some names. I think SL is still the best of anything out there. I hope you keep at least your basic membership. _____________________

If you're bored with SL, you might want to try things that aren't like SL, such as word games or Quake Online or anything that's not a virtual world.
I don't find the OpenSim worlds too interesting to visit because they are just like SL, but with worse physics. If you are up to trying to deal with it's Chinese-ness, Hipihi might be worth trying. Active Worlds, Cybertown, and There.com bear some resemblance to SL, along with the already mentioned Kaneva . Umm, let's see, there a sports game, Empire of Sports. There's a beta of a 3D game building system you might find amusing, at atmosphir.com . Papermint might be worth looking at. It's visually interesting. _____________________

Also Twinity.com has a virtual world.
Vivaty and JustLeapIn might be of interest. There's a nice roundup of virtual worlds, 3d chats, and things of that sort at http://arianeb.com/more3Dworlds.htm . _____________________

OP, a lot of people are having fun in Metaplace.
Entropia Universe is expensive-ish. The thing that was always good about There was vehicles - dunebuggies and hoverboards especially. _____________________

From what I've seen of them, if you're bored with SL you'll soon become even more bored with other virtual worlds.
Most of the competitors (Blue Mars aside) have poorer, more cartoony graphics although they might be more stable than SL. Have you tried any of OpenSim based clones of SL? Open Life looks and works just like SL, although it's set so that land is traded only as full sims. _____________________

FreeRealms is kinda fun if you like cutsey things with lots of quests to complete, more a game than virtual world though.

Most other games are only for PC, so, no. And I'm not sure game developers THAT myopic need my business anyway.
I looked into Keneva: They put it in their agreement that if anyone hacks your account you are responsible for their actions. No thank you. _____________________

I have to agree with argent.
None of the things anyone has suggested in this thread are anything like SL. Other then being 3d and allowing chat, there are no similarities. |

If you want something like SL, but better, then you're basically looking for something
-identical to SL, -but without lag (mostly user generated, so you'd have to get different users), -with better graphics (part of that being user created as well, with the extra that the system requirements would be too steep for many residents, thus wouldn't have them, thus making such a "game" not as big nor good as SL) -with a better database & permissions model (good luck designing that one, it's a constant quality vs quantity problem, finding the point where servers give good enough performance while keeping enough options available) LL is working on these things themselves. SL2 is in development for a far away future. And porting all the current users and creations to that (if they even want to do such a thing) or making it backward compatible will be one heck of a job. |

skip entropia... it's a money sink for people that don't have anything better to do (run around and hunt things is about all you can do cashless)... blue mars looks to be more than a year away from being solid, and offers none of the flexible free form nature of SL, mostly eye candy and commercialism.
even with it's drawbacks, SL has very little in the way of competition in it's core attributes of freedom/ease of content creation (even with it's severe limitations), nor in it's variety of social realtime community building/collaboration (a sadly neglected part). of course if those aren't the things you're after.... my advice is to walk away for awhile, fulfill the needs that SL doesn't, and if you find you're missing something SL provides in a unique way for you, then come back. _____________________

OP, a lot of people are having fun in Metaplace. Entropia Universe is expensive-ish. The thing that was always good about There was vehicles - dunebuggies and hoverboards especially. Expensive-ish doesn't even begin to describe Entropia Universe ![]() It's really just a sci-fi mmorpg, and everything you do costs money there. You also have to constantly repair every single piece of armor, clothes, equipment, weapons you have which also costs money. And the only way to make money in this game without using a credit card, is to do 'sweating' and you would have to do this for like a month, and then you have to sell this crap to other players and then you would barely have enough for a simple/crappy weapon and some basic armor which will get you nowhere. Hunting and mining, will never return the money it costs to do both of them. So this game is just designed to be a money sinkhole. _____________________

Does anyone know of any other online games (free to play) that is like SL? I'd like to try something different, after 3 years, SL is getting boring for me and I've almost made up my virtual mind to close my store and sell my land. So, which is it? Like SL, or different to SL? There are lots to choose from, depending on whether you want the social interaction of SL type worlds, or wish to play games in MMORPG type worlds. Some offer both. You might also want to consider getting involved in the beta testing of new worlds, where you get the chance to influence the direction they are going in, and the feature set. You could also build your own (using open-source world creation software, like Opensim, for example, but there are others), create your own world, with your own rules, and invite others to play there. FYI, this entire post is against the terms of service for this forum, and I think it's a bit rude to expect LL to pay for hosting a discussion recommending its competitors. (I don't think it's rude to contrast SL and similar services in the SL forum, which may seem like the same thing but IMHO it's quite different. LL may disagree with me on that, though!)
A better way to ask this question would be "What forums discusses different virtual worlds, similar to SL?" -- and post your question there. |

Screw 'em. If LL did a better job of running their virtual world, maybe people wouldn't be needing to discuss competitors.

It's not a game, so there can't be any "other" games like it.

Try something different
06-30-2009 08:49
Try something totally different for a change. I spend most of my time in WOW, or world of warcraft, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com - But be careful, it's a stupid game at first and then you find yourself addicted. The real fun doesn't start till you hit level 80, which unfortunately takes a long time getting there, but once you're there WOW isn't just one game, but basically dozens of games in one. You can Raid, or do Player Versus Player, or Quest, or do battlegrounds, etc. There's more to do then there is time. This is totally different then SL, so if you want a change then maybe give it a shot. (oh ... not free though so something to consider).

If you want to take a big step backward, you could try Cantr (www.cantr.net) which is a text-based world simulator. It's pretty interesting, but moves at the speed of chess.
