How to handle with avatars wearing the tag 'SL Police' or 'SL Military Police' in official welcome area's for new residents.

I know LL isn't for those groups, but cant find anything about it in search. Based on the CS about harassment ("Communicating or behaving in a manner which is offensively coarse, intimidating or threatening";) i should say that this is a form of offensively communicating via tags and uniform.

We normally ask to remove the tag or leave the area, but based on what rules can we say that? And can we ban such persons who refuse to listen?

As long as the new folks understand that these 'police' aren't official, I'd just ignore them..

If they're pretending to be official, AR them - LL doesn't take kindly to such things.

Problem is that it is an official area where u ca land for the first time. Most of them doesnt know what is real or not. So they can feel offended or just go to that person for help instead going to the official greeters.

Please tell them Weston Graves has committed a heinous act of disrespect toward authority figures and send them my way. :D

A more serious answer would be to AR them for using the letters "SL" perhaps. I don't know the specific TOS violation, but common sense dictates impersonating a company official is not a wise thing to do.

Guys who want to join a real world police force but can't make the cut become security guards. Guys who can't even make the cut for mall security become SL police. :P

I made an AR for grieving me in IM http://forums.secondlife.com/images/icons/icon10.gif, wanted private information from me (homeland) and i said i had not to answer that with the answer that i was wrong in that, and second he was calling me names. Banned him from the area also.

An hour later they were with two. The new one asked me to c/p the IM-chat in a notecard (what is asking to violate the ToS). I had to tell him several times that c/p was forbidden, but was still asking for a copy. Didnt do anything then and they left.

I know that there are provisions in the TOS about misleading names that make it appear one is an employee of Linden Lab. I would presume it would fall under this.

I am guessing it is not a linden welcome area (by that I mean, linden owned land) but rather a 3rd party welcome area

being that you said that you banned him from the area.

then you can request tag removal or anything else you want and do not need any reasons for such other than the fact that it is what you want.

it's not a Linden welcome area, but one of the gateways mentioned on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Gateway. New residents can chose their first time for such a gateway.

It was followed up by SL Mentors and we have now our own meetings and exams to be a greeter. Some of our greeters are SL mentors as well now.

i ran into a bunch of wannabe pixel cops once, they were at some race track training high speed chasing.
I opened a live chat with linden support, asking about the "legality" of a group that calls themselves SL police force... linden labs guy told me "ignore them, if they harrass you file an AR."

A Police tag is the best thing to put up before a good griefing. =^-^=

Really... Tags are pointless. Look for the surname. If it ain't "Linden", then the person ain't worth the bandwidth needed to orbit them. (^_^)

Then again... A good pie toss.... =^-^=

I work at a gateway sim

and yes, you can tell people to turn off the tag, and if they refuse, ban them.

there is no reason you (or anyone) should have to put up with that, especially if the owners of the land have granted you with the power to deal with stuff

expect to get complaints, and of course threats of AR (I got plenty for dealing with griefers and such)

(as the boss told me, if people are not complaining about you, then you are not doing your job well enough)

I thought LL's branding policy forbid the use of 'SL' in group names?

(not that all of these are actionable in the real world...)
http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/trademark/unauthorized.php

#7 should apply

I'd imagine it would depend on the context.

'SL Sheriff' would be against it, while 'Sheriff Within SL' seems like it would probably be passable.

Think that's the way. 'SL Police' let people think that they are police officers in service of SL (read LL). We deal here with newbies who dont understand the meaning and the connections of tags.

From the Second Life Terms of Service:
From: someone
In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not:... (ii) impersonate any person or entity without their consent, including, but not limited to, a Linden Lab employee, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity;

(emphasis mine)

IMO this covers the case where individuals from these groups claim to be 'official' or 'backed by the Lindens' - there isn't a specific AR category for this, but choosing 'Other' then using the word 'misrepresentation' in the subject field seems appropriate.

Auti … why not put up a big sign at the landing point informing the newbies that there is no such thing as SL Police and to report all ppl that claim to be. This should send these griefers running once they see their cover is blown. :)

I wish the SL police would arrest people that make sweeping generalizations about 100% of any group.
