It's always been clear to me that the whole attraction of Facebook is that it's a place where everyone is open about their real identities. I joined it on that basis. When I joined SL in 2006, the impression was that very few people revealed their real identities and those who did so didn't really 'get' SL. I think that's changed a bit now.
Both are equally valid concepts but they're different horses for different courses.

From: Twisted Pharaoh When internet started it was mostly only newsgroups and emails. Posters where known by their true identities : universities searchers, great firms developpers and the like. emails were like drsmith@ibm.com, or prwild@mit.tech.edu and so on... nobody was anonymous.
Unless they were rabbit!bimmler.

Facebook? I'd like to whack every user in the face with a book.
Heavy work, I know, but just think of the job satisfaction.

I'm on facebook. I use it in the way FB is intended to be used: to stay in touch with REAL LIFE friends&family that are too far away to conveniently get in touch otherwise (timezones), and to stay in touch about the unimportant stuff with my kiddo who lives with my ex (for the real stuff we have cellphones after all).
I, for one, would NOT want my niece's son to see any details about what I do in SL. Would YOU?

From: Osprey Therian ...What's the difference between this and an actor's stage name?... A very valid point. It's very common in the creative arts to have a stage name, nom-de-plume or whatever simply in order to maintain a separation between one's public and private lives. Is there a FaceBook page for Alice Cooper? Onoz...... call the identity nazis to shut it down and insist on Vincent Furnier *ONLY*. And what about people who have changed their real-world name by deed poll or are considering doing so and are test-driving a new name before comitting themselves? No doubt the snitches are having a self-righteous field day over at FB. I find the identity nazis to be objectionable in the extreme. If they don't walk the talk and wear their real-world identity information publicly for all to read then they haven't got a leg to stand on. Furthermore they should be regarded as little more than hyper-agressive identity thieves.
