The Facebook Terms have not changed when it comes to using fake names and there are a slew of profiles that are people making their avatar names from Second Life on Facebook. They don’t want to use their real names for these accounts maybe they don’t want anyone to know who they really are. Maybe some of them are the same person and just want people to think they are someone else and use Facebook to help fool people.

They even have groups in Facebook to petition to let them keep their fake profiles. Facebook is not Second Life and this needs to stop. Do we want our family members friended by these people who are hiding behind fake names? You have no idea what their intentions are and if harm is done it will make it even harder for authorities to identify who they are.

L...O....L.

I heard that someone was reporting SLU posters who have FB accounts to get them deleted.

I wish they'd hurry and report me, dammit. They're really slacking.

Is this the other side of the coin? I mean we all sit here and are horrorfied that anyone would devulge real life information to the users of any platform or game..........and they are just as horrofied that someone would not devulge such information. :)

You got to love diversity. LOL

Yea, the righteous are horrified at the desire for privacy of others.

I think it says much more about those who want to strip it away from everyone than those who wish to keep their privacy and affect nobody else's choices by doing so.

Not really. That individual seems like a bit of a nut. Okay, maybe more than a bit. Either way, s/h/it is def a slacker for not reporting my acct yet. It's already been over a day fcs. lol

Seriously, though, this sudden rush to RLID? That has more to do with marketing than any sort of philosophical thing. Or otherwise put, companies can't make a whole lot of money selling avie info. And this, imo, is what this current lab conflab is really about: the lab trying to figure out a way to "commodotize" us.

It's a difference in demographics. We are in an imaginary world, they are in a real world. Different strokes for different folks. The groups don't really mesh well........it's not about which is good or which is bad. It's about different ideas of social networking.

It's also why I'm not worried about Facebookers coming to SL. They won't find much they like here........like most SL'ers who have Facebook accounts find FB rather boring and uninteresting (aside from the RL family interaction possible in FB that is not as easily attainable in SL). Facebook is no threat to SL and SL is no threat to FB.

Um.......funny....one of the very first people (a RL married couple actually) I became 'friends' with via SL.....migrated to FB and told me about it. Neither of them is in SL any longer....they simply moved on from it, no big deal....but they remain dear friends to me....seriously cool folks that I'm glad I met.

I use FB for an entirely different reason than SL......and I don't think people can be categorized as one or the other in 'type'. For me...FB is a convenient way to keep in touch with a lot of the people I care about.....who are spread all over the map. I don't get to see my brother and nephew out west....but FB makes them very present in my life on a day to day basis. Same for many other friends and fam on there.

SL.....different animal. It's not a social platform for me (I know, the horror, right lol) It's more about the creative freedom.....I happen to find the virtual world venue absolutely delightful and mesmerizing.....and I love discovering new areas and seeing what others imaginations have come up with. To me, it's wonderland and I'm Alice....except I sort of tuned out the cheshire cat and the mad hatter. :p Whatever dudes...just let me grow smaller and taller.....I'll make my way just fine, thank you.

I can see why FB wouldn't necessarily want people to use it like a 3rd party identity....it was designed with a certain purpose in mind.....a social web connection....a way to find and stay in touch with loved ones.....long lost friends....and so on. And it works quite well as that. I've actually been found by tons of people from my past....my childhood.....it's amazing and pretty dam cool to be able to say hi to the kid I played with when I was 7yo and haven't seen since! On the other hand....my niece up north, who is this totally quirky adorable kid.....likes to change her name on FB to funky variations of her real name. She's just being goofy.....I hope she doesn't get booted for it tho!

Anyway.....long winded....sorry.....I'm neutral....FB has it's venue.....SL has it's venue....both have their legitimate reasons for wanting to protect those venues. I value my privacy as much as anyone....but then again....I knew what FB was when I signed on, and I wanted to use it as it was intended.....if I didn't .....then I simply wouldn't have joined FB.

Yes, because a real imagination is the bane of data miners, marketers, and police states.
Reminds me of Half-Life 2.

Well, Facebook is for real people to post real information about themselves... if an SL'er doesn't want to post personal information, then wtf are they on Facebook for in the first place?

It's just another episod of the great tragedy of Internet. Let me tell you a story...

When internet started it was mostly only newsgroups and emails. Posters where known by their true identities : universities searchers, great firms developpers and the like. emails were like drsmith@ibm.com, or prwild@mit.tech.edu and so on... nobody was anonymous.

Then the WWW came up : The World Wide Web and with it came the first free email services, such as yahoo.

And with yahoo you could take a pseudo and hide your identity, and people started posting crap because their name was hidden.

Then after came the virtual worlds, and people started thinking they could be different from what they were in real life, just like actors in a play. That is what Second Life is all about.

And then after came Facebook and the need to take back your identity. People want to know who is positng and so on.

In resume, we have one philosophy which says that nobody should be anonymous, and the other saying that online, we can be someone else than we use to be in real life.

That's why Facebook and Second Life cannot work together, because they represent two different philosophies of the Internet. Historically Facebook wins, but imho the popularity of Internet came from the second vision.

Just because we signed up on Facebook doesn't mean we really care about it. It was like Mount Everest - it was just there. No boo-hoos from most people, either way.

I'm linked on FB to rl people. They know me in real life. What's the difference between this and an actor's stage name? I'm not attempting to defraud anyone.
