Dang; been away from SL for way too long! (school gets in the way!)

Aww, thanks guys for including mine amongst the other translators out there. :o It's great that SL is working to build-in translation features into the viewer itself. Would work to reduce the load of scripts, and improve translations for everyone with all the HTTP I/O being handled at the client-side.

I just updated mine to include more Google supported languages, 51 that they support at the current time. It was fun to design and work through all the technological and UI hurdles (believe me, it was a struggle to make things easy to use, try to keep people happy with "spam" complaints, ensure security and reliability, etc...but that's what's fun about programming and tinkering), but as things progress in the development of SL you have to move on sometimes. I hope that all of the translator programmers take their skills and works towards the next big thing!

P.S. I just put the Universal Translator on XStreetSL (dang, could never get used to that name) for L$500 for those that want to make a donation. The translator is FREE in-world...and every copy of the translator has the ability to give a FREE copy of itself to nearby avatars through the translator menu system. I guess I added the "donation" thing...well I wanted to make it FREE, and allow those that wanted to donate towards the work if they wanted to. Besides, Google doesn't allow the use of their translation service by pay-for-use or commercial systems...free systems only.

Note: in regards to privacy concerns, my translator (and I'm sure the others) de-identify any translations sent to our respective translation services. As far as Google knows, it's getting chat from whatever IP address is attached to the simulator you are on. It doesn't know the IP address of your client computer, and it doesn't know the name of the avatar doing the chatting. It just receives a string of text to translate from one language to the other. So in that case, the source of the chat is completely anonymous (unless Google and SL/LL compare notes). With the new client translation capability, this might not be the case depending on how SL/LL routes the translations.

Simbolic but I thought Ferd's was better. Too bad Ferd's is harder to find.

I used to used babbler and debabbler, but they seem to have disappeared from my inventory. Do they still exist?

Ferd's translators can be found at most NCI sites and also on the Help Islands. I haven't been to HIP lately, so, I don't know of his vendor is there. (^_^)

It's been my personal favorite simply because it IMs each person in their own language instead of spamming open chat in a fixed language. (^_^)

The implementation of the translator into Snowglobe came after Phil saw someone using Ferd's and he actually approached Ferd to do the job.... Which he turned down.... Which started that Jira. =^-^=

... I think Ferd wound up doing it anyway. (^_^)y

Yeah; that's one of the big problems with some of the translators out there. That is why I also only use IM in my translator implementation. Though some people still get upset when they receive IMs, thinking they are spammed out into public chat. I added an opt-out feature to stop receiving translations on a per-user-basis, but it's problematic at best since people are "trigger-happy" to pronounce things as spam.

Strange...Philip never noticed mine before? ;) Hehehe. I've been doing automatic, transparent, and dynamic translation via IM using the Google Translation service for well over a year now in SL. :p I remember using some of the initial translators out there, and thought things could be done more transparently.

Actually a very old version of my translator can be found outside the freebie store on some help islands. It's an older, non-working version that I think the Lindens used to help people who needed to automatically translate for those in need. I need to figure out how to get Governor Linden to upgrade to the latest version?

Having the translation in the client is a great idea, though...really for the best.

I just tried a Babbler 3.17. It said it was checking for an update but did not find one. It put a bunch of html code into the chat stream. I think it is broken.

The maxcase.info website says the account is suspended.

I hope Max Case is ok.

I believe he was just taking some time off or an extended leave. I haven't spoken to him in a long time.

What is Hank's called? Forgive the ignorance.

It's a pity Ferd's can only be found on help islands and such. I wish there were a parcel in world to bring newbies to, or to pick up a Ferd's translator for myself.

I've found Ferd's in several newbie places.

Mine was originally called just the "Universal Translator" but then others started using that name so I now call it the "HR Universal Translator" to be clear. Mine is free at my shop in Grignano, or if you are using one you can give a free copy to anyone in the immediate area, or anyone can request a free copy while using the translator option menu (just chat "translator" into public chat or "/777 translator" for some privacy, or just click the translator if it is not worn as a HUD and is sitting on the ground) and click the "FREE Copy" button. One will be sent to you within seconds.

Universal Translator updated with new languages, UI improvements designed for zero-configuration, complete transparency with translations with no user interaction other than to speak naturally in your own native language. Wear and chat. Simple.

The LSL source code to the core bits of the "HR Universal Translator" are now available in the LSL Wiki...

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Universal_Translator

Maybe we can collaborate to make a unified translation system that gets rid of the duplication, and helps to improve translation for everyone?

Added some requested features to the Universal Translator (Open Source Edition). Any scripters out there for a new challenge? :D
