Laws may be different in the US but in Canada you can buy a pre-paid credit card. It works identical to a regular credit card and is basically for electronic purchases. The card only has whatever you loaded onto it for a limit. You may also use it to verify your paypal account and avoid giving LL or anybody else your cc info period. The card must be in your name, and the usual address verifications are done (CSc or security code)

This appears to be the safest route. I agree you can't be too careful online.

Thats is scary since you can use them to verity Paypal..nowonder there are so many tree farmers thee days! And people wonder why we have problems with accounts abusing the game. Both in mony tree abuse money tress farmers and bombers and other kinds of hate attacks. Everything is covered. There is no prove at all really these days. But nothing stops kids for getting them using their parents name etc.

Buy a throwaway gift card, like Vanilla Visa or similar. They range from $25 to over $100, and when they are maxed the card is no longer valid but the credit card info remains on file at LL harming no one.

Yes. You can walk into a bank, a check cashing place, just about anywhere in the US and pick one up cheap and quick and just keep it on hand. You can buy a card once and each time you need more money on it, you just swing by the bank on your way home and add to it. Do it once a month and you can use the card to pay your tier.

It's the smartest way to do anything online if you're not absolutely comfortable that your info will be safe. The sad thing is, LL is certainly not the only company I give my info to, its just the only company I don't give my REAL info to, not since the last time they left the barn door open.

Presumably they have added security / fixed holes in their system.

And yet six months later they're sending out (what was it, 1500?) emails to people telling them that it might be a good idea now to cancel their credit cards.

Concerns over the security of you payment details is understandable.

Ah well, the are not alone there and other are have done a lot worse... Just yesterday I read the story about a discount retailer who had their systems open for 18 months and had the information stolen of 46 million credit cards... now that is a company I wouldn't like to do business with...

Not to the speak about politicians, government people, military people (and so and so) how seemed to have made a game from it to loose lap taps and USD sticks with confidential information!

Edit: BTW my credit card is 100% insured against miss use.

Ive just heard about TK Max glad i dont shop there tho i know several who do. My main gripe is that the storage of personal data in the US is not like Europe where we have strict rules governing personal data, the US is very lax in its data protection imho.

Since the September database hacking episode i now use a pre-paid Mastercard for LL's as it will only be used for here and i just top it up thro the month as i need to spend RL cash in game i would rather be safe than sorry :)

You require proper identification to purchase prepaid cc's. If your name and address do not match your account details, I don't think you will be able to use it. The security code (usually 3-4 numbers on the back of the card) holds this info and is used by merchants for verifcation. Paypal would not verify your account if the info on your cc (prepaid or conventional) did not match your address and name on your account.

Fraud runs rampant in all forms of payment and it would be unfair to blame the presence of griefers in SL on prepaid cc's.
