Are Camping Teleporters a new form of abuse?

I was offered a TP by someone I'd never heard of - no reason given -, but being a helpful & curious sort of person, I TP-ed there.
It turned out to be a camping phone, offering L$3 for each TP made, and it was occupied by someone who appeared to be TP-ing people randomly. (No, he was not in my friends list - perhaps he was going through a group membership list or something). There were a few other rather annoyed people standing there too.
As long as camping involves only the place & the people directly involved, then I have no objection to it. But dragging totally unrelated people into it, using others to earn a few Lindens like that, turns it into a form of interference in the S. lives of others - an abuse of the system perhaps?
Not sure how it could be restricted tho.

Well, you can restrict those that see you online (hence cannot teleport) by going to Edit -> Preferences...Communication tab and setting the Make My Online Status Visible Only To My Friends active.

I don't know if it's abuse.. but dang that sounds annoying!
Hmm.. I guess common sense would be to no longer accept TP's from anyone not your friend.

Actually, hiding online status won't prevent the knowledgeable from offering a tp anyway. There is a setting that gives you that button active even when it normally shouldn't be. Definitely just do not blindly teleport anywhere. Even *friends* mess up and send tps to the wrong person now and then so its best to know you're really meant to be going somewhere before you pop in Char

Why would you or anyone for that matter accept a tp from a total stranger that you didn't ask for? Curiosity? Ever heard the one involving curiosity and a cat?
Same thing with getting friendship invites from strangers and not only from them but most times they don't say a word to you, just the invitation.
I trust no one, no one.

Reading the thread title, I suddenly had the idea to tarn teleporters as camping chairs. As soon as the camper sit down, he's teleported elsewhere, perhaps into a nearby dumpster.

It would probably take a large number of people for them to care, and then it would only affect the person who actually offered the tp, and not the person encouraging that behaviour .

Sounds just like cold calling from marketeers. Do you hang up or buy?
And they probably alt cam an area or sim and drop these on lots of people. If I have not been IM'd before the offer it is always declined, because, you know, go back to my first line.

I just got teleported to one of these. I just ARed both the user and the booth owner.
Why am I not surprised this one happened to be located in 'Brasil Help Brasil'...?
But, I guess this is just the new 'Me am Brasil! Give me ROMS!'....
Are there ANY decent Brazilians that are on the 'net?

Are there ANY decent Brazilians that are on the 'net? Yes, this happened to me and a friend yesterday (I wasn't offered a teleport but I went along to orbit in case it was a malicious TP offer). Sure enough we ended up in Brasil Help Brasil. Personally I think it is abuse, we reported the creator of the object and the guy operating it. Actively soliciting people to annoy others for money is outrageous.

this is the future of sl. that guy was paid to help create a list of active users for some marketing/data mining outfit, tying it to your age-verified rl identity.

Couldn't the 'caller' have been using these very forums to find people who might have been online? Little green button on the bottom left shows people active on the board so it seems like an easy target to try and TP the same names in world.
Never accept TP's from strangers...

Never accept TP's from strangers... I am very rarely on both the forum and inside SL at the same time.

If I'm online here, it's usually because i'm at work and unable to play SL. I suspect it's the same for quite a few regulars. Besides, I thought my presence was invisible.

Welcome to my world. If you fancy getting lots of TPs, make yourself an alt called Aardvark and make friends

Ok, two things. 1. Never accept TPs from strangers...Didn't your parents teach you anything? 2. This sort of crap is another reason why SL performance is bad. What a waste of resources this scam is. Just think what the serveres are going through to send these people back and forth...and for what?, a lousy 3 lindens? The next time you have a failed teleport, remember who to blame. These things should be banned

And now I understand why I get random TP requests (glares furiously at my groups and blames those I joined for new clubs purely to keep someone or another happy).
PRUNING WILL HAPPEN TONIGHT!!!

PRUNING WILL HAPPEN TONIGHT!!! I have a bad habit of not wanting to be rude and joiin clubs when asked too. I've become better with friendship offers, using the Notecard strategy. I go through my groups periodically and delete those for places I don't go to or ones that are IM Spam generators.
