I'm TOTALLY new to SL (just signed up last night actually). And I was completely overloaded. While I'm not entirely new to MMOPGs, I felt completely lost. I somehow managed to close the tutorial that pops up when you first begin and have no clue how to bring it back. So now I'm just "winging" it. I'll have to find information on the basics of SL soon. No worries though.
Even so, there was a lot of helpful advice, even if I did have to dig through a lot of posts to find tips that were more helpful to me at this point in my SL experience. I will be trying that that "freebie" thing for sure!

OK, great thread but ... you guys are describing SL to newbies **in veteran's terms**!
So now it needs one more thing: A glossary of terms!
rezz prim cyber etc.

From: danica Cullen Re. #2, I have a hard enough time trying to remember to wear underwear. So embarassing to wear a cute skirt and be out somewhere and discover I'm "flashing" or that others can cam up my skirt -- the modern version of wearing polished patent leather shoes. Re. #3, that's the missing lyric after "Don't stand on Superman's cape. Don't spit into the wind. Don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger." "And you don't mess around with Jim!" ...so that's why there's underwear... I just finished reading through the 14 pages that now exist [and saw no one had answered that]... While reading (I was on at the same time), I found a freebie shop, got a ton of outfits, then added 3 folders to my inventory to sort them and the freebies I got at that intro place (Help Island, I think it was). I'm not sure what to put in my profile... I don't have the L10 yet to post a picture, even though I got a really cool screencap of my character posing at one of my favorite places so far (which is public, never fear). A note to the not-quite-argument-(but-my-english-is-failing-this-late-at-night) over privacy issues: That favorite place I mentioned (which I'm going to put in my picks when I'm online next and am editing my profile) has a few little information signs up that say, "Use this space, be considerate to people who probably want privacy, and stay away from our private residence, which is over there" (not actual quote, but a sumup) So my advice to people who have/are getting land: if you want people to be able to come into certain areas and don't want to make it completely blocked off, this will get the people who may not realize they're disturbing anyone to stay in the public areas. I don't know, I'm new But it could help. Oh, and I've yet to get that butt-grab thing to work. Ctrl and Alt didn't seem to work either. I'm on an older computer, though it meets all the minimum requirements and most of the upper requirements, and am using a wireless connection, which is slower than the hard-wire connection that I use most of the time (when I'm not here, sigh)... In short, I get weird lags--not just freezing or slowness, but sometimes I'll hit the arrow key once to get a step or two forward... and my avatar will start flying (apparently through walls!) until it reaches the end of the area square... and then loop to the other side and keep going! So I'd really like something easier than those camera controls I found in View ^.^ They take about 5 clicks to recognize that I'm clicking. </whining> I've been on for about 3 days (I think I appear to be about a week or so old, because I signed up a while before signing in the first time), and already have a couple of good friends to chat with Just out of curiosity: who else likes just flying around? If I get bored with a place, instead of walking around to find the next place (and falling into water when my character decides to jump ahead a good distance), I fly until I see something big beneath me again. @DaveC: YES! We need a glossary... I know most of what I've seen, but rez/res/rezz? I am confused. All I know for sure from context is that it's not resolution.

Agree with most of the tips people have posted but wanted to add one of my own: If you're at all interested in art, graphic design or photography JOIN FLICKR second life group! www.flickr.comThere's a big, (fairly!) friendly and (mostly!) supportive SL community there - as well as forums relating to how to take better pics in SL and all sorts of other issues. I've learned so much about taking and editing pics there - and a lot of the cool places I've seen I found out about because of seeing pics in the second life group pool first.

another tip:
If you wish to rent land and you see an ZOMG bargain, it probably won't last forever. Read the land covenants carefully and/or talk to the Estate owner. Just as in the real world, an estate owner (i.e, island owner) has to charge a bare minimum per square meter per month just to pay tier, never mind paying himself or herself and/or advertising and/or staff wages.
If the estate owner only charges you L$1 to move in and only L$1.00 per square meter per month (i.e., 512 lindens for 512 square meters for one month), don't be surprised when the rent goes up. Just make sure you know up front WHEN the rent will go up. Because it will, unless the owner enjoys giving very cheap land to people.

I agree with just about everything everyone said.So I'll just post what I was gonna say some of it's already been said but whatever. 1)Just because my character doesnt "look as good as you" doesn't mean you can insult them.I had one person come up to me on Money Island and do that for no reason at all...I am so tempted to post her name too, stuck up little...anyway,so called "noobs" have feelings too.Help 'em out if they ask or maybe politely suggest a good store.Don't forget, some of these supermodel looking characters aren't s*** in real life. 2)Just cause I'm at a sandbox doesn't mean I want to be hit with your lame and annoying scripts/objects/weapons.ASK FIRST BEFORE YOU TEST ON PEOPLE.But think before you agree to get hit with one of these...they can really jack you up. 3)Horny guys, there are places in SL you can go.Leave good people alone. 4)There is some sick price gouging in SL.You want how much for a skin? Please.Send a message to these people..keep looking or learn to make it yourself. 5)DTA..Don't trust anyone.Kinda relates to #2 about accepting things from others.Be careful when someone offers you a "cool" item.Could be a naughty script.Of course the DTA rule doesn't apply 24/7 but be wary. 6)Research apartments before you buy.Ask alot of questions.Ask a current resident of the apartment complex, house, etc. what they think of it and the manager or owner.I've found a shady manager or two myself. 7)There's tons of ways of getting Sl help...you're on one of em if youre reading this. A wise person once said "Fighting on the internet is like being in the Special Olympics.. even if you win you're still retarded" Offensive,yes.True,yes. 9)Sort your inventory before it gets out of control. When you get into the 10,000 item range (and you probably will) or more, and stuff isn't organized...it gets annoying. 10)Don't ask "What can I do here?" Silly question.Do a search for something, and chances are you'll find what youre lookin' for or close.Today I rode very tall water slides at one amusement park, surfed at a beach,HUNTED & KILLED ZOMBIES at another amusement park, and finished the day by renting some movies and taking em home to watch.Later I'll go to a club and shake my booty.Anything is possible.

accidental nudity
08-03-2008 22:06
After a month, I discovered I was doing this - I am sorry! I thought you could change clothes in a sandbox. I started going there to open boxes and try on freebies but I was just warned about being naked. I thought it was okay there - that sandboxes were "try out places" - oh well. But where do you go? If you don't "rent" an apartment, what to do except teleport around until you find an empty site? Or go to a mature site? What in the world do the teens do over in teenland?
The person who warned me told me to just move entire folders of clothes onto my avator but you know, that still gives you a moment of nudity.
So I came to here to review the Knowledge Base and you know, it sucks a little for beginners. I was completely lost at first and developed some unfortunate habits! There is very little explanation about changing clothes and hair and so on. I've been completely dependent on YouTube tutorials (which I also found by accident) for even opening boxes.
I wish there had just been a few SIMPLE, PLAIN LANGUAGE explanations. No slang. I'm so embarrassed.

I have changed in three different ways.
1. I have found places where usually is no-one, and I check with the minimap first just in case.
2. I change in a store dressing room. This is the best place for opening boxes too.
3. I just put new clothing on top of the old ones. Sometimes the old ones just detach by themselves, sometimes I detach them after I have the new ones on. No nudity, and I can do this anywhere.

I wish there had just been a few SIMPLE, PLAIN LANGUAGE explanations. No slang. I'm so embarrassed. You don't really have to get naked to change clothes. You never have to take off clothes. When you right click on a clothing item in your inventory and choose "wear" that item will just replace whatever you were already wearing on that part of your body. If you right-click on a whole folder of clothing and choose "replace outfit" every thing you were wearing will come off and everything in the folder will come on - so if there is nothing but a shirt in the folder you will be standing there with no pants or shoes. But if you right click on the folder and choose "add to outfit" the shirt in the folder will replace the shirt you are wearing, but leave everything else you are wearing alone.

From: Desmond Shang 1) Meet some people. Otherwise the grid is pointless and you feel like a homeless person. Best way to do this is kinda hang out other new people while you learn to use things. NCI, The Shelter, and *cough* even some themed areas I know of are very welcoming to new people. 2) Post on the forumz. Omg, I know that name! Suddenly you know fifty people and without really too much sorting you get a sense of who you could likely say hi to if you needed a quick tip. 3) Get the free stuff. Yadni's junkyard, or search 'freebie'. Tons out there, and you'll be able to get by well enough. 4) Don't spend any money your first month. If you get hooked you will be spending tons soon enough. Most who stay fall in love with the grid, spend tons, then 'crash' and withdraw before they stabilise. Save yourself the rollercoaster ride. 5) Find the most obscure sandbox possible (search or ask around) and learn to rez a few prims, upload a texture if you have $L 10 on you, and play like a kid with a new toy for a while. Hi Im a newby to SL> I have tons of questions. One thing is the language, there are lots of words that i dont know. Could you give me the definition of: Sandbox Rez prims It would help me so much thank you.Celest.

From: Celest Vantelli Hi Im a newby to SL> I have tons of questions. One thing is the language, there are lots of words that i dont know.

Sandbox Rez prims
It would help me so much thank you.Celest. A sandbox is a place you go where you are allowed to build and play with building, usually what you build there is wiped away after a period of hours (might be 3 hours, often lots more). Some sandboxes are afflicted with Greifers (people who do nasty things) so you need to pick your spot... to 'Rezz' comes from the film Tron, and it means to materialise, or appear... you would Rezz a cube or building block... (make one on the ground) or you might stand and wait for the buildings around you to Rezz, or you might be standing waiting for your clothing to rezz... that is, come into focus, or resolve. Prim is short for Primative... the primative shapes and blocks of which all items in SL are made except your avatar. if you want to see some prims, go to a sandbox and rezz some by clicking build at the bottom of your screen and then clicking on the ground. If you want to see how things are made here in SL, find any building or piece of furniture and right click on it and choose edit... then you can see the outlines of the prim shapes. Thers is a complete glossary somewhere on this forum.... not sure of where though... welcome to SL and good luck imogen

Yes, there is a place called the Changing Room, which I found. Now, it is only for female avatars. No men allowed. But Changing Room is a big store with a HUGE Freebie room full of stuff! There is also (surprise, surprise!) changing rooms in one big room (two levels of em!) in which you can open boxes and change privately. Look for an empty one! Don't go into one with someone in it. If you do, leave. Other people will do the same. There are a lot there. You will be able to find one... sooner or later.

From: Looli Vella As a newcomer to SL, I am wondering what long-time residents think should be the newbie Top 5. What is the one object every new resident should have? (Is it a brownish pink 14 inch prim penis?) The one gesture guaranteed to grease the wheels? (Is there a nose picking animation?) Or, what five rules of SL etiquette should every newbie know? What do you wish you had figured out sooner? procuro uma casa!!!!

You have to have a certain percentage of the sim sold before you are breaking even. 5) And so on... Well, I tried - if "loan1wolf" comes back he can grade my paper ;-D
